Best of both worlds is to come.....
What a great two parter. It's like the quality of the show rose with those episodes.

About to be on the 5th season.

Data is still the best. Riker and Worf are badasses. Troi is the worst actor by far, and she's sorta useless. Whenever they ask her something, she goes "I feel something, but not sure what." Way to go Deanna!

I actually liked Wesley Crusher. Apparently everyone hated him, but I felt he didn't get the props he deserved, deus ex machinas aside.

There's so much ass, titties and cameltoe in this show lol. And it's supposed to above all that. But I guess in the late 80s/early 90s, nobody wore underwear in the future.

Well tbf, I assume you are watching the Remastered version in HD? I guess nobody thought these details would ever be seen back then.

Liked the last episode.

Tilly is wearing a little thin for me though.

I'm watching it on Netflix. It's in 4:3 ratio.

It's mostly the stuff they wear. But tv was different in the 80s and 90s. The stuff they wore on threes company and Married with children probably wouldn't fly in today's "progressive" climate.

Yeah these are the new HD remasters. Look decent on Netflix, but even better if you get the blu rays. The HD is so clear you can see alot of new things. I have seen gaffers tape on a few things, and a bunch of make up errors. And nipples lots of space nipples.

Here's a comparison shot of how the show aired, compared to the new HD restoration

next-gen-remastered.jpg

Speaking of HD vs SD, this guy has used an AI, to automatically render DS9 in HD. Its not perfect, but pretty impressive. This will allow them to remaster many things in the coming years, with out the expensive scene by scene restoration they are currently having to do.

Unfortunately, you're highly unlikely to see an official remaster of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Its special effects were shot on video rather than added to film, making an already daunting remastering process that much more difficult -- and since it's not a tentpole show like The Next Generation, CBS might not consider it worth the effort. Machine learning might make it easier for fans to fill the gap, however. CaptRobau has experimented with using AI Gigapixel's neural networks to upscale Deep Space Nine to 1080p. The technology is optimized for (and trained on) photos, but apparently works a treat for video. While you wouldn't mistake it for an official remaster, it provides a considerably cleaner, sharper look than the 480p original without introducing visual artifacts.

More details are coming in the future, CaptRobau said.

Don't expect to see a fully upgraded DS9 hit the web in the near future. Legal issues notwithstanding (CBS is already antsy about unofficial Star Trek material), it's still a technical challenge. It took CaptRobau two days to process five minutes of footage on his PC, and there are 176 episodes of the sci-fi classic. It'd take enthusiasts a long time to remaster everything. And you can likely forget about a fan-made 4K update. While AI Gigapixel does work, it's both more intensive and has the unusual effect of creating very sharp edges while doing relatively little to sharpen everything else.

Not that the enthusiast is necessarily worried. He sees this as a way to goad CBS into producing its own AI-powered remaster, hopefully using customized algorithms and raw material that improve the quality beyond what you see here. This could theoretically give networks a way to improve the quality of many older TV shows without having to spend months or years manually cleaning up every frame.

cannot watch right now, but that sounds fantastic

That Yoager episode where that Videan put a dead crew member face on his head was
pretty sick. They also splices B'lana's Klingon and huma side. On of my fav.

20 years? What a low bar. This show is dog vomit, and a disgrace to Star Trek. Your blind affection for it reminds me of Petey's for True Blood s2, or those who couldn't accept what happened to Dexter and The Walking Dead before it became impossible to overlook. On the last page you hounded @fonzob1 by challenging him, "Have you even watched the show yet?"

People watching the show don't think highly of it, including the most hardcore Trekkies, like unattached creatives who have written Trek episodes in the past, and there is a undeniable downward trajectory of esteem among viewers this season.

Anson Mount as Captain Pike is the show's redeeming grace. Spectacular actor. He is the show's voice and moral center. They should accept he is the show's central character, but they are clinging to the errant idea from their outset of a first officer as the main protagonist. Burnham, Ash, and Georgiou are anchors dragging everything down: actors and characters alike. The show will never be good with them in it, but they won't let go of their mistakes. That's why there is no digging themselves out.

Saru was more interesting before they tried turning him into Nat Turner. That subplot had so much freaking potential, but they blatantly demonized the species who should have been the object of our sympathies.

The showrunners realized killing Culber was so dumb they cooked up a ridiculous subplot just to bring him back. Uggh. The actors are crushing it trying to carry that dropped ball, but it's too late. It's like a comic book with the inability to commit to a decision-- even a bad one. Incoming...retcon!! What? We've done it before! Remember Wrath of Khan?!! See?! Justified! Justified!

