The Jazz Thread

This one isnt pure jazz, but it has elements.

Windows Vista came with a dozen or more tracks of varying genres. It came with the track "OAM's Blues" by The Aaron Goldberg Trio and it blew me away. I got lucky and found the album "Worlds" online and have been listening ever since... so good!

I've posted a lot of my favorite jazz albums in the past, so I'm not going to do it again. But I'll post what I'm currently listening to at the moment:

My son is mathematically inclined and very type A. He can’t stand jazz. I’ve always linked the two.

Listen, dude. We have similar tastes in heavy metal so I don't want to come across as a hostile dissenter, but I'll have to respectfully disagree with that statement.

I, too, am mathematically inclined (majored in Computer Engineering in university) and a huge fan of jazz. I know of other mathematically inclined people who listen to other genres which I don't find to be complex or interesting (modern rap, reggaeton, bland pop music). From what I've seen in academia over the years, there is no correlation between the complexity level of an intellectual pursuit and that of a favorite musical genre.

Also my feelings Malmstein and Satriani

Hold up. Satriani plays with emotion and from the heart. Malmsteen, on the other hands, plays for the sake of showing off his speed and musical complexity. The latter is pedantic and pretentious, not to mention arrogant; the other is not.

Used to play Marsalis’ Joe Cool Blues for my niece. Whimsical Marsalis!

I never really got it either. Musical nonsense.
Every piece I hear has one thing I like and the rest is trash
It got a fair chance from me and it shall live on in elevators everywhere

Never knew till you posted it that the Elvis Costello album for Almost Blue (his country record, which is actually quite good imho) was inspired by that one. Classic design. Beautiful music. Thanks for posting.

Different tastes for different people. I personally like some of it, but to tell someone they are wrong because they do not enjoy jazz is nonsense. Technical profeciency and enjoyability do not always go together. Musical enjoyment is not a meritocracy based on technical wizardry. It is what connects with someone, and it varies person to person. As a parallel there are probably dishes prepared by Michelin star chefs with the highest level of technical skill that would not taste good to my palate. I would not be "wrong" for not enjoying it.

You do you ts.

Hey @MadDildo why did this get moved to the music section?

It was an honest discussion about the merits of the genre and not a "look at this song" thread.

Surely the discussion aspect allows it's survival in Mayberry. Right?

I'm partial to a lot of Miles, Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Mingus, Bill Evans, Chet Baker.

Purists hate it but I loves me some fusion too...Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, Ponty.

Can't forget one of the greatest albums and songs of all time

I was listening to this just last night.

Frank Sinatra's album with Count Bassie is phenomenal as well

Holy shit that is the next album on my stereo waiting to be played.

I've only listened to the first track a couple of times so far, I need the full album in one go to get really into it.

I'm on Herbie Mann's Flute Souffle at the moment

Here are a few that I've spent time with recently

Best version of 'Long as You Know You're Living Yours' I can find on youtube...

I'm not a huge fan of any jazz post 70's, but this is the shit

This tune has gotten a lot of millage over the years on my turntable

Some good modern jazz, especially if you like Kind of Blue...
