The 6 hr workday apparently works in Europe. Would it work in America?

Lol we would get even less done than we do now
Problem with the economy for me is the amount of part time jobs. Too many people don't break 6 hours, so i don't see how a 6 hour day would benefit

I was listening to something the other day talking about shorter work periods. They made a good point that if you are given a week to finish an assignment, that you will utilize that entire week to finish it regardless of whether you could do it in one day. They said it's been shown that if a worker is given less time on that same assignment they will still get it done.

If people would stay the fuck off their phones and quit worrying about socializing all day they would get a hell of a lot more done. I watch people run their mouths for a few hours a day sometimes. They just stand there talking, walking to another spot, and then talking some more. It fucking infuriates me.

What's their motivation to get more work done? Would it potentially lead to a raise or promotion at your workplace? Would they make more on commission? If they don't have a reason to focus more and socialize less, they're going to take the path of least resistance and coast through the day. Most people aren't going to go all out to make more money for the company if they don't get a piece of the increase.

In one scenario the motivation would be working less hours. The podcast I was listening to was about working shorter work weeks.

The other scenario where you still have to work 40 hours the motivation is not being a complete piece of shit mooching every bit of overtime possible and wasting tax dollars. And by working less overtime increasing the potential of getting a raise. But they don't think about big picture things like that. I work with a bunch of ignorant uneducated people.

Ideally I'd rather have that 24 hr shift 7 days a month. But the hose-monkeys seem to have a lock on that one. @Captain Davis

We Americans prob do 6 hours of actual work in the whole week

It depends on the industry. I think that it would make your average office worker much better off, given that most of their days are spent on the Internet, searching for stuff to look at. For others, such as doctors and help desk personnel, I think that condensing their shifts wouldn't work as well as you might hope. For others, lengthening shifts and condensing the work week into 4 days would probably work better. I spend a fair amount of my work days in meetings, doing planning sessions, and such. My subordinates, while outstanding dudes, lose considerable chunks of productivity each day. Whether it be prepping equipment, movement to a training location, or putting everything away at the end of the day, a ton of time is lost to movement. If I was going to pick anything, I would opt for four 10-hour days any day of the week. I bet your average Verizon technician would likely agree. He could perform more calls and spend more time doing his job instead of getting to work early, getting his van packed, and then starting his route. I'm sure that people in this and similar industries would rather spend an extra two hours at work per day than having to repeat their daily routine every Friday.

Of course a 6hr could work. The 8hr day is a matter of convention; there's nothing inherently magical about working specifically 8hrs in day, beyond that our society is more or less oriented to it atm. Unless we stagnate/regress in terms technology, at some point a shorter work day is inevitable.

Not to mention the fact that a many post-industrial nations, with comparable standards of living, already have things like 30-35hr workweeks, 8 weeks PTO, etc.

Why is " pro work grinding " a lifestyle to strive for .........honestly? You get one fucking go round on the planet , and I'd sure as he'll rather spend as much of it as possible doing shit I wanna do with people I wanna do it with than than the old hamster wheel routine. Do you think anyone regrets not working more when they are laying on their death bed?

It's seems to me that working is a means to an end...... not THE end , and if we were truly advancing as a species we'd be thinking of ways to do less of it.

Wow. great post!

Yeah I think that's the psychology behind why this works.

lol I'm the same way. See people hold a tool in their hand so it looks like they're doing something, but they'll just wander around and talk to people for like an hour. I can't stand that. Can't stand for people trying to shoot the shit with me either when I'm in the zone and focused on getting something done.

It boggles my mind hen I see people argue against having more time to enjoy life. Its as if they want to work themselves to death. I remember seeing an article saying that one of the most common regrets people have on their death bed is wishing they hadn't worked so hard in life and had spent more time enjoying life and spending it with family and loved ones.

Yeah that's the big picture but most people don't look at it like that often enough. Partially I think it's because ALL of us have this basic need to feel important and have a purpose. I've had months of time off before and after awhile that time off really starts to suck. It's like, remember summer vacation from high school? Those first few weeks are fucking awesome. But at the end of 3 months I know I was always so ready for school to start back. We all need to feel like we're accomplishing something or else what's the point? if that even makes sense.

I hear you. Im the type of person who would find something to do tho lol

24+ hour shifts suck. 16 hour days for over 2 weeks straight will destroy you, mentally and physically. Hallucinating isn't as fun when you've got shit to accomplish.

I work salary and I can tell you that I just pretty much work however long it takes to get my job done each day. I stay for five or six hours when I'm not that busy in a day.. but I'll work 9 or 10 hours if it warrants. I'm pretty fortunate that I don't usually work more than 45 hours a week at my job though.

I try to budget my time as much as possible so I don't have to work late. If I wasn't fucking around here so much, I'd probably be there even less time.

I work 8 hours the first 4 days this week. I finish the week with 12 hour the last 3 days.

Next week i have no work.

Its a five week cycle. Works great for me for training, ect.

The pay is also good.

@kirkstrickland

I also cannot and when I'm deep into some task and someone wants to come up and bullshit with me. I try to be as short as possible with them to get them to go away but they rarely get the point. Some of them will walk up to me doing something and go "Oh man you ain't gotta work that hard!"

I always reply that I'm actually trying to earn my paycheck.

It would work in America but companies would hate the idea. Most of them want to work employees as much as possible.
