The Opiod Epidemic

Sometimes dead men do tell tales.

2016: THE FIRST YEAR THAT OPIOID OVERDOSE RESULTS IN MORE DEATH THAN GUN VIOLENCE IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

It's such an issue that there's even an argument criticizing Trump's response, claiming he didn't go far enough when declaring it a "Public Health Emergency", instead of a "National Emergency" (which would unlock FEMA funds).

Imagine liking Lil Peep. <6>

Cause FEMA has worked spectacularly in the recent past.

20,000 overdoses means a lot more whose lives are in a bad way. Death toll doesn't even come close to telling the story.
every overdose is also parents at their wits end, victims of crime done to fund it, strain on health and welfare services, and increased police resources needed.
my best mate smokes weed, has done for 20 years, never been arrested, kept a job, good to his mom etc.
his brother on the other hand is a total fuckup recovering addict, with a record as long as your arm, who sends his mom nuts with worry, nearly been killed by various dealers and assorted enemies hes fucked over several times, sevaral prison terms, has 2 kids with 2 different , i hesitate to use the term "women" he never sees , who will probably grow up just as fucked up as him, is a strain on doctors, hospitals social services, the police and frankly anyone he comes into contact with.
oh yeah, the little cunt has never had a job or paid taxes either, if he makes it to 40 i would be surprised.
every addict is just the centre of a giant ball of shit that affects everyone around them.

One of our Judges was the Drug Court judge for near a decade. When he has to sentence someone to a prison term for fucking up... AGAIN... I can almost seem him close to tears cause he invested so much emotionally into the idea of Drug Court helping people.

Would it be heartless to suggest that we ramp up incarceration of people caught with opiods? Or would the sarcasm not be obvious enough?

(30, and I like "rappers" who actually rap, not shittily sing a chorus 12 times, and call it a day)
Yeah, I like Biggie, 2Pac, Nas, Wutang, NWA, Ice Cube/West Side Connection, Dr Dre, Xzibit, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, Big L, etc. Grew up on 90's rap and rock, it was pretty good.

I don't really understand any of the new club mumble rap. I'm 30.

There is still a shit ton of great rap out there, this Lil Peep, Gucci Gang shit is not it, or approaching it. I dont see how someone could listen to Aesop Rock or J Cole, then be the least bit interested in Lil Peep. It would be like listening to prime Metallica or Slayer, then going to Limp Bizkit.

Jeff Sessions is probably struggling with this question every day. He doesn't want to go full "crack epidemic" in the suburbs, but he's considering a pilot program in Atlanta...

I get what you're going for a but a big issue I see with the "don't throw people in prison who posses drugs" thing is a lot of the people that GO to prison on drug charges... usually the charge that sends them to prison isn't the drugs, it's the damn burglary they committed to get money to obtain MORE drugs to feed their habit.

In those instances, the State and laws have tied prosecutor's hands as they aren't able to offer Drug Offender Sentencing Alternatives cause "burg" can fall under the "violent crime" sorta umbrella.

its pointless unless they have no access to drugs inside, and get mandatory detox and support., youd need an army of social workers and drug treatment centres though.
it might help if the fuckers who started this by misprescribing, distributing and advertising it were hammered in the wallet, and some of them did time.
i suppose the horse has bolted now, fentanyl is coming in from mexico .

I totally agree. I can think of 5 people that I grew up with off the top of my head and know well that had some serious problems with opiods that eventually lead to heroin. They all beat it but they were pretty bad. Another friend of mine died from an overdose. They all came from good family's too. The one that died was super smart. He had a Masters Degree and played Division 1 hockey.

Yeah it hits home for me too, and most people I know. Seems like the most common way is by getting injured and dependent- so the drug finds you and not the other way around. I think we need to investigate drug manufacturers in the same way we did cigarette manufacturers, to see if they're intentionally making their products more addictive.

They do that with Meth. There are a couple small towns that are close to me that were getting hit really hard with meth and once somebody Narcs the police will raid the house a put these people in prison for having a meth lab. They weren't fucking around with these sentences either.

I'm not too big on the war on drugs, but I'm fine with people getting the book thrown at them when it comes to meth. That shit can rip apart a small community.

I know prosecutors that aren't as pissed when having to try heroin because in their opinion "yes, heroin can fuck a person up, it can fuck up their family, and leaves a huge problem in the neighborhood but ultimately it's still a plant derivative. Meth is fucking bleach people are smoking basically"
