Television The Anime and Manga Thread: v45

Re-watched all the Baki stuff from the old 2001 anime, to the latest one on netflix.

Made me miss Kenichi for some reason.

Just read this, got a good lol out of the end of CH17. "Oh nooooo, you puuuushed meeeeeee......"
That shit was funny. I like how the mc aint no bitch lol. I'm liking this new wave of necromancer Manga if i had to say my favorite arch type of magic would be necromancer

Finished up The Great Pretender today. Man, that was a pretty good watch! I liked season 2 over season 1, but they tie in together so if anyone is going to watch this, be sure to watch from the beginning. I really did enjoy the storyline. The way season 2 ended, has me hoping for another season to get greenlit. All the characters were great though. I especially like the two main protagonists, Laurent and Makoto. Great stuff! I think my only gripe about the animation is how they decided to do like splash type coloring for a lot of the backgrounds. But ultimately, it didn't affect my viewing. This one isn't shonen, but I highly recommend it for you guys that are tired of the same shonen formula that gets recycled over and over again.

Don't forget that Demon Slayer as a Manga is completed. Finished. Done. They are likely trying to extend the Anime as long as they can to keep making money lol.

Demon Slayer is getting a sequel series to the Manga. The Anime pushed the Manga Sales for Demon Slayers to record breaking Numbers for a years sale absolutely crushing even One Piece so the Mangaka is probably capitalizing on that, because to be honest Demon Slayers story is pedestrian stuff.

The story isn't overall anything special. But neither is the story for One Piece, Bleach and thousands of other manga/animes out there. What made it popular was the animation and quality of the art.

The Demon Slayer movie was the highest grossing movie of 2020

How fucking crazy is that?

Anime was so good animation wise hence the raise in manga sales even if story is basic.

Actually, a chinese film called The Eight Hundred was the highest grosser of 2020 [LINK]. Demon Slayer was number two, which is still a shocking achievement. And probably a more impressive feat considering 99.7% of The Eight Hundered's take was from the chinese market and it made almost nothing in the rest of the world (and the reported number out of china is itself suspect).

I was just reading the other day it topped The Eight Hundred. I forget my source, but Wikipedia right now lists it as the top grossing film of 2020 (I don't know how accurate that is).

*shrug* Dunno, but I trust Box Office Mojo; they've specialized in this kind of reporting for over 20 years.

Was the animation of Demon Slayer that good? Its amazing, sure, but so is One Punch Man Season 1 or Jujutsu Kaisen. I honestly think its because its the most generic Shonen coupled with great character designs that lead to its success. Kid shows are what become the juggernauts.

Don't watch One Punch. But the animation destroys Jujutsu Kaisen and I really like Jujutsu Kaisen. Demon Slayer is flat out a better show than Jujutsu Kaisen too.
One thing is that the bad guys actually get killed in DS. You have like a 2 or 3 ep battle in JK and the bad guy gets away and doesn't kill any good guys either.

DS strength is its characters and animation. Which I think anime's greatest strength is its characters period. Not my favorite anime (nothing is beating Monogatari) but it is way up there as far as shoenen goes.

I went into the movie hating Rengoku (sp?) and thinking he was dumb looking as fuck. By the end of the movie I really liked that character. So ep1 s2 was nice to see some new footage of him.

PS not new to anime been watching since 79

PPS The 86 s2 is fucking really good too

Read a bunch of manga over the last few months. My thoughts

Slam Dunk- The characters were great and the games were fun to read as well, the final game between Shohoku and Sannoh in particular was a fucking masterpiece. It was also refreshing seeing Sakuragi grow as a player organically over time and not a guy who went from never touching a basketball into Michael Jordan in a few months, something plenty of series are guilty of making their MC’s super OP like that. My biggest complaints were the first 25-30 chapters were meh, and the ending felt abrupt but that was about it. Overall it definitely warrants the praise it gets. I haven’t read Takehiko Inoues other works but I’m aware of their reputation, definitely on the to do list. Excited for the movie next year! No clue what it’s about but Inoue is writing/directing it

Hinamatsuri- I loved this so much, funniest thing I’ve ever read. It consistently made me laugh throughout, but the character growth was good as well, lot of memorable characters in there. My single fav chapter if I had to pick was probably Hitomi learning English. Cannot recommend enough if someone is interested in a comedy/slice of life with a touch of supernatural powers involved

Sakamoto Days (caught up)- A relatively newer shonen jump title about a retired hitman who now runs a convenience store. Really enjoying this one so far, it’s a good balance between action and comedy/slice of life moments. It’s around 40 chapters give or take and i think it keeps getting better

Jagaaaaaan (read around 100 chapters so far)- Action/sci fi that reminds me a lot of Gantz or a more adult Parasyte. Total mixed bag. Some chapters are really good, some are awful, mostly depending on the characters involved. More main plot/MC/Mikazushi stuff and less weird incel/rapist side character arcs that are largely irrelevant to the story please. Art is very good. This manga is supposedly ending soon, I’ll finish it off when it all gets translated

A trail of blood/Blood on the tracks (mostly caught up)- A psychological thriller about a kid with a crazy overprotective manipulative mother. Reminds me a lot of the manhwa Bastard (which I really liked) because both series have that similar relationship dynamic and there is a lot of tension even if it’s a normal convo or nothing happens. I like the art style and it focuses a lot on facial expressions so you really get a sense on how the characters are feeling. I felt like there was a really good spot in the series to end but there’s been 30 chapters since, combined with it’s slower pacing I’m unsure on how or where it’s going to end up at this point

I wouldnt say JJK's animation is destroyed in anyway. Most casuals mistake art style, art and animation. They use the term 'animation' as a catch all. I would say JJK is about equal when it comes to the animation but the art style of DS is more unique with the use of colors being outstanding.

I personally enjoy JJK way more but I can see why people like DS. I would say bad guys get killed in JJK, same as with DS....its a shonen.

Watch One Punch Man, the first season is damn special.

unpopular opinion, but i think one punch man s2 was better than s1.

and on a related note, i think (unsurprisingly) most people seem to somehow miss the point of one punch man (satire re: OP protag ala superman/goku and the lack of plot/tension/dynamics via OP protag, hence saitama being bored already in s2).

i thought the plots of the hero org/cyborg wanting revenge on metal knight/etc were the actual compelling part. the dynamic with king (lolz @ the king enginge) in s2 was great.

but everyone hated it because it wasn't just some OP guy instakilling shit so i guess its future is uncertain.

Lol I felt the same way about Rengoku. I thought he was annoying AF going into the movie, but by the end I had a lot of respect for him. Season 2 has started better then I thought it would too.

I think you nailed it - the animation style of demon slayer really connects with people

then why the fuck is tree demon dude still the fuck alive? :p

"JJK's animation is destroyed in anyway. Most casuals mistake art style, art and animation."
^ well, I think it is just people don't know what words mean. DS destroys JK in all these.
I really do like JJK.

^ this is the best kill I have ever seen anywhere

^ and this

JJK does not have anything that matches this,

JJK does have some great humor and maybe the best bro ship eva!

As far as art style goes Monogatari is still the best

I heard that the first eps of s2 are the train arc...so ep1 is new, then i think they are chopping up the movie for 7 eps, then the rest

PS I still have fucking Zenitsu with a passion.... Shinobu is a top 3 waifu for me.
