Movies The Green Knight (2021)

My wife and I watched it ages ago and both thought it was poor.
Reasonable opinion because it absolutely sucked. Often you see Emperor's New Clothes type praise on the shittiest shows/movies here.

Agreed let's fight them!

Wow. We could not be more at odds over this. The Northman I enjoyed from start to finish, whereas the other was uninteresting and odd for no payoff.
I wouldn't say I disliked it(I own it on UHD), the production is very impressive but to me it felt like it would have been better off as a pulpier film, nothing wrong with a Viking revenge story but Eggers seemed to be trying to make something with a bit more substance which I didn't think it really had.

We get some stuff which highlights the lead character and his father obviously not being "good" but ultimately it is a revenge film were furthering the dynastic legacy of the Vikings in the catharsis. Again it felt like a museum piece to me, a telling of the original Amleth story without really having much to say itself were as even as far back as Shakespear was adapting it to tell contemporary drama/morally with Hamlet and many versions of that obviously updated to tell a story of their own time.

Thats why I think The Green Knight is much more successful, it takes a story from a similar kind of era but its a very contemporary telling off it. Not just by having a British Asian lead but the story is really his character is a much more modern look at being a hero, the catharsis is his realising that his grasping for(or being thrust towards) simplistic ideas of heroism/kingship without really having true morally and bravery will be a disaster.

Again though it is obviously a slow and quite obtuse film which askes a good deal of the viewer, I can see it not being for everyone.

If you mean the lead characters race he's shown as being Morgana's son and she's shown as a Romani sorceress, besides that it is obviously a fantasy and race is never mentioned.

Personally I thought this was much better than The Northman, Eggers obcession with just telling the legend as it was ends up with a bit of a bland film for me were as this does feel like more than a museum piece.

Bare in mind its a fairly obtuse atmospheric arthouse film though not some easy to consume blockbuster.
Northman was excellent.

Exactly!
I agree Green Knight not great .......... but the Northman had a good first 30 min then it just became weird , boring, an gross . I actually really wanted to see it and even paid the 20 bucks on Prime to rent early - i don't think I finished it yet. Really dissapointed

I watched it alone in the cinema so maybe that effected it, but I didn't get bored, which may be because I'm a history nerd and the faithful production of everything I found particularly exciting. Maybe try again?

Northman is supposed to be historically accurate ? I think that was well before Ragnar right?

I basically enjoy the Northman for the reasons you mention here. It was an unusual mix of style and realism.

A short while after Ragnar I think, a few decades. Northman culture, setting, props, language etc were all fantastic. From what I understand there's liberties taken with the plot and there's mystical stuff, but I've got no horse in the plot race and I like a bit of mysticism.

I like Dev Patel in Chappie and Monkey Man but couldn't get into this movie for whatever reason.
