The Photography thread!

I've been getting back into astrophotography, bit by bit. In fact my avatar is a picture I took myself of the Orion Nebula. This is prime focus through my telescope (1000mm F/5) featuring the apparent sizes of the moon, Jupiter (bottom right), and Saturn (top right). I edited the picture to position the planets near the moon, but the image scale is true. In terms of seeing (stillness/clarity of the atmosphere) this was a terrible night.

Awesome! One day I'll get a telescope and do astrophotogaphy.

It's easy to spend a lot of time and money and frustrate the living bejeezus out of yourself. If you already have a DSLR, and want to do a quick snapshot of the moon, sun, and planets, then a $300 dollar Dobsonian-style (mirror) or a Maksutov, or along with a little know-how (going to dark sky site, jet stream forecast, etc.) will get you there, and you'd still have a respectable rig for visual observing.

Long exposure (Galaxy / Nebula / Clusters) ? That's a much larger world.

Do you think it's a good idea that we maybe share a little bit about ourselves in relation to photography? I think it may good to know peoples background. Heck even though I hate talking about gear it could be good to share what gear people use. If I have time later today I could start it off.
Sure dude, anything to do with photography/videography is fine.

You could do a write up, link a yt video whatever you like, the more the better imo

Nice, busting out the Red!

I shot a lot of photo and video over the years. Basically one day I said fuck it and I went training MMA in Brazil with a camera and soon became the in-house guy for photo and video. I mostly shoot fight stuff, street, skateboarding and sometimes erotic/fetish/adult content.

Basically, I can't seem to post any fucking pictures on this board, how do I do?

Damn, I read the title as "Pornography Thread" and was majorly disappointed when I entered.

Cliffs of my photography background.

-Photography Enthusiast

-Got into Photography in 2011. Was obsessed the first couple of years with learning.

-Gear: Canon 5D3, bunch of L lenses, primes, zooms, accessories. Fuji X70 camera. Besides the X70 I haven't bought anything photography related for over 4 years. There are 1 or 2 lenses I wouldn't mind getting and I still want the lateste X100 series camera, but I rather spend that money on my home gym.

-Did a little bit of everything from landscape, street photography, portraits, documenting events, weddings, selling stock photography

-Got turned off by a lot of various things in photography. Was really into landscape until I realized it wasn't for me and that I started to look like every other landscape photographer. It hit me when I was at the keyhole arch on Pfeiffer Beach. There was hundreds of photographers lined up to take the same shot. I knew then that this wasn't for me. I also got annoyed by the online behaviors of photography communities. Arguing about gear, circle jerking each other on photo sharing websites. Even I got sucked into that for a little bit at one point. It could be because I thrive more on raw feedback, whether negative or not. I want the truth. I'm also a photography snob and my worse critic. I think 80% of the work out there suck, 15% are either medicore or unoriginal and 5% that is good or even exceptional.

- I also got tired of all the paid work. It took too much out of time when it was just a side thing. I haven't done a paid gig for 2 years and my passive income from stock photography isn't what it use to be. I'm still down to second shoot a wedding or event though since it's one of those things I can do that requires no pre or post work. Give them the SD cards, get paid and my day is done. Whereas being the main for a wedding was exhausting from the prep work and moreso the post work after feeling like I got run over by a truck from shooting for 8-12+ hours straight.

-Found my passion with street photography and documentary/photojournalism style shooting. When I first found the Hardcore Street Photography(HCSP) community I I realized what good street photography was and it changed my vision forever. It even made me document better. I found my passion that was difficult and still don't have nearly enough true keeper shots to create a solid set or body of work. Here is the link to the group. I got two of my photos in there so now I can die happy, lol..... https://www.flickr.com/groups/94761711@N00/

-Now a days photography feels like a past time as I lost the mojo and desire to shoot especially since my second son was born. Photography also got bumped down as a hobby and powerlifting/working out is now my main priority when I do have free time.

@boingyman I feel you.

In the beginning the paid work feels great, now it feels like a chore. I kinda stopped enjoying photography and videography because of that. Some weeks I had to pump edit 7 to 20 videos, film maybe 2 nights of gigs and I just worked on autopilot.

I absolutely hate weddings, most of the work I do is nightlife, sports or corporate, and it has to pay well or I stick to my other ventures.

