Even though I would have hated them bringing back geriatric Kirk instead of a new captain, the thought of Picard coming back in his 80s has me more excited than anything I saw on the screen from Discovery.

Gotta agree that the Starfleet Academy show is a good idea whose time has probably passed, though.

Speaking of Khan, I would love for him to return in the JJ films (played by Cumberbatch). I actually loved Into Darkness. Perhaps that's because I hadn't seen Wrath of Khan prior to seeing it, so it felt fresh. It was action packed all to hell and I loved nearly every single minute of it. Overall, the first two JJ Treks were good to me, as their own thing. But I definitely wouldn't consider them canon or in line with TOS or TNG, regardless of what the producers intended. (Beyond was shit)

Hey, so what's going on with the Tarantino Trek? Any word on that?

@sverre054

As for DS9.... if every ship in the Federation had ablative hull armor during the Dominion War, how do you think that would have affected things? And Transphasic Torpedoes?

Btw, what do you think would have happened if the Federation Alliance had been successful in destroying the Founder's Homeworld (Such as when the Romulans attempted it)? Do you think that would have ended the war right then and there, or would that have caused the Dominion to double their efforts? Hypothetically speaking, we'll say it happens within the first year of the war.

#1 would have greatly appealed to me in the 90s or early 2000s. But not anymore. Not with the way Hollywood is now, to the degree that it is.

As for Picard coming back, I think I wouldn't mind them following the books and him being married and having a son. That would certainly make up for his loss in Generations. But if the E returns to the small screen, that would be amazing. I hope they'll update it to include slipstream drive in addition with its warp drive, as well as transphasic torpedoes and ablative hull armor.

Then every time they go to red alert, we can see the gloriousness of:

There have been probably a dozens attempts to make a Star Fleet Academy type show, since the late 70s. It would be aimed towards a younger demographic, and more towards women. It would always be a much cheaper show to produce, due to being based on earth, and wouldn't require all the ship sets.

In the books, the Federation is is starting to equip its newest ships with a early Slip Stream. It requires a rare element, they don't have ready access to, and ship size and aerodynamics play a big role. The big E was experimented with the drive, but its a little too big for the tech right now. The voyager series books are now really focused on slip streams. Voyager has been fitted with it, and currently is leading a scout fleet expedition(like 10 ships) back to the Delta quadrant to search for that element. Slip Stream has a large cool down time(5-10 days), so using the drives require a lot of planning, and due to the limited supply of the element, can only be used sparingly.

The USS Aventine, is a brand new test ship, built for Slip Stream, and to be a fast response vessel. It has been featured in the epic Destiny trilogy(Seriously if your a trek fan, READ THIS BOOK!) It features Captain Ezri Dax, and a pretty interesting crew. I would love a series based on that, but it will never happen

The Script is currently being written by the writer of The Revenant, Mark L. Smith. Tarantino is planning on directing it after he finishes his next film, which just started filming. So your looking probably 2-3 years out.

As for the hull armor, sure it would help. It was being tested on the defiant, which was a small ship, so I would guess armoring the large ships, with neucells and saucers would be tough.

That's a sexy looking ship. Is it more of a warship, or more of an all-arounder, or more of a science vessel? I assume "Multi-Mission Explorer" is just PR term Starfleet uses. They don't seem like the type to just come out with "Type: War Ship," at least officially to the public.

Was this in novels that it started testing the armor? I don't remember it in the series, unless I totally missed it. But I definitely don't remember seeing the Defiant do that awesome transformation that Voyager did.

Its been in novels and other non canon sources.

Nothing in star fleet is a "war ship", but Aventine was made for long science research. But its a fast attack ship. It has the fastest warp engines, and was the first ship built for slip stream. It also has all the latest weapons. It is not a big capital ship like The Enterprise or even Titan, that built to for long term missions and heavily armed and defended,

I think it's funny that people who said a woman can't be captain because women aren't physically strong enough have no problems at all with an eighty year old Picard coming back in that role.

For myself, I just want a good show. I don't need old characters coming back. I don't need the Enterprise. I just want a good show.

My only request would be no Frakes. Hate that guy. Always did. Every time they gave him the Enterprise, it was captured or blown up. Once, by Ferengi. Seriously. Asshat lost The entire Enterprise to Ferengi.

Seriously, all of this is good news. Seems like despite of DSC's shortcomings, the fanbase is big enough to make a series like Discovery successful.

The fact that we are even discussing a whole portfolio of possible series ist a great sign.

If Picard comes back I'm just hoping he's in command of a ship and it's just like the good old days. I don't want to see Picard teaching at Starfleet Academy or being part of an animated show, or doing anything else other than being in command of the Enterprise, live action. I don't care if he's 90. Picard is awesome!

I agree. In the books hes in his mid 80s, still captain, Banging Beverly, and has a young son these days. As captain of the fleet Flagship, he has ultimate command of the fleet, when a admiral isn't in the sector, that's why in First contact he had to assume command. He's basically a Commodore, these days. If they do make him an admiral, just make sure hes on a ship. Ship can have another captain, maybe Worf at this point, but it would be at the beck and call of Picard.

He will be directing Episode 2 and 10 in Discovery's second season. Hell Jason Issacs is now attending the Star Trek cruises and conventions, because he had so much fun being directed by and hanging out with him.

Speaking of why he took command of the fleet, I think I figured out the by-the-book reason why he was able to and why the other Captains listened to him without question..... In Voyager Episode Equinox, Janeway quotes Starfleet regulation saying something to the effect of "When there are two or more Captains in a battle situation, the Captain with the most formidable/advanced ship assumes authority." So therefore with the E being the boss ship, everyone else was obligated to listen to Picard.

Conversely, Picard was made Captain of the Enterprises because he was the best man for the job.
