The All-Encompassing Vitamin D Thread

from everything i've read it varies so greatly by person than aside from saying "for 60% of people 4000 I.U.s is enough" you won't really know what you personally need until you get the blood-work done.

MikeMartial: Now I may have missed this if it was mentioned earlier in the thread, but why did you order the kit yourself? Is this not something you can request your doctor to do? Is it not covered by insurance (the bloodwork)?

Actually, I hadn't thought about that but I have a physical coming up. Maybe I'll ask my doc if he'll run the test just for my curiosity.

I just asked my doc and she said she didn't want to order it until I checked with insurance, she said it would be expensive if it wasn't covered. Typically insurance will only cover something that is medically necessary and unfortunately they do not see us wanting to know what our 25OHD level is as necessary, even though it could help potentially avoid future medical claims.

I think some of that is on the doctor and their own ethics. Your doc doesn't want to say that she suspects vit D deficiency in you because she doesn't and that's what it would take for the insurance company to pay for it. Which I can 100% understand from a professional integrity standpoint and not wanting to contribute to rising insurance costs... BUT, I'm sure if she said that she suspects deficiency the insurance company would never question her. But who knows, I'm not a doctor and I don't work for an insurance company :icon_lol:

I fully agree with you ... I just think it's stupid more emphasis isn't put on preventative maintenance by insurance companies.

I just got my results from Grassrootshealth.com

68 ng/mL :D

I take 5000 IU's a day.

Got my results from Grassroots as well...
37 ng/ml at 4,000iu a day.

Upped it to 6,000/day, have to see where that puts me...

well... while that's interesting there are no real conclusions to draw from that study. it's not like the mice were supplementing with more or less Vit D and the ones who took more gained more body fat. And even if massive Vitamin D deficiency did mean that you could gain less body fat it's certainly not worth all sorts of declines in health/performance

So what's the deal with taking Vitamin D and drinking a ton of milk? Would that lead to too much calcium absorption?

I haven't read through this whole thread, so maybe it's in here.

I just asked that a few posts back .... MM referred back to post 181

Hypervitaminosis D is a state of vitamin D toxicity.

The recommended daily allowance is 400 IU per day. Overdose has been observed at 1925

Serum 25-Hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] Concentrations and Health*

ng/mL** Health status
<10-11 Associated with vitamin D deficiency, leading to rickets in infants and children and osteomalacia in adults

<10-15 Generally considered inadequate for bone and overall health in healthy individuals

≥15 Generally considered adequate for bone and overall health in healthy individuals

Consistently >200 Considered potentially toxic, leading to hypercalcemia and hyperphosphatemia, although human data are limited. In an animal model, concentrations ≤400 ng/mL demonstrated no toxicity

So based on that you are apparently safe until you start venturing into the 200 ng/mL range .

I just started taking a vitamin D supplement, but I have a few questions.

Firstoff, I am currently on synthroid for hypothyroidism. I usually wait four hours to take vitamins and other supplements as a precaution since some can interfere with the synthroid absorption. I would preferably like to take them in the morning instead of at lunch time.

Previously I was taking synthetic vitamins (crap) until a friend recommended a natural multi. I an now taking 'Nature's Plus - Source of Life' mini-tabs. The dosage is six of them. I also picked up a 'Solgar D3'. It's 1000 IU, but the curious thing is that it also contains 3000 IU of vitamin A. Why vitamin A is included in the D3 I'm not sure. The A in it comes from fish.

My concern is that one serving of the multi has 10,000 IU of A already (beta carotene) form. Since I want to take at least 4000 IU of D3 daily, I don't want to risk an overdose of A.

Are my suspicions correct or would it be safe given the above information?

I read on Dr. Davis' blog that you should keep magnesium and potassium levels pretty high when taking Vitamin D in order to prevent kidney stones.

I have been taking some d3 cause I am sick @ 10,000IUs so far for the last three days. I really don't feel like I am getting better. I am eating alot of healthy foods. Not saying D3 isn't great. I will take it anyway even if it doesn't aid the sickness. But damn I hope this situation gets better.
