It depends on the industry. I think that it would make your average office worker much better off, given that most of their days are spent on the Internet, searching for stuff to look at. For others, such as doctors and help desk personnel, I think that condensing their shifts wouldn't work as well as you might hope. For others, lengthening shifts and condensing the work week into 4 days would probably work better. I spend a fair amount of my work days in meetings, doing planning sessions, and such. My subordinates, while outstanding dudes, lose considerable chunks of productivity each day. Whether it be prepping equipment, movement to a training location, or putting everything away at the end of the day, a ton of time is lost to movement. If I was going to pick anything, I would opt for four 10-hour days any day of the week. I bet your average Verizon technician would likely agree. He could perform more calls and spend more time doing his job instead of getting to work early, getting his van packed, and then starting his route. I'm sure that people in this and similar industries would rather spend an extra two hours at work per day than having to repeat their daily routine every Friday.
