The Philosophy of Cloud Atlas

Here, I'll summarize this thread...

Cliffs:
1. Cloud Atles, best movie of all time?
I never asked this question. I said it is personally my favorite of all time.
2. It was a bit to long and all over the place.
That's an opinion, I'm fine if you feel that way. I and others don't have a hard time with the movies multiple storylines.
3. None of you understand anything.
Never said that. I hypothesized 3 reasons for why people don't seem to like it. Reading over audience reviews on RT you can clearly put those that didn't like it into those 3 categories. They openly say they didn't get it, that it was too long, that it was too scattered, and so on.
4. So do you all agree now that is the best movie ever?
I have not asked that question once in this thread.
5. Not really...
ok
6. All of you are morons !! Now agree with me!!
Again, didn't happen. Some people explained their criticism of the film and I articulated why their criticism was misguided. "ITS SOCIALIST PROPAGANDA! One of the messages is 'the state knows best!'" when there's not an iota of truth to that, and actually it's the opposite and frequently references one of the most prominent anti-statist writers known to man.

In summary, literally nothing you said here is true.

Veganism, bitcoins, pretentious movies.

You're so woke

Literally everything I posted in my cliffs happened on the first page...

True story.

...what? Literally the opposite of that is true. You clearly dont even know what you watched. How is a movie "socialist propaganda" when the great enemy of communism, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn is referenced multiple times throughout the movie and in Son Mi 451s timeline they are living in a dystopic hellhole??
Well, i'm not easily swayed or distracted by ironic hipster pretences and namedropping so have no problem just picking up on the overarching message of the movie:

"Life is messy - hell we don't even know what time we're in here - let's regulate everything"

I mean, shit, was it sponsored by the EU?

But i get that you love the movie so you turn a blind eye to the 'soft socialism' message and enjoy other things about it - i guess that's what makes art such a personal experience.

Can you provide some examples of what you're talking about? I feel like you're thinking about another movie. There are no messages throughout the movie about "the state knows about" or "life is messy, let's regulate everything". The opposite is true about Cloud Atlas as they often portray the abuse of state power and how it can give rise to authoritarianism. I've watched this movie probably 20 times and I have no clue what you're talking about.

I'm starting to wonder if TS is a gimmick. Every single thread he makes follows the same formula.

my theory about people thinking cloud atlas is bad is that they themselves are flaky ignorant cunts that try to hide their lack of depth in thinking by using words like "pretentious" or the like.

Could be.
Maybe one day it’s looked back on as a monument work as influential as Rene Descartes work or taught in schools on the level of Ernest Hemingway’s novels .
Or maybe it’s some pretentious Tom Hanks flick by those weird cats that did the matrix.
Who knows??????

liked it, but wasnt really impressed. gotta give it another try.

Maybe I should give it a go now?
Depends on your view of pre-digital cinema. If you think films from the 90s are hokey then it may give your suspension of disbelief some trouble. CLOUD ATLAS asks for a lot of latitude, and the really hard part about that is the story isn't especially new, not even for the Wachowskis.

Why do you fucking pricks feel the need to do this shit? I make a thread, and you morons rush in and flood it with negativity. Wtf are you talking about a "formula"? People gave me their criticism of the film and I responded in kind, politely. Every fucking thing I post you fucking douchebags attack me with negativity. Dont you have something better to do?

Jesus man. Settle down.

Holy fuck.

No. I am seriously fucking sick of it. You're like the 3rd person to do this shit in this thread alone. EVERY, FUCKING, THING I post, you assholes flood my thread with your bullshit instead of just talking about the thread/OP/relevant topics. God damnit I am completely done with this bullshit.

I post this thread wanting to share this video. Some people respond with their personal criticism of the film, I respectfully respond to their criticism and point out why I think they're wrong (like that @tonysmasseuse guy, I'm fairly certain he's talking about another movie. There is absolutely nothing in cloud atlas about "the state is god" or "lets regulate everything" or "the state knows best", it has literally nothing to do with cloud atlas, at all), then the next thing I know "HAHA DERP EISBAR IS UPSET EVERYONE ELSE DOESN'T THINK ITS THE BEST MOVIE EVER" when I literally never asked that question. Then, idiots like you pile on with your negative bullshit. I am totally and completely fucking done with it.

The mayberry used to be a place where you could have polite casual conversation about a variety of topics. Then these nu-:eek::eek:s come along and bring their shitty negative internet trolling culture from 4chan, the misc and elsewhere with them.

I am not sure really what he means with that first or last statement. It does ask for a lot of latitude because they use the same actors playing a number of different roles, all of which are excellently executed. The one timeline where it becomes a stretch is in the Son Mi 451/sci fi storyline, where a number of white american actors are facially augmented to appear asian.

I really don't know what he means by saying the story isn't really new. I have never seen a film like it. 6 different stories from 6 different timelines and 6 different genres, with all stories building upon the previous (chronologically), depicting the endless struggle between tyranny and liberty and how our lives and actions are intertwined and ripple across time. I'm not aware of another story similar to that.

I've been wanting to watch this movie forever as it is on Netlfix now. That said I never find myself feeling I can pay attention for a whole 3ish hours. Or I'm with my wife and watching a movie with her you damn sure better watch one that isn't complicated because she just can't help talking through it.
