Multiplat The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion Remastered Discussion

There's so much about this game I've forgotten, but one thing I never forgot about was the pain in the ass it was to cure vampirism. It takes forever to cure if you let it go too far, made me triggered by vampires.

I thought I was being cautious of vampires in the remaster, never taking a shot by one, I thought. Sure enough, I thought I was glitched as I caught on fire when the sun came up, but it's vampirism!

Thankfully we can still go out in daylight, so long as we feed, and we can change back easier/at will if we upgrade the Vile Lair DLC that comes with this game.

I'm going to run with this for a while! It does prevent a lot of quests though.

I never had that Vile Lair DLC in the og, so if you get bit without knowing like me, it's here.

Yeah, it's the worst part of the game, and it seems unavoidable. I've never been able to avoid it, and I seriously don't even know how I get it. I'll just wake up, and I'll get the message. Haven't even fought a vamp. I think you can get it by simply sleeping in an inn that has a vampire in it.

Do we get it regardless, or at random? I did get some message when I slept in a tent for an hour about some vampire biting me I think, but it was worded like a dream. We get random things that pop up after a sleep or waiting.

I started smoking/losing health as soon as the sun came up shortly after, so i dont think i was actually bitten, as I thought it took a while for any ill effects to take hold.

Yeah, that's the message I always get. I honestly don't know how you get it, though. Of all the times I've played this game, it just happens. I only remember this one time where I talked to some guy that looked kinda vampire-y at an inn, but it was just an NPC with no indicator that he was a vampire. Woke up and got the message. That's why I think it's gotta have something to do with getting bitten in your sleep. I've even got this huge ass strategy guide from way back, and IIRC it doesn't even tell you how you actually get it. It just gives you a build guide, and a step by by step walkthrough of some insane sequence of fetch quests to get rid of it.

There are some dialogue options where you can be "gifted" vampirism from vampire characters and some very rare items can infect you but the more common way of getting it is from fighting vampires.

In magic tab in the UI you'll see an indication under active effects that show whether you have contracted a disease or not. The vampire disease is called Pophyric Hemophilia and it's disease effect is drain fatigue. In the remaster you also have a visual indicator now if your character is diseased as they will turn pale and sickly looking.

You have 3 days to cure the disease using a spell or visiting a shrine during which time your character will have nightmares indicated by a dialogue pop up whenever you rest. After this time when you rest you will awaken as a vampire.

Thanks guys, it was driving me nuts.

I remember seeing that affliction in the OG, but I never got it here, though I wasn't always checking. The two times I actually fought vampires I did check my status and watched for any character changes though, so I have no idea how /when I got infected. I remember getting a prompt IIRC in the OG when I contracted the disease.

Oh well, at least I can level my guy up more finding the cure, and closing more gates, before starting the brotherhood quest and other better ones, you get some good stuff from those missions from what I remember.

I don't recall how they did it in the OG, but in this version, from what I saw, the stats for special weapons/gear are tied to what level you are when you get them. Unique armors and weapons that should be kick ass will be shit forever. I'm only level 10 I think.

The level scaling does seriously suck and is something they should've factored into their QoL changes for the remaster. The workaround is just to hold off until level 25 before you collect any uniques, not that that isn't a sucky workaround as well.

In one of the DLCs there is a way of levelling up the DLC items you find at lower levels so it's a shame they didn't apply this across the board.

Bethesda's official discord has opened a suggestions forum so they may be willing to implement some more changes but it might not be more than bugfixes(if that).

In the absence of official mod support for the remaster i hope due to the success of the remaster that they might implement something like the creation club and curate some of the more popular OG mods as additional content for consoles.

