Conversely, Picard was made Captain of the Enterprises because he was the best man for the job.
In the recent book, the autobiography of Jean-Luc Picard(great read by the way) after the Stargazer was lost, Picard was purposely held back by Admiral Hansen and made his assistant, and in charge of fleet development. He wanted a new ship right away, but was held back for nearly a decade. Picard thought it was because they would soon insist he take a earth based Admiral role. Hansen had been holding him back, because he knew that they were developing a new class of star ship that would require the most experienced captains. Picard was shocked after helping complete testing and assembly of the new Galaxy class ships, Hansen told him it was now time for him to return to ship command, and will therefore be named captain of the newest flagship, The Enterprise 1701-D. As flagship captain, he would have Supreme command of the fleet, when a Admiral isn't in command.

Kurtzman continues to consolidate his power and has inserted James Duff to help run the writers room. He is also a experienced showrunner, so it wouldn't surprise me to see him take over the running duties in season 3. He just have Trek cred, being a writer for Enterprise back in the early 2000s

He just wrote one episode in the first season, but it was a good one IMO.

I feel there may be room for diversity in the Trekverse. Have a series like Discovery, have maybe a Starfleet Academy appealing to a slightly different set of 'casuals', and also have a ''true" Trek series.

So then it sounds like Picard is indeed the GOAT Captain. Something I've felt for a long time, though OG Kirk is awesome.

If any of you existed in the Star Trek universe, could pick which race or faction you belonged to, but it couldn't be the Federation, which group would you join?

Tough one. There have been many species with godlike powers (e.g. the Q), so I am gonna exclude those.

I would probably be content to be one of the independent species/colonial people in Federation space.

Founders, Dominion.

So, my first thought was one of the natives on Risa, but I am pretty sure that is a Federation planet. My second thought is one of the augments (e.g., Khan) because they technically are not part of the Federation and they can anyone's ass.

I actually noticed him from the Spock documentary. He has been a showrunner for the past decade, and seems like a trek fan. His Enterprise episode was great. Learning about the Space boomers and introducing the Nausicans.

Obviously a Deltan, where there oath of celibacy isn't in effect. They ooze sexuality and cause you to be immune to pain!

What we left behind, the new DS9 documentary, is just about complete. They are just finishing up the music, and restoring DS9 footage in full HD. It will be out this fall, during the DS9 25th anniversary celebration.

Yo did I just read that Picard is coming back!?!?!

My body is ready.

I just started watching star trek. I binged next generation and just finished Voyager. SEVEN OF NINE HNNNNNNNGGG

I actually really enjoyed Voyager, for the most part. My main issue with it was the unlikeable and weak pussy ass characters. Paris, Kim, Neelix, Kes, and Torres were intolerable to the point that I wanted to choke them out nearly every time they were on screen. They were just such limp wristed bitches. And I hated how they basically turned the Borg, who were scary as shit in TNG, into full fledged jobbers and stripped away their mystique almost entirely. Unreal.

Janeway, Chakotay, Seven, the Doctor, and Tuvoc were ok. Overall the show was vastly inferior to TNG, but I still enjoyed the premise quite a lot. And the finale was actually really enjoyable. And the ship itself was pretty cool. But yeah, overall I'd say I was pretty into it.

Enterprise was boring as all hell. And Discovery is practically unwatchable. It's trash.

Ideally, I want a series that's exactly like TNG/DS9/VOY in look and feel (as those were all identical in that regard) but set maybe 20-30 years after Nemesis.
I rank Voyager far below TNG and DS9, but far ahead of Enterprise and STD. I loved the intro to Voyager. It was one of the first things I heard/saw in surround sound back in the day. I remember being pissed if I missed the intro when watching. I agree with you as well, I disliked much of the cast, they were mostly unlikeable to me outside of Chakotay, 7 (yum), Tuvok and the Doc. I found Janeway to be a terrible Captain, she was often letting her emotions get in the way, making bad decisions, but I still liked her. She was def better than Archer. Enterprise did start to get good before it was cancelled, but no thanks to Archer. Worst ever intro too!

Voyager's awesome intro, redone in 4k by a fan, pretty amazing

I'm having problems getting into DS9. I personally hate the ferengi. If I could genocide that race, I would. Fuck em. That said, I'm having problems accepting that they're not on a star ship or does that all change?

The first season of DS9 isn't very good. The Ferengi are portrayed terribly/one dimensionally too, but a couple of them become stellar characters (Quark namely) Things pick up in season 2 and really get going in season 3. The vast amount of characters really get fleshed out, including the enemies. Dukat is one of the great villains of all time.

There's a big war brewing and it gets fucking epic. As others have mentioned, there are some bad filler episodes throughout, but everything is worth watching , as it's rare there isn't something that's built upon later.

I actually really enjoy the holodeck filler episodes. I read Q is only in one episode though. <DCrying>

You need to stay on it.