Gear... I'm a hustler... constantly buying and selling. Started with a Sony Nex 3, then bought a Sony Nex 5, then a Panasonic GH2 (that's where shit got real), Sony A77, Panasonic G3, Panasonic G5, Panasonic G6, Panasonic GF7, Panasonic GX800, Panasonic GM1, Pentax Q, Panasonic G7, Panasonic GF2, Panasonic G80, Panasonic G9, Panasonic GX80, Canon C100, Canon M50, Fuji XT series...

Camera elitism is bullshit, but very present. Had a old guy with a Nikon D5 make fun of one of my friends as he shoots on a Canon 80d and "Canon was for amateurs". When I saw his photos, it was clear that he was the amateur and hadn't mastered his gear. I shot a lot of paid work on my Panasonic GF7 after I lost nearly everything in a separation with my ex and never had one client complain.

Currently shooting with a Canon 7d mark 1 (still a monster), Canon 5d mark 3, Panasonic GM1 and a Sony A6000. Still kinda want to buy the Sony a7s2 or the Blackmagic Pocket 4k.

Feels bad you guys ran into those toxic types of people.

I’m a Canon shooter and have also shot Sony and gear elitism is just dumb.

Having said that I love my Canon gear and so far I’ve bought everything I knew I wanted and would use:

Canon 60d
Canon 5 D IV
16-35 f4
24-70 f4
50 1.4
70-200f4

I have a few flashes, remotes and lights.

Right now really dialing in my portrait skills, my forte (as it were) is shooting dogs, be it on the city streets, homes and dog shows.

I’ve shot the Bund here in Shanghai and so many temples and HuTongs etc

I actually really enjoy shooting my daughters. Volleyball games when I’m in LA too.

Thing is here, in Shanghai I’ve never met a single ass hole photographer, met plenty of weird and attention seekers but here the community is rock solid, bunch of people from all over down to help, organize photo walks, suggestions and deals.

LA is full of wannabes and hasbeens from my experience, which is a shame but it really seems the whole brand loyalty thing is very much alive in the US.

Most of the wildlife was shot on a canon L series 70-200mm 2.8, the monkey was probably on the 24-70.

The last one is from a series of UV body paint photos I did a few years back. Fun project, but it is a pain in the ass to shoot using almost exclusively black lights. At least it was with the lights I had. I'm sure there is probably expensive UV lighting set ups you can get, but I wasn't making enough off those shoots to justify anything fancy.

70-200 2.8’s are quite expensive but worth their weight in gold.

So versatile. I love mine even though it’s not the latest model you’d have to pry it from my dead hands.

They are big and heavy but worth it. So much you can do with it , especially if you chunk a 1.5x in your pocket when you go out.

That and a 50 1.4 in your pocket and you don’t even need to bring the bag.

I've used Nikons my whole life: D70s, D200, D300s and then D750. Like them a lot and still have the D750.

But last summer, I got the a7iii with the intention of using it to shoot primarily quality 4k video. But, I absolutely love that camera for everything now including pictures. The battery life is actually really good. It's very close to the D750.

I use both still, but I use the a7iii more often now. (And the Merrill and IR converted Ricoh I got this summer.)
Nikon lifelong shooter here too.

I only currently have my f3, EM, D200 , d3300 and my D3 that you’d have to pull from my dead hands.

I do miss at times my D2x for the high speed crop doing boat racing photos. (I drag race boats)

I got the d3300 for the woman to use after she broke my D80, fuck I loved that camera.

I use imgbb.com

You could also try Flickr
Flickr is a pain in the ass to go to and load photos from it to a website. So much so I stopped using it and even forgot my log in and user name.

The photobucket debacle has killed my photography uploading.

Some of the older models on the used side are getting closer to my price point.

The accessories kill you though the storage media and the lenses adapters etc and the batteries. Fuck man.

I will have a red one day

At least with the Nikon mount adapter I don’t have to buy any lenses

I’ve looked into some and the adapters for my Nikon dslr’s but never pulled the trigger.

My 400 2.8 with a 2x tele is what I used to do most of my moon shots with

What I like about the Gemini 5K is that it's a Super35 sensor but it's on the larger side. It's actually slightly bigger than their 8K Super35 sensor (Helium) so it has big pixels for gathering lots of light. It's actually based on a sensor they designed for NASA for doing deep space photography. So it has great low light capabilities. Which is good because then you don't need to buy lights lol

<seedat>

And yeah, gotta rent lenses unfortunately. What I would give for a nice set of Cooke's...
