One very obvious example of Donald Trump making an ass of himself, was his racist Birther lies, which were many years before he ran for president. "You wouldn't believe what my investigators are finding out in Hawaii! I'll release it when the time is right." I guess the time was never right, huh?

He took out an $85,000 ad (which is closer to $250,000 today) in 1989, calling for 5 kids - as young as 15 iirc - to be executed. Actually, it was multiple ads. He wanted the ad placed in every major NY paper. It contributed to the atmosphere that deprived these kids of a fair trial.

The case stunk and the kids were wrongfully convicted. Their convictions were eventually vacated in 02 and NYC paid them $41 million in 2014 to settle their civil rights lawsuit. Trump refused to apologize. In 2019 he said "You have people on both sides of that." The ad:
