The current best submission defense master

Has to be Maia, Jones or Werdum. Benson Henderson gets an honorable mention for me, he was always very slippery.

I don't agree with people saying Volk, a sub defense master wouldn't get put in subs in the first place.
False. The more confident you are with your escapes the more you get caught in bad positions. Volk also got caught by a very high level black belt. And survived in a masterful way.

Not in a UFC title fight. I'm sure he'd rather have not had to work his way out of a tight triangle if given the option. There's a difference between a bad position and being in an actual sub. Compare it with Masvidal having Demian Maia on his back for a lot of time in their fight and being fine.

all time would be maia or werdum, i dont think i ever seen them get in someones submission attempt ever.current would be jon.
Maia has barely ever been in subs, and that's why I remember the rare occasion when someone had the balls. Jason MacDonald, who poured every ounce of his athleticism into his grappling, had a few nice sub attempts early on.

Maia and Werdum were not in sub attempts because no one wanted to go there with them. When you go for a sub there's always a higher chance for reversal. So it's risky. However they still might have the best sub defence, even if it was not tested.

I really wish we got to see Mir vs Werdum or Barnett vs Werdum. Those guys would have certainly tried. Barnett's a big strong catch wrestler too, those guys can be tough to deal with for BJJ specialists.

Wanderlei, Bendo, Jones, Fedor (Werdum is an exception)

I’m sure he didn’t mean to be there. But sub defence imo is the ability to get out or a submission no matter how deep it is.

submission avoidance is a different aspect of the game and also requires a level of reserve. The more offensive you are the more you open yourself to attack. The more likely you get caught.

having good defence allows more offence.
Considering that Volk escaped and won that round. And masvidal survived and lost a decision, goes to prove my point.

I think a better way to look at it would be which UFC fighter that's not an offensive submission specialist, but likes to grapple / scramble with the best of them, is the best defensive submission master?

Volk

There is some nuance, because you need to see someone who gets exposed to a lot of sub attempts to validate their mastery. A fighter who has elite TDD and has mostly fought striking might have crap sub defence but has never come close to being submitted.
Jorge Masvidal has a couple of early sub losses, but then went on for many years to fight several excellent grapplers and spent a lot of time being sub-attacked yet has not been subbed since. Fantastic sub defense.

Whereas Adesanya has also fought some excellent grapplers and hasn't suffered any sub losses but yet has spent almost no time in a sub defence aspect. I'd say Adesanya has better anti-wrestling, yet Jorge has better sub defense.
Rob couldn't do anything against Izzy when he was backpacking him

In term of crazy submission survival, William Gomis spent a full minute in a triangle armbar without tapping or going out.

Ciryl Gane. The way he defended the choke was masterful.
