The Russians only have themselves to blame for perceived territorial losses and loss of influence. They overthrew and killed off their own line of Emperors, and then the USSR collapsed in a heap at their direction. There was no foreign invasion or stirred-up rebellion, the smaller countries largely stayed loyal to the Empire/Soviet Union until the end came.

It's really just a matter of Russia not being a stable, dependable ally capable of providing prosperity and security, that has caused all of the countries in its vicinity to look elsewhere for support.

Thing is, even Finland would love to do good business with Russia to this day, because it's such a huge boon to our economy, but it's just impossible to do business with a country that constantly makes threats and shows hostility towards its neighbours, while breaking prior agreements. Not to mention that Russia's economic power has waned greatly under Putin's direction, to the point where it has become pretty easy to look for other options.

Until the end of WW2, most every country with the military power to expand their frontiers did so without question. It could be argued nuclear weapons reduced that ambition to spreading influence with proxies while avoiding any head to head conflicts. All the major powers have done this... They're still trying to exert their global power and influence... just indirectly. The US is the just the best at it currently.
