The Jazz Thread

i enjoy most genres of jazz, from dreamy experimental stuff ala Pat Matheny, over simple crisp melancholy tunes ala Chet Baker, aaalll the grand divas of smooth jazz Sarah Vaughan, Ella, Billie, Dinah etc. Love crazy bebop and funky collaborations. I'm in love with Al Jarreau's creativity and sheer vocal equibrilism, and George Benson - omg, just everything about him.

But most of all i love groovy big band jazz with funky bass and a big fuck-off horn section, the bigger the better

I'm partial to a lot of Miles, Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Mingus, Bill Evans, Chet Baker.

Purists hate it but I loves me some fusion too...Return to Forever, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Weather Report, Ponty.

Can't forget one of the greatest albums and songs of all time

Well, I’d probably start with the mountain of mathematical relationships found within the music.

But no... it must be your kid who’s good at math and has shitty taste in music who’s right...

We could discuss music, jazz and your belief your the only one who understands the relationship between math and music. How his training in and appreciation of classical music and blues plays into that theory and his appreciation of them

We could go into how this changes as you get into jazz.

Or you can just keep posting snide remarks followed up by stock sherdog gifs.

It’s been a pleasure.

You realize you’re talking to someone proficient in both jazz and classical, on multiple instruments (who in the words of another sherdogger plays at the elite level), who’s been doing it twice as long as your kids been alive, right?

Also, news flash. You kid doesn’t like it, because he can’t hear it. When you see him, tell him when I was in my early 20’s, a proficient classical player, with years of theory and ear training under my belt. I felt the same way.

Then I put in the work.

It’s very easy to play what the black dots tell you to. Spontaneously composing music at the highest levels of difficulty in real time, is a whole other level of good.

On a very serious note, if he waits too long to study it and put in the work, he’ll regret it immensely.

Back in the real world, your experience adds weight to your credibility.

Furthermore, the number of folks who are proficient in both classical and jazz are comparatively very low.

It strikes me that anyone talking about both styles of music who can’t play them both proficiently, is not someone who’s opinion should carry much weight.

Not to mention the fact that the statement “people who are good at math don’t like jazz”, is fucking retarded.

I realize I am talking to somebody in a media where they can say or claim whatever they want.

If you are an “elite musician” you should understand different music speaks to different people.

As is misquoting people and getting overly worked up about this. Again, different people respond to different music. Based on my conversations with my son - who you’ve never met- that’s the link I’ve made for him, based on those discussions

That’s not jazz. That’s appropriating douchebags. True jazz is chaos and anarchy.

My son is mathematically inclined and very type A. He can’t stand jazz. I’ve always linked the two.

A - I have already shown my playing to a non bias sherdogger in the war room who requested I send him a clip of my playing. Here is his comment, which I did not ask for him to make publicly. Our discourse took place via PM.

B - “True Jazz is anarchy and chaos”

This is an entirely false statement.

C - being mathematically inclined and type A is linked to not being able to stand jazz.

Stated with zero factual basis, your evidence is the anecdotal case of your son.

“Getting worked up”

If that’s what you call informing people who have no clue what they’re talking about, that they in fact have no clue what they’re talking about, then,

{<Mcgoat}

Maybe instead of dismissing my comments, you should tell him what I said. Because in reality, I was once in his same shoes.

If he doesn’t study it, he WILL at some point either regret it, or lose a gig to a more well rounded player.

I agree. I do like some jazz. But often times the musicians are so into the musicianship of the song, and making sure they do some kind of cool polyrhythm and mode change, that they lose sight of the concept of writing a good song. You know, one that actually sounds good.

It’s masturbatory bullshit a lot of times.
Also my feelings Malmstein and Satriani

Jazz lends itself to exploring more about the sessions, the musicians, etc. For example iirc the arrangement on that one's by Nelson Riddle who also worked with Nat King Cole & Ella Fitzgerald.

Alot of it can suck, but theres some good shit out there.

I find Jazz mixed with other genres really enjoyable.
