Media The Crippler Makes UFC Judging Debut This Weekend

everybody seems to love the idea that pro fighters would make for great judges..

and yes they have ten times the knowledge any of the regular schmucks that judge has

but they have formed relationships with countless of ufc fighters throughout the years and since they are human and not robots that will make it hard to remain objective

I thin it will be tough if you have a friend / teammate fighting. You would know things like his dog died and his wife wants a divorce so you would be more inclined to throw rounds his way. Also since we can see scorecards going to the gym after judging could get a little dicey. I do hope it works out though

Nice to see some ex fighters given judges roles, will be interesting to see how he does

Gotta get a fight with Frank Trigg as the ref and Leben as a judge. Great seeing fighters finding lives inside the business.

I remember watching TUF live, I thought Leben was a clown with a chip on his shoulder, It wasn’t that I didn’t like him (that was Koscheck), however I never expected him to develop into the fighter he did… kudos to him for being persistent and having a successful career in the UFC, especially when being UFC level when that actually met you were on of the best in the world, IIRC his highest world MW ranking was top 15 (before UFC rankings), not bad.

I remember hearing that Chris was struggling with addiction after retirement and he reached out to DW for help to get his life in order. Good Samaritan Dana…lol, but in hindsight Dana was obviously empathetic and influential enough to have a positive impact on Leben. I’m happy Leben made the transition from savage fighter to normal working leigh-man in a respectable manner.

War Crippler

As a TUF 1 viewer, it's funny to see Chris Leben described as a competent person. Whether this says more about Leben as a man or MMA judging as an enterprise, I don't know, but good for Leben and I hope that this is the start of positive changes in judging.

Official Leben FTW.

Very true. But many of the current judges have the same relationships with fighters, trainers, camps, gyms, managers and promoters

Awesome he should be reffing soon too.

That is an issue with humans as a whole, so unless you're advocating for AI judging (SMART CAGE) I dunno how we fix that, fella.
I think its worse if the judge might know a particular fighter, maybe even been teamates or training partners.
