you have to drain it every day for abt 2 weeks or figure out a way to keep it compressed after draining.

I just wanna say there are alot of guys being huge pussies about cauliflower ear. Get needles, drain. I have not heard or seen ONE CASE of someone getting an infection. Kurt Osiander has a video of him draining a kids ear ON THE MATS, they still have their gi's on and shit.

Wow. Because you haven't seen nor heard about an infection means it never has happened...

Not a good idea to listen to this guy. If your ear gets infected, it can be very BAD news. I'm not talking out of my ass; I am talking from professional experience.

Im not saying that it doesnt happen. Im saying that you are dramtically overstating the risk of infection as DIRECTLY related to draining cauli. If you do it right its no nearly as risky as you say. If it gets infected you will know within 12 hours, go to the fuckin doctor and get some super anti biotics and have a happy life. SHITLOADS of grapplers drain their ears this way. You are more at risk of getting staph...which is worse, and we knowingly expose ourselves to that, stop being wussies.

The first couple of times draining my ear was a little nerve wrecking. But after doing it daily and whenever my ear swells up, pretty simple. Just as long as you clean the area well, you should be good to go. I much rather spend a couple of bucks to drain my ear, than having to go to the doctor, especially if you don't have medical insurance.

If only I had wait for the ear to heal,. Instead I would keep training and here's what I ended up with.

Better than a massive hard lump....I guess. Competing year round doesn't give me much chance let my ears heal, oh well. Atleast I can look rugged now, 'sigh'

I'm just starting my first BJJ lessons in a week or two, and I'm dead scared of getting this.

I have let small stuff just go on with icing and taking some painkillers. I have had to have some cauliflower drained twice as it was worse then just a little kernel, but the doctors who did it both times were pretty top notch.

Seriously, if it is just a tiny little kernel, big deal. If it is big and bad, go get it done right.

thought i'd share my cauli story...

wednesday night i forgot my headgear, and it just so happens that very night was my first ever experience with a puffy, blood filled sac
not to say my ears looked great to begin with, from the start until now they've gotten abit bigger, but this was a pretty big blood sac on my ear
today i waited 6 hours to get it drained, only to have the doctor tell me she would not bolster it and i needed a plastic surgeon for that
now, it went from a normalish ear with a blood sac to a mangled up ear that appears to be refilling... it may just be swollen from after the draining, but it looks much worse and is covering a larger area than before...

has anyone had the same experience? is it just swollen from the draining, or is it just going to be worse?

Thats it this story freaked me out ! My left always gets red and swollen when I roll with the gi and little red spots and very painful I cant even lay down on my pillow, I always take my headgear off because it makes me hot but after this story I am wearing it everytime I roll!

I just want to chime in and say...

WHY ISN'T THIS STICKIED YET!!! Sticky is in the title and it has 60,000 views. What are the qualifications? lol

It is not a big deal!
Main things are clean and sterilized conditions and you can do at you home in a few minutes. I would recommended this by doing at home because you`ll probably need to repeat this a couple of days in the row.
You need: - new sterilized needles with the syringes
- some anti septic spray (alcohol could do but antiseptic spray is better)
- cotton wool
Just apply anti septic spray on ear and clean with cotton wool, teeth needle in the swollen par of ear and drain it. After that APPLY MORE ANTISEPTIC spray put some cotton wool and compress you ear with some bandage or something for at least 5 to 10 minutes. In some relatively clean home there is very little chance that it would get infected!

One trick is that you take shower or keep your ear in hot water just few minutes before you get drain and you pores on your skin will be opened and when you teeth needle you wont feel anything at all!

Dont know or can`t to post pictures..

My personal opinion on cauliflower ear is if you care about how your ears look wear headgear. My headgear only cost $30 and it works fine, although I'm sure there are more comfortable alternatives. After a week or so of BJJ my ears were getting tender so I bought headgear and have been wearing it ever since. If I get cauli at a competition I'll get it bolstered and take time off.
To everyone asking why it isn't stickied Zankou put it in the Grappling FAQ

I have cauli in my left that I've been draining over the past week. It's definitely shrank but there is still a little bit left. The problem is that its starting to harden up.. Should I attempt to drain one of the smaller pockets or just let it harden?

If you were able to get the cauli flat everytime you drained it, then the current pocket you have should still be fresh blood that refilled after your last drain...so you should still be able to drain it. you might need a bigger guage needle if it's starting to harden. The sooner the better.

where can you get syringes? doesnt the pharmacy keep them safe so junkies cant get needles?
