The Sad Case of Renan Barao

No, he didn't. Raphael Assuncao did, and now he's getting screwed.
Assuncao was hurt so TJ got gifted the shot. Fast forward and Raph is still hurt and may have been ready or may have not been.

So he gets to get fully healthy while Barao gets a rematch.

So TJ deserved that fight after defeating Mike Easton? Not a chance in hell and you want to know what the threads were when that happened? "TJ doesn't deserve this, he is going to get killed" so he pulls the upset and dominates Barao. But now Barao after gifting him that shot shouldn't get a rematch because of one bad performance?

That doesn't make any sense at all.

And I get it I would prefer Renan rebound and take another fight then get another shot.

But if Barao wants the rematch? The UFC and TJ are in no place to say no.

Because he saved a UFC PPV and because he gave TJ a shot when he didn't deserve one.

See how that goes full circle here?

Barao doesn't choose his opponents. Like I said the only thing you bring with you into the cage is your skills and if they aren't good enough you give credit where it's due

If you want to do this turn back the clock, redo thing, then we need to stop viewing this as a legitimate sport...

He is ready to fight and is getting screwed any way you slice it. How the fuck do you go 6-0 with a win over the champ and not get a title shot?

He shouldn't have done that.

You know your supposed to take turn for title shots or something like that.

Had Barao been a dominant champ IN the UFC such as Silva or GSP, I'd say a rematch is warranted. But in his case, Dillashaw beat him fair and square with no controversy. Hence, Assuncao should have gotten a shot. I'll even vote for Mizugaki before a rematch. Granted Barao has been a dominant fighter for nearly eight, nine years, this has nothing to do with his reign as an UFC champion.

He's not a bum who doesn't deserve an immediate rematch. He's an incredibly talented former champion who was thoroughly and decisively dethroned who doesn't deserve an immediate rematch.

Exactly this. He just got destroyed in his last fight by the champ. His UFC reign was similar to Rich Franklin's, and Franklin had to get two wins before getting another shot at Silva in a division that wasn't as deep as the current BW division.

Yea, to see a guy that deserves it, get passed over for this nonsense, pisses me off. I'm not going to lie.

Him trash talking about TJ not being a good striker made Dillashaa bitch smacking him across the ring in round 1 even funnier lol.

He's still a top 3 BW, he just has nothin for TJ and healthy Cruz

+1 well said.

Barao didn't gift TJ anything, he doesn't pick his fights. The #1 contender was injured so he fought the #2 contender. That's what champs do. Not to mention the fact that many people thought TJ beat Assuncao and was on a 6-fight winning streak.

Raph' wasn't going to be ready until suddenly he was after the fight came out. Everything I read said it would be longer, so is him rushing back for a shot really the best thing anyways?

He got hurt TJ capitalized it sucks. But if him waiting until the end of August and actually getting fully healthy is the worst thing? That's not so bad.

But his run hasn't exactly been great, I'd take Barao's over his as would everyone obviously.

Barao gifted TJ the shot though that's a fact. And just like everyone thought Dillashaw had no place in that fight, now people think Barao doesn't deserve this one either.

Raph will get his but Barao took a risk it back fired. But now they get the same length camp and he can make his adjustments.

The UFC did the right thing.

I've been a fan of this sport for over a dozen years, and it's always had a fickle, unrealistic fanbase.

I was among the many fans who figured TJ was just cannon fodder for Barao. TJ fought the fight of his life, and I think Barao might have bought a little too much of his own hype (something we've seen more than once in MMA history). It will be interesting to see how their rematch goes, and how Dominick Cruz will figure in all of this.

I think Barao is making a huge mistake fightimg him again so soon but who knows, maybe Barao will go in the and dominate.

He does actually have the choice to step up on two months notice and he did so. And he didn't fight the number two contender. He fought a guy who was Number 5 at the time and happened to be on the show that Barao was saving.

Perhaps it was a shitty idea on Baraos fight, perhaps no champion should step up like that. If that's how it has to be, so be it. But I for one am happy they are giving him a rematch. He's done enough to earn it.

And I will be rooting for TJ again, I just think that Renan is getting a raw deal from fans.

1/10

Dude got thoroughly dominated, unjustly gets rematch and TS is bumhurt over the truth.

It's not just in mma.

Spain won everything 6 years straight making a eurocup-world cup-eurocup run for the first time in history and then they lost to the netherlands and suddenly they're all crappy players lol

In mma it's the same thing. You can be 20 years undefeated with a 100-0 record against the best, but as soon as you lose your first fight you're the most overrated fighter ever.

TJ was the #2 contender, that's why he got the shot. You're talking about the media rankings which are far from official. Barao was going to fight TJ whether it was on UFC 173 or a later card. He decided he was ready, he had a full camp and the rest is history.
