The Photography thread!

Always loved nice pictures but never had a good camera I’ve only tried with my drone or phone. Did some research the last couple months & just got an a6000 for a great price so I’m going to learn! Very excited

Do you actually do portrait work professionally Baldy?

With a lot of effort. ;)

What software do you use now?

I'm still using Paint.NET. I don't think it's all that terrible, but I'm positive there are much better things out there. I've seen people use Autostakkert or other things to kinda cheat out a better picture of planets, and I don't like the way they look.

You use that for deepsky too? Do you stack pics?

@astrozician... didn't mean to quote you about the same thing. I was quoting you for context. I'm really pointing out something to @90 50.

@90 50 it turns out you can do astrophotography in high light pollution settings. Have you seen my threads? I started doing it about 1.5 years ago.
a friend of mine lives in the close suburb of Moscow, he has a Celestron telescope. 10" I think. Last time I visited him we peered into the skies a bit, now he bought a specialized astro camera to do planetary photos. Even with light pollution you can see and capture something. We plan on going on a short trip deeper into country some time later to try and make better photos.

I admit the Nikon ZF is quite tempting, not sure I'm ready to move totally to mirrorless yet given that theres still nothing with a superior sensor to my D850 but this might be a decent way to stick a toe in the water given its not THAT expensive.

I dig the retro look. However I will only be moving to top of the line mirrorless, and I am too not yet ready. For now I have same D850 as you do, and while mirrorless cameras provide some very nice features like eye-following autofocus, and new lenses are excellent, it is not yet a dealbreaker advantage for me, considering the cost.

The newer lenses would actually be the main draw for me although the only lens I'v paid big bucks for in recent years is a Laowa 15mm shift which loses nothing in being adapted(actually gains stabilisation and correct viewfinder metering). Not even totally sure I will go Nikon mirrorless if I upgrade, the Fuji GF system is tempting if ultimate stills image quality is what your after and the Laowa would be adaptable for that too.

The ZF is really tempting more as a casual/street kind of camera, I have an old Pentax K5 with a 40mm pancake I use at the moment which is pocketable but it is showing its age a bit.

So I still have all my old Canon gear (5D3) that I use very seldom. Mainly for my own family photos. I've been seeing used 70-200 2.8 II lenses go for $900-1000 on FB marketplace quite frequently and I'm guessing Canon will continue servicing this lens for a long time since it's pretty much the same optics as the mark 3. I've only rented this lens for paid gigs, but never did own one. Tempted to pick a used one up if I can snag one for $900 or less. I kind of want to start taking photos of my kids soccer games, but at the same time I don't want other parents to think I'm like an unofficial photographer for the team...

One advantage of the shift to mirrorless is the prices of used DSLR stuff is coming down quite a bit, most of it is still being sold new and can be adapted to mirrorless so I don't think you need to worry about it being unserviceable for quite a few years.

Yeah it's a solid lens that share the same mechanical parts of the mark 3 so it will continue to be serviced for a long time. There is someone selling one for $785 on the marketplace without tripod colar/hood/bag/box. I may low ball him for $700 given that OEM tripod ring/hood is another $100-120.

Would love to get a nice mirrorless system, but I just don't do photography enough to justify it. The one mirrorless camera I do want is a Fuji X100V, but it's pricey for a fixed lens ASP-C camera and I already have a X70.

I'm guessing you could probably count on Canon to service it for at least another decade and even if they stop others will probably carry on.

The X100V does seem like an upgrade from previous bodies in terms of build and a new lens(even if the specs are the same its performance at F/2 is sposed to be much better) which I spose why demand is so high making it hard to get and keeping used prices high.