The show could earn some cred if it had the spine to just be honest, instead of a feel-good fantasy, in how it treats its characters. Someone like Tilly has no place in leadership, and would never ascend to a place of leadership in the real world, or have her misguided delusions about that entertained by no-nonsense military colleagues who would instead do the right thing, the hard thing, and let her know she would better invest her energies and dreams in a different destiny. Curveball of life. Show doesn't have the courage to confront it. It would rather tell fairy tales to weak, insecure girls.

Section 31 is boring, dumb, hackneyed Hollywood treatment of black ops and military intelligence. It's nonsense.

There's more insubordination than in a Harry Potter movie, there's more infighting than on Game of Thrones, and there's more Kung Fu than on Xena: Warrior Princess. Seriously, wtf is the deal with all the kung fu. Pulp television. Belongs on the CW.

Star Trek: Enterprise has a higher IMDb rating, and that isn't a mistake. One strong (not great) episode won't change that. This is unremarkable, glossy, forgettable television.
I agree STD is terrible.

They were a really cool foe. Doing horrible things to others, but it was the only way they could survive

Tonight's episode is directed by good old Two takes Frakes
I wish he could direct every episode. It's clear the old school understand what Star Trek is supposed to be infinitely better than the kids.

#1, #3, and #5 highest rated episodes on IMDb are by Frakes (with 24 episodes so far). These are the only three he has directed.

Last night's episode was the best of the series. The only thing I didn't like about it was when it tried to make the emotional, culminating final scene about Burnham (and Tilly). It's literally arithmetic. The further the show distances itself from Burnham as its center the better the show is. Less Burnham, less Tilly, less Ash, less fem dominatrix Georgiou...let's get back to decent people struggling against seemingly insurmountable odds. More Pike. More Spock. Admiral Cornwell represents the face of female leadership & strength this show should be pushing. That's what made this episode so great. I loved the touch he added where he showed that the security chief was no fool. Her instincts were already pointing in the right direction contrary to all the evidence indicating Ash that everyone accepted at face value.

Seriously, at some point, if Burnham doesn't follow an order, someone needs to throw her out an airlock. This is a military organization even if this specific ship is focused on exploration and scientific discovery.

But, again, kudos to Seth for being one step ahead of Star Trek. It's obvious that the Kaylon narrative was intentional from day one. Here we are, and the crew is already in a fight with a runaway A.I. that appears to be attempting to effect its desire to eradicate sentient organic life from the universe by playing unfairly with trips back from the future. All hail...

Frakes did a podcast recently, you might enjoy. Its mostly about his directing career, and how he approaches it.

Wow they took a total underutilized character, that I could care less about, and made me feel bad for her. That was a gorgeous episode. The opening shot of the Discovery was fantastic, and something that has been missing, the beauty shots of the ships.

This episode was written by new co-showrunner Michelle Paradise, and directed by Jonathan Frakes. Hopefully they will work on many more episodes together.

I really enjoyed the last episode, as well..maybe my favorite one so far.
I like that this show isn't afraid to kill people.
There were a lot of neat little touches throughout--I especially liked what they did with the chief of security. She wasn't a fool.
I'm not a big fan of Burnham, but I did like the interactions between her and Spock.
Tilly can go kick rocks though--I can't stand her still.

A lot of people have the theory that red angel is Michael Burnham, and that she is coming back in time to fix the time line. She wasn't suppose to survive the attack that killed her parents, and has shifted the time line since.

I'm not so sure but it would be pretty ballsy to kill off your main character

That actually makes perfect sense.
It would explain why the angel specifically went for Spock.

I think tonights episode was the weakest of the season, after the 2 great episodes from the past weeks. Interesting ending

I'm curious how Burnhams mother will react with, Phillipa now she she is taking a more active role in her life.

Could it be because they focused on Michael again? FFS, I was hoping the Red Angel wouldn't be her. The last few episodes gave me hope they wouldn't do that, but I should have known better.

Is anyone else annoyed as hell that casual wear fashion apparently hasn't changed an iota in 136 years?

Fack, this is so lazy. Yet they wonder why Trekkies now consider The Orville the true Trek.

I really think they might kill off Burnham. Its either she dies, to correct mistakes in timeline, or she will fix the timeline some how.
