I'm having problems getting into DS9. I personally hate the ferengi. If I could genocide that race, I would. Fuck em. That said, I'm having problems accepting that they're not on a star ship or does that all change?

I had the same problems. I could never fully accept them being stuck on a station. It wasn't even remotely as cool as being on a starship. Even the Defiant was meh. (Probably because it was so small)

As for the Ferengi, they are a nasty race that should be eradicated (whoops, racism) but I'm not sure, I think I may hate the Cardassians most of all. I just cringe every time they pop up. Just something about them and their race that makes me instantly hate them.

Cardassians get a pass from me since they look like Tagoro from YuYu Hakusho.

DS9 gets better and better starting with the third or forth season. The main story arc in the final seasons is the best Trek ever put on television. It's fantastic.

People forget, Ferengi were modeled after 90's humans in terms of ethics and morals.
Which is extrade emphisized by how the Trek humans behave.
The Ferengi are such a simple cool race.
The episode where they form a tactical unit to free Moogie was so funny.
With a remote controlled Vorta

That episode was painful to watch.

Season 3-7 is the best trek out there. One of the first great serialized sci fi series. The Dominion war take Trek to a place it had never gone before.

The Ferengi are an expression of humanity. They go from unmoral thieves in season 1, to very in depth characters full of emotion. They gain there humanity, throughout the series.

Excellent episode, featuring Iggy Pop in a cameo role

Yeah, I remember reading somewhere that each race in the ST universe represents a different aspect of humanity. Ferengi = Greed.

They're just such ugly creatures though. I think at one point they implied a human female had sex with a Ferengi and it was a seriously disgusting thought. But again, I'm not sure.... the Cardassians to me are nearly just as repulsive. Maybe not quite, but close.

I did quite enjoy seeing the war storyline, and all the enemies and uneasy alliances coming together as one to battle a much bigger threat.

I just wish the series finale would have packed more of a punch. The closest thing I think I can equate it to (and I'm sorry for this) is the last Twilight movie. They were hyping up this humongous final battle, that literally turned out to be nothing more than "Oh, we're sorry. Misunderstanding. Nevermind." and then it just ended without a punch ever being thrown. What a massive letdown. Now, DS9 wasn't that bad in that regard, because we got tons of battling throughout the series. I just would have preferred for there to have been an epic final battle the likes of which made everything prior seem paltry by comparison. But it ending with Ado talking the one founder into a surrender was just meh as all hell IMO.

Perhaps someday they'll bring back the Dominion.

@sverre054

Btw, what is your official opinion on a Dominion vs Borg war. How do you think that would play out from beginning to end?

Im not sure. Thing you have to remember, the Dominion has been around for thousand years. They occupy a huge territory. Think think what they were able to accomplish, by just sending limited amount of resources through the wormhole. And they were also cut off, for large periods of time from reinforcements. Same with the Borg. There real stronghold is in the Delta quadrant, a long ways from Alpha and Beta quadrant. I think both could've destroyed the Federation if they wanted all out war. Both the Borg and Dominion are conquerors. They are trying to take over and for the Dominion, have you become there subjects, or the Borg to assimilate and enhance there own collective. In the end, it was a losing battle for them to try and take on the Federation and it allies. The investment for each of them would be too high, and there wouldn't be much left over to rule.

Whats crazy is, the Ferengi were suppose to become the new Klingons for the TNG era. These scary little, viscous demon, who were ruthless and only driven by greed. But, they were written to be far weaker comedic then Roddenberry originally intended.

Check out this pretty impressive fan made opening sequence, in the more tradional trek style

First view of a new discovery crew member. He is a Saurian, a long time federation member species, that were only onscreen in TMP and the animated series. It's cool that they are actually introducing these species that they never had the skills to make a realistic character. Maybe next will be the Catians.

Saurian brandy for all!

There is a list out in the web of episodes that focus on the dominion war so you can avoid all the filler crap.

And here's how they look in Star Trek Online

They are a reptilian and mainly nocturnal species, which is why they have developed such large eyes. They are sensitive to light though. There Planets atmosphere is considered toxic to most species, so they have a natural resistance to many chemicals, and some radiation.

The first season of DS9 isn't very good. The Ferengi are portrayed terribly/one dimensionally too, but a couple of them become stellar characters (Quark namely) Things pick up in season 2 and really get going in season 3. The vast amount of characters really get fleshed out, including the enemies. Dukat is one of the great villains of all time.

There's a big war brewing and it gets fucking epic. As others have mentioned, there are some bad filler episodes throughout, but everything is worth watching , as it's rare there isn't something that's built upon later.

I started watching DS9 a while back and I'm halfway through season four. I hadn't seen it since it originally aired, and I'm really enjoying it. I really liked Odo, and Heart of Stone is one of my favorite episodes.

Too much filler, though.

Forgot just how much I loved the relationship between Odo and Quark.

I can't get with Discovery. It's just not my ST.
It's supposed to be stories centered mostly on human morality in alien cultures, where people are all about exploration and self improvement.

It can be argued there's some of that here but not enough for me

Also, a brief word about human cultures on ST shows generally.

ST writers love stereotypes. Sulu had to be superJapanese. Picard was superFrench. Chakotay was super Hispanic guy cast as super Native American complete with all the hibbity jibbity.

It's alright when subtle, but often becomes ham fisted characterization.
