The Russians only have themselves to blame for perceived territorial losses and loss of influence. They overthrew and killed off their own line of Emperors, and then the USSR collapsed in a heap at their direction. There was no foreign invasion or stirred-up rebellion, the smaller countries largely stayed loyal to the Empire/Soviet Union until the end came.

It's really just a matter of Russia not being a stable, dependable ally capable of providing prosperity and security, that has caused all of the countries in its vicinity to look elsewhere for support.

Thing is, even Finland would love to do good business with Russia to this day, because it's such a huge boon to our economy, but it's just impossible to do business with a country that constantly makes threats and shows hostility towards its neighbours, while breaking prior agreements. Not to mention that Russia's economic power has waned greatly under Putin's direction, to the point where it has become pretty easy to look for other options.

"Look at all the land we lost" isn't exactly a win.

Their point is quite obvious to anyone with a functioning brain.

They are not going to attack neighboring countries to land grab (like Russia is doing) based on historical land ownership. They respect the sovereignty of their neighbors and are peaceful.

You know this. Don't play dumb.

The point is weakness isn't virtue. it would make sense if countries like america or china said that, but they're not. no shit Mongolia ain't attacking anyone, they're not in a position to.

Restraint is respectable when there's power behind it, not when there's impotence.

yeah, russia at least has the theoretical chance of getting some back. and it's not like they lost 95% of their territory like mongolia did.
1 out of every 200 men are direct descendants of Ghengis Khan. Are we sure Mongolia did not win, or at least Ghengis did not win?

There's like 3 or 4 US States with a higher GDP than Russia

lol at the thinking they even could in the last 400 years. It's a silly point to make. Until the end of WW2, most every country with the military power to expand their frontiers did so without question. It could be argued nuclear weapons reduced that ambition to spreading influence with proxies while avoiding any head to head conflicts. All the major powers have done this... They're still trying to exert their global power and influence... just indirectly. The US is the just the best at it currently.

And if Mongolia had the military power to spread their frontiers in the last 200-300 years, you don't think they would have?

Of course they would have.

would you keep the same energy If the Natives decided to do some "theoretical chance" and scalp whatever left of your hairline?
There’s No Honor in that scalp,
Let him keep it and live a long life…

Indirect influence is preferable to invading a neighboring sovereign country, destroying their cities and killing its citizens (not to mention hundreds of thousands of casualties on your own side).