In the OG there was a bug at the end of the quest you do to cure your vampirism were you could keep collecting the reward money from the Count of Skingrad as many times as you wanted. I use to get infected with Vampirism ASAP to start that quest line so I could abuse that bug to get a ridiculous amount of gold right away lol.

when i first bought oblivion i did all the main quest stuff and i remember doing some stupid quest to cure vampirism. that's about all i did in the game so most of this stuff is fresh to me. i didn't really explore every nook and cranny like i did in skyrim. kinda glad i held off.

now i'm holding off the main quest and doing everything else first. though because i ain't advancing the main story i've been doing everything with two unkillable followers who are kinda taking some of my glory away. i think i'll still keep them around as the game is starting to get a bit harder now even in full daedric armor and the daedra in oblivion gates were giving me a rough time. so for now i'm just gonna finish up with the mages guild stuff and then start enchanting stuff to make things easier.

yeah the item leveling sucks. thats why one of the first things i did was power level past 30 so i wouldn't have to worry about any of those quests that give leveled items.

i got a little carried away with it though. i maxed out acrobatics, alchemy, alteration, armorer. conjuration, illusion, mysticysm, restoration, light armor, heavy armor, security, sneak, i'm a few points off maxing mercantile, and i've hit level 38 and maxed every main stat except personality - almost done - and luck.

the types of enemies i'm facing are way more extreme now but i don't mind. my power leveling grind game too strong. i even got speechcraft past 50 and that's the dumbest shit ever. i don't think i'll bother much with hand-to-hand and maybe even block, unless there's like a cheesy way to level that shit up fast.

Nice! I fast kind of tracked the main questline on the 360 as well. I did do a lot of quests, but left a lot on the table, including the Shivering Iles DLC. On top of the things I've forgotten, I have lots of new stuff I can look forward to.

Good freaking times!

Not sure what you're playing on, but there's a mod that levels up uniques with you. I'm tempted to DL, but this early in the release I don't want to mess around with things that could Bork my progress.

The only mod I've downloaded is a free camera thing to take pics, but unfortunately there's way to turn the hud off without using the console and disabling achievements. There's an achievement reenable mod, but both on nexus have a lot of bugs.

It really needs a proper photo mode. This game is damn stunning!

doing one of the fighters guild quests and it made me give these 3 armored up npc's weapons and then have them join me in a cave raid and the 3 idiots just yolo'd themselves into a big mob of savage goblins and died almost instantly.

i think i'm supposed to keep them alive but oh well. their fate is on them for going all leeroy jenkins like that.

i fucked up the rat quest too lol.

Its already the third best selling game of the year, behind only Monster Hunter and Assassins Creed

This is great news! We already saw that a Fallout 3 remaster was leaked as well, which will also sell like gangbusters and give gamepass users more content. This all but guarantees a New Vegas and Morrowind remaster/remake as well. M$ won't leave that kind of easy $$ on the table. Who knows, maybe it will even lead to Fallout 1/2 getting much needed makeovers.

I'd really like to see Virtuos remaster the Gears trilogy as well, and bring Fable 2 to modern systems.

My hope is it really sets the template for remasters too. You dont need to modernize everything. Give it a fresh coat of paint, maybe a couple QoL changes, but you can even keep the "jank". Don't try to update it to recapture the experience of playing it for a modern audience. Just give that experience itself.

If they remastered morrowind and new Vegas I’d be set for like two years. I’m really enjoying the oblivion remaster. I tried revisiting Morrowind a year or so ago but the graphics are just too dated.

Agreed, I never saw this quality type of remaster coming from Bethesda. I love the way they dropped it too, and at a great price point.

It was really smart of them to keep so much of the jank/charm. Def the gold standard of a remake/remaster.

It is missing that painting/vibrant high fantasy look of the OG, but It's not as egregious as the Demon's Souls remake, which lost a lot of the soul of the OG, mind the pun.

I downloaded a reshade set for Oblivion called painted world, which brings it closer to the OG.

I'm curious how they'd handle Morrowind. It would be "easy" for them to add full voice acting and a bunch of graphical/animation overhauls, but I never liked the melee combat. It always felt like swinging a ruler. There's no impact either, and it's a dice roll.

The Skywind overhaul seems to have it solved, as it's just using a stepped up version of Skyrim's engine and melee system, so I hope they do something like that for any official remaster.

That may piss off a lot of OG fans, and it will drastically the skill system, but I know it's always a gripe for new people trying Morrowind for the first time, along with the dated graphics/draw distance.
