The Star Trek Thread, V5.0

I hated it at the time for reasons I can't recall.
T'Pol is an interesting Vulcan struggling with emotion.
Archer is a strong Cap.
Phlox is maybe the most intriguing and least explored character.
Same, I stopped watching during the first season. It started off way too slow, and the time it aired would vary and this was still in the mostly VHS recording days. I was also 17, and more concerned about graduating high school, chasing girls, playing football, trying to convince older siblings and friends to buy me beer, and not mention it happened right as 9/11 happened.

But thankfully I was an early adopter of Netflix and soon forced myself to re-watch it, just to say I have seen every trek episode, and now it's one of my favorite series

Pretty much consensus today. But then, almost nobody saw it that way.
I would Love for all access to make one of there new mini series there talking about, following the NX 01 crew through what would've been season 5, the Earth-Romulan war and the rise and creation of the federation.

To me it sounds like these are all just DSC sideshows. Any additional project (Picard? Khan? Animated? Academy?) would be separate.

Hopefully I am wrong and they use those to test audience reaction.

These sideshows things are just to add some content, to try and get another month from the Discovery subscriber.

I have read and listened to quite a few treksperts and Hollywood people, and they have all said, the discovery subscription number, and the international netflix deal, brought in way more subscribers than they anticipated, but they also quickly dropped off when season 1 ended. They know Trek is there most valuable TV property, and are also seeing what Disney is doing with Star wars, with there streaming service, and its multiple Star wars shows. The deal with Kurtzman, shows they want him to oversee Trek in a big way, and want him to start cranking out content. This also has to do, with the so far failed merger with CBS and Paramount from the Redstone family. They want to expand trek, and thought they were going to be able to have the films back under one brand, but now know they need to focus on TV, where Trek is best.

I want to once again, recommend a great book to everyone.

The Fifty-Year Mission: The Complete, Uncensored, Unauthorized Oral History of Star Trek

This is the ultimate history of Star Trek. It gives the complete story of Star Trek, from almost every point of view involved in making the series. Writers, producers, actors, behind the scenes, fan, critics, everyone helps tell the tale. I really recommend the Audio book version, since this is a extremely long book. Part 1&2 are over 50 hours long, and is really a great value for the money. I have listened to it several time while working, and am currently almost finished with book 2 for the 4th time. Trek has been quite the drama both on and off screen, and it is all captured, the good, the bad, and the ugly. I can't recommend enough.

These shorts will start airing in December, one per week, until Discovery returns in January. Most new shows premiere the second or third week in Jan, after the holidays are finished. I'm looking forward to the one on Saru. Apparently this season, we will also go to his home planet, where his species, are the prey species to the dominate life form on the planet.

Anson Mount reveled in a interview, that he will be in command of the Discovery for all of Season 2. Wonder if they will keep bouncing around, who will be in command. Producers were also asked if Lorca will come back this season, and he said "Maybe". Word is Jason Issacs didn't want to commit to a long contract, when first approached, so signed up for his season arc. He apparently really loved working with the cast, and has kinda become ingrained in the trek culture by doing cons, and the trek cruises. It wouldn't shock me if he came back, as Prime Lorca, and rejoined the cast season 3.

If true, I may have to cave and get CBS All Access. I will wait until I see a trailer before I make that decision. This show will deserve its own thread.

This is the Star Trek thread. Name of it changes when new stuff happens.

Series will be set 20 years after nemesis

Picaed may or may not be captain of the Enterprise

Will deal with how people can change over a lifetime, and how to overcome and adapt to new challenges

No scripts have been written yet, but the deal is done, and they are currently story boarding the first season.

Not confirmed yet, but I know from various sources that they have been working on this deal for months, and they negotiations had stalled because Stewart was demanding a salary or 1 million dollars per episode. He must have gotten close to that number or some serious back end money, but good for him.

PATRICK STEWART:

“I will always be very proud to have been a part of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course,” Stewart said. “It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life for him, when I thought that life was over.”

Stewart added that now, in particular, seems like a good time to bring back the character, who exemplified calm, moral, reasoned leadership. “During these past years, it has been humbling to hear many stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership,” he said. “I feel I’m ready to return to him for the same reason – to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times. I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavor to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more.

ALEX KURTZMAN:

“With overwhelming joy, it’s a privilege to welcome Sir Patrick Stewart back to the Star Trek fold. For over 20 years, fans have hoped for the return of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and that day is finally here. We can’t wait to forge new ground, surprise people, and honor generations both new and old.”

Star Trek: Discovery writer and producer Ted Sullivan also shared on Twitter that the series launched from the mind of series writer and Trek novelist Kirsten Beyer:

It’s official — Patrick Stewart is returning to the Star Trek franchise. The acclaimed Shakespearean actor is set to headline a new Star Trek series for CBS All Access, reprising his iconic Next Generation character, Captain Jean-Luc Picard. The project, which has been rumored since the June announcement of a Star Trek universe expansion with new series, was just unveiled by Stewart himself in a surprise appearance at the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention.
The new series, which is not a Star Trek: Next Generation reboot, will tell the story of the next chapter of Picard’s life. It will be shepherded by Star Trek: Discovery co-creator/executive producer Alex Kurtzman who was tapped to oversee development of new Star Trek content under a big new overall deal with CBS TV Studios.

“With overwhelming joy, it’s a privilege to welcome Sir Patrick Stewart back to the Star Trek fold,” Kurtzman said. “For over 20 years, fans have hoped for the return of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and that day is finally here. We can’t wait to forge new ground, surprise people, and honor generations both new and old.”

On the creative team for the new series starring Stewart, Kurtzman will be joined by James Duff, who recently joined Star Trek: Discovery as executive producer and signed a CBS Studios overall deal, former Discovery exec producer Akiva Goldsman, Michael Chabon, and Discovery writer Kirsten Beyer.

Stewart, Chabon and Goldsman executive produce with Discovery executive producers Duff, Kurtzman and Heather Kadin of Secret Hideout as well as Roddenberry Entertainment President Eugene “Rod” Roddenberry, son of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, and Roddenberry Entertainment COO Trevor Roth.

It's good by virtue of Stewart.

But ST always depends on strong writing about human morality. It needs good stories or it's gonna suck.
