The Dungeons and Dragons Megathread v2

I've had a chance to do more than just skip the Origins UA.

Each background grants a feat and a +2/+1 stat bonus. Looks like humans get two feats at first level (background and choice from a very limited list).

Cantrips. No eldritch blast listed. I expect this will go back to being a Warlock class feature like it was in 3.5. No booming blade, green flame blade, mind spike, but this is for the PHB could still be in a later supplement. Hope they fix crappy true strike.

Spells. Arcane list includes 5e Warlock spells (armor of Agathys, arms of Hadar, hellish rebuke, hex) and bard spells (vicious mockery, dissonant whispers). Hope they fix crappy witch bolt.

Similar for divine and primal (compelled duel divine, hunter's mark primal).

Just a list of first level spells for each arcane, divine, primal, no descriptions.

Been playing every week, but haven't had a chance to post any updates. Would like to hear thoughts, experiences, and idea on the following:

We are still in Waterdeep. Need to spy on a noble that may be involved or responsible for the mindflayer problem. Noble and his attendant live in a two story house surrounded by a 12' wall with a gate. A guard with two mastiffs patrols inside the gate. No trees next to the wall that arch into the property. We are not allowed to cast spells without getting in trouble so Suggestion is out. Basically, I take this as a spy/infiltrate mission.

After asking the DM a lot of questions, we discover there is a tavern across the street with a view of the grounds. The Galloping Minotaur. We decide half of us will hole up in the tavern and stakeout the place to watch for the guard's pattern, comings and goings, etc. The other half will go talk to Vincent at the Tiger's Eye for his thoughts.

Any experience with infiltrating a house with a patrol?

Divert the patrol...I just re-read and saw dogs...cats and raw meat over the wall..away from your entry point by paid street urchins...

Don't go in through the front door...

Good idea. The noble is a breeder of beasts. We have pets now. Magical panther and owl. Python and small dog. What about having a massive crate built with a false bottom? Panther goes in the crate and a few of us are hidden in the false bottom. We have it delivered to the noble from a merchant in Waterdeep that sells animals. Wait to be carried inside then jump our and Trojan Horse them?

The old gang is doing a Rolemaster campaign after 27 years. One 5-hour session a month for 4 months. Canada, USA, France.

Yes, I know I'm a filthy nerd.

It happened:

Raging Trog just dropped 136 dmg on a full attack (3 attacks) and pasted a stone golem...

Necromancer's undead horde got destroyed.. eh...they served their purpose...

I managed to not get fireballed again while alone in the hallway, but we still almost died. I get through and join the rest. Find our NPC paladin in a cell. Most of us are in single digits. We decide to cast Tiny Hut against the double door we haven't explored yet to block anything from coming in. Eventually it gets torn off the hinges. Mind Flayer and hobgobin chieftans. We try to negotiate for most of the session because we know we're screwed. DM warns us that if we fight one of our characters is probably going to die.

Our son ends up convincing the hobgoblin to turn on the Mind Flayer with some good role playing and rolls. We book it out of there. We all agree we're not going back into the sewers again. However, we heard the Mind Flayer doing something as we were running. I'm guessing he teleported away so we might see him again.

We make it back to the Fateless Fiddle for a long overdue rest. The next day we head to the market and start buying pets LOL. Our son buys a python. My wife had to skip this session so we got her a puppy to surprise her with next game. Hope it doesn't die LOL. I buy kittens to use as a prank on Vincent from the TIger's Eye next session.

Session ends.

Wow. Time flies since my last update. Work gets in the way of D&D updates sometimes. We've played every week since this last post. Still in Waterdeep, politicking, role playing, etc. Bought more pets. Our son has a python and magical panther. Wife has a puppy. I have a magical owl. DM says he doesn't let familiars die unless we use them to perform an action like spy or do something in combat. Otherwise, they're safe which I think is cool.

Last week we finally battled the Mind Flayer again, but this time in the house of a noble that was basically being held hostage. Our son fighter was down to about 24 hit points, stunned, and grappled. Mind Flayer initiatives some kind of brain eating attack. DM was just about to roll when I raised my hand quickly and said, "Bard can cast cutting words?!" He said yes. Our wife bard needed to roll a 3 or higher on her d8 to stop the attack. She rolled an 8.

DM said, "You just saved his life." The Mind Flayer would have hit for 65 damage and instantly killed our fighter. That would have been a whole other trek to try to restore him and our son probably would not have been happy.

We are nearing the end of our Waterdeep arc. We'll be collecting our reward for the Mind Flayer, I should get my soul back in my possession but getting it put back into my body is another story, then we'll have a showing at the coliseum before we head out to Triboar to continue the DM's home brew.

We haven’t had the chance to play in a while. Hoping to play in a week or 2.

on the plus side the next release from Loot Studios is Werewolves and the models look awesome. Gonna print and paint some when they come out in October, gotta prep for a Halloween session.

Hoping to play next weekend.
In addition prepping for our annual Halloween game.
Going to set them all up with a few choices of premade evil characters and have them run “The Haunt” from DMs guild.

Their options are going to be:
death cleric
necromancer
oath breaker paladin
ancestral guardian barbarian with ghost ancestors
witch
monster hunter
plague doctor that I’m going to need to decide a class for (probably a fighter or rogue)

I’m gonna run a Blood Hunter Lycan as their guide NPC.

Need to develop some good backstories for them all too. It will be fun for them to have a chance to play evil characters I think.

I have a bunch of awesome characters from Loot Studioa to use for them.

Lucked out and not only did I get my soul back, but put back into my body at the same time! No longer a zombie. Don't have to talk like a zombie anymore either which is nice. Also, got to level up. Multi-classed into cleric so now I'm a level 5 fighter battle master and level 1 cleric war domain. Pretty cool cantrips with Guidance, Resistance, Spare the Dying. Prepared spells are nice too like Bless, Healing Word, Sanctuary, Shield of Faith. Plus three bolts of inspiration per day (extra attack) due to my wisdom.

Group got a nice reward for the mind flayer. 5,400 gold and a few potions. Will be resting and having some downtime in the next session or so since I died and came back to life. Then a finale at the coliseum before leaving Waterdeep for more home brew in Triboar.

I hope this is the plan you went with. When I doubt always go with the plan that has the highest potential for shenanigans.

I think a plague doc fighter would be rad. His backstory could be all about what an awful doctor he was but they kept him around for his muscle and to handle the undead

Had a few new players join in the past couple weeks, all have RPG experience but not Pathfinder 1E, especially compared with my core group that's been playing together for 2 years in the same campaign now. Encounters are now slower. But nice to have more folks.

Dice Gods have a sick sense of humor as Trog tried to give the gift of mercy to a dying NPC and rolled two crits on a full attack...103 dmg on a dying individual (messy!) Then rolled shit in actual combat.

On the plus side the Necro has a pack of 1HD goals to use as fodder ..

Was fairly crestfallen after first One D&D playtest release. The second was exponentially more encouraging. Exciting stuff being tossed out as potential for next edition.

Hope everyone in this thread watches Viva La Dirt League's D&D campaign. It's the best one out there by far and it goes from strength to strength as the characters develop.
