The Photography thread!

Nice pics brotatoes. I really need to grab a macro lens. I love close up shots of flowers and plants and whatnot. Bugs are neat but they’re so ugly idk if I want to look at them like that lol. Maybe spiders.

I heard canon made it so their cameras are incompatible with other brands’ lenses, is that true?

Not true. Canon can take most 3rd party or competitor lenses assuming it's a Canon mount or have an adapter.

Edit: imagur being so fucky I'll need to try this post again later when I have more time.

Lens came in yesterday and bought a new rapid camera strap. Part of me is looking forward to using it in Europe, but part of me isn't lol. It's mainly for when the wife wants photo ops. I'll have my trusty Fuji camera for street photography

So probably equivalent to the R6ii. I want one, but would rather use that money on another lens. If I do go all out with taking photos of my kids soccer games I wouldn't mind an older Canon EF 300 f2.8 IS or Sigma 120-300 2.8 Sport for more versatility. Both go for about $1500 give or take. I found a EF 400 2.8 selling for $2100. The paint is all beat up, but the optics/mechanics is still good per the seller. That lens is beautiful to use for outdoor sports. The IQ and DOF at 2.8 is amazing on that lens.

Yeah, used/refurbished is the way to go. I got a Tamron 24-70 2.8 G2 for about 40% off and it came in pretty good condition. Luckily, I don't have too many F mount lenses (the only other one that has any value is a Nikkor 50mm 1.8), so switching to Z mount shouldn't be a problem. I'd like to start off with the 24-120 f4s and the 50mm 1.8s. The first one should cover travel/walking around needs and the second should be more than adequate for portrait photography (hoping to start making some $$$ off that soon).

Once I uploaded this to imgur it wouldn't let me crop the bottom half of the photo without leaving a giant white space there instead. So I used the Windows Snipping tool to take just the part I wanted, then copied and pasted it here. I'm kind of surprised it worked. Anyway, point being, ignore the icons in the upper right. They're part of the image and I can't be bothered to edit them out at the moment.

Just now, though, I saw this tiny bit of text at the bottom of the page saying "revert to old design" and it worked. Made my day.

The phone takes some nice photos but I really have to try and get off my arse and blow the dust off my Nikon. It does a pretty decent job, I'd say.

Several years ago there was a Blood Moon here and I think it did a nice job for that.

@Andy Capp both good shots dude. I love the positioning of the mushroom with the plants going half way up and the trees in the background. Should also see what it's like black and white and play with the slider a bit. Could look fucking dope like that.
Good sunset too. Love how ya setup the sun to bounce off the still part of the water.

Also my battery charger died so I had to break out my old Canon 30D. Thankfully I got the handgrip with the AA battery sleeve. Gonna rock this shit old school for the time being.

Since I didn't take photos for a week I messed around drawing.

And found two drawings from when I started drawing around nov/december. Took influence from shots I took in Hamilton and Toronto. TO was an 8 hour/600 plus shot walk.

For the record, I set up fuckall. I just took a pic of what I saw; it was totally opportunistic. I don't have the patience to wait for the ideal shot. But I agree it turned out really well. I will certainly take your advice and check it out in grayscale; thank you.

Funny you should mention about your battery charger. I went to try to get a shot of the full moon and the Nikon wouldn't even power on--I've got it on the charger as we speak, which is a good thing seeing as how the missus needs it for her business next week and neither of us had any idea it was so totally dead. If not for this thread I might have never been reminded of it at all this particular evening.

The sun was setting even as the full moon was rising this evening. I tried to capture some pics with the phone camera but I'm not sure I did them justice. Upload incoming, as it were, so you can judge for me.

Regardless of the foregoing, thank you. I appreciate the encouragement to keep at it. The last several years have been difficult and I let a lot of "things" go by the wayside, including photography, but I'm trying to get "things" going again.

@Andy Capp It's not always about patience. Sometimes it's just about seeing a shot and taking it.

My photography teacher gave the best basic advice. Take a shot of what captures your eye. Everyone sees something different. You can have a sunset at the beach and one person sees the whole thing and takes a wide angle shot.
Another person may see the sun on the horizon with birds in front of it sitting on a log and then another person might see the reflection of peoples silhouettes reflecting off the water while they're standing on a sandbar. So take that
first shot ya see and go from there.

My photography teacher
Ohhhh to have a teacher.... I could really use a guide to help me learn how all the settings work on the camera. Come to think of it though, ChatGPT might be the way to go now since I can specify my particular model of camera and everything. I'll give that a try in a bit.

But yeah, thanks for saying that. It's what I've done since forever but I thought I was missing out by not preparing ahead of time.

We are 3/4 through our trip in UK/Europe and heading to Paris tomorrow, our last destination. Took out my Canon gear only once in London for a few hours. Will probably take it out 1-2 more times in Paris. Sadly at some point my SD card in my Fuji X70 camera got corrupted so I have a bunch of street shots that never saved. It sucks because some of my favorite shots (at least I think they were) were included. I usually look back at shots I've taken frequently, but since the app to transfer photos to my phone no longer supports my camera I wanted to go through it all at once at home. At least a switch to another SD card worked, but still bummed about the 1.5 days of shots that I lost. Hopefully I can get in the zone in Paris and capture some fun shots.

@boingyman ya might be able to save the card with software. I know sometimes you can get lucky. Long as ya don't format it there could be a tiny chance. Sucks man. I had a hard drive die one time and lost a chunk of photos. It was painful.

Also been using my 30D, but holy the dots. So many dots......
