The Sad Case of Renan Barao

I can only support immediate rematches if the guy gets robbed. The only thing you bring with you into the cage is your skills, and if they aren't good enough you give credit where it's due. By just handing these rematches you are basically cheating the fighters win and not accepting the result of the first fight

My thoughts exactly!

sorry but the immediate rematch is bullshit.
The UFC is setting too many bad precedents, it's not about Barao although this is a perfect situation actually because it's so clear and unfair.

So what if he beat up a bunch of cans previously? There is no denying he is a special fighter but the only thing that matters in respect to an IMMEDIATE rematch is if there was controversy in the first fight.

You say Barao "deserves" an immediate rematch based on factors entirely unrelated to the fight he just lost.

So explain to me how TJ Dillashaw, the man who came in as a massive underdog and was able to completely outclass the champ who was thought of as unbeatable "deserves" to have his once-in-a-lifetime performance devalued, his championship trivialized and his efforts shat upon just because his opponent had a nice record before he joined the UFC?

Why does he have to beat the champ twice to be the new champ when there was no controversy whatsoever in the first fight? How can you not smell that bullshit? Seriously.

I think this IMMEDIATE rematch will be a bad thing for Barao though. It will hurt him because he took a brutal beating and he's going to have to defeat a lot of inner demons and he's also going to have to reset his training and fight style to beat TJ. He needs to do all of that in a very short time. It would've been better for him to have a tune up fight so he could gain some confidence and recover from such a beating. I don't hate Barao, i feel like he was extremely overrated and it was a blasphemy to consider him no1 p4p or mention him in the same sentence with GSP , Anderson or Jones. But all that aside, he's a great fighter and he can do better in a rematch as long as it's not an immediate one.

As a fan of both fighters I don't like this immediate rematch at all for Barao.

Hell, I don't like immediate rematches period, let alone after being thoroughly dominated. i expect the fight to be similar to the first fight, i could be wrong tho

Great post, agreed.

Lucky for him they gave him an instant rematch so he can easily be considered the best at his division again if he wins this time around.

There isn't no one saying he isn't tough as nails, just a lot of us are tired of all these instant rematches the UFC is pumping out. A win over someone first and no one would be complaining.

I'm pretty sure there are far worst fan bases on this forum than Barao's. After the TJ fight the vast majority of threads referencing Barao have been largely negative with very little defense of Barao. Troll harder.

Who's trolling? It's not hard to see that Barao's fans can't justify why he should get an immediate rematch. The best they can do is bring up his record and some of them go as far as comparing his brief run as BW champ to Silva and GSP. It's the perfect description of sad cases.

Good post, completely agree.

He's not a bum who doesn't deserve an immediate rematch. He's an incredibly talented former champion who was thoroughly and decisively dethroned who doesn't deserve an immediate rematch.

It wouldn't be a sad case if:

1) Barao fought in the lightweight division or above; or
2) Barao spoke English; or
3) Barao wasn't dominated by TJ.

But as it is, a great fighter (32-2-0) and former champion is relegated to the footnotes of MMA history, never really having been noticed until he was defeated by an American.

: (

As far as Dana White is concerned, Dillashaw winning the BW title was a "fluke"
(Wasn't against an 100% Barao, sick etc)

That is why the rematch is happening so soon

Fuck excuses. He got dominated and KNOCKED THE FUCK into oblivion. I mean, I would have felt better if he won at least one round. But he didn't do shit.

The people against this immediate rematch are bigger fans of Barao than those who are for it. I would have much rather seen TJ defend against Assuncao while Barao bounced back against Mizugaki. Then I'd actually be hyped for the rematch. As it stands now, Barao is jumping right back into the fire shortly after getting his ass whooped. I hope he's had enough time to make the adjustments needed because we know that in the UFC if you go 0-2 against the champ you are basically irrelevant to the division.

Dodson got the finish on account of strikes against TJ.

Barao should have taken a page out of Jon Jones' book. Do not take short notice fights as the champion. Preparation is paramount. He put the UFC ahead of himself.

So TJ deserved that fight after defeating Mike Easton? Not a chance in hell and you want to know what the threads were when that happened? "TJ doesn't deserve this, he is going to get killed" so he pulls the upset and dominates Barao. But now Barao after gifting him that shot shouldn't get a rematch because of one bad performance?

That doesn't make any sense at all.

And I get it I would prefer Renan rebound and take another fight then get another shot.

But if Barao wants the rematch? The UFC and TJ are in no place to say no.

Because he saved a UFC PPV and because he gave TJ a shot when he didn't deserve one.

See how that goes full circle here?

i prefer the way the ufc handled the cain/jds and gus/jones rematches

if theyre the top two in the division, let them take a fight in between rematches (otherwise guys like assuncao and glover dont get the shot they earned). lets other people have a crack at the title and reminds us why theyre so good that they are fighting again

if barao really is the best, hed win his fight before the rematch anyways and other people get a chance to prove themselves against either tj or renan
