The "35 Curse" for lower weight classes is horsesh*t

It's not bullshit. And it's not a 'curse' it's just a fact of biology lol of when men's bodies seriously start to deteriote, especially when fighting guys in their 20s.

That's why nobody else has done it.

He's just special.

Ehh not really. In order to be successful at the top of the lower weight classes at an advanced age you have to have a very very high fight IQ along with a very well rounded skillset to make up for the decline in athletic ability. Like Volk and DJ are very, very intelligent fighters so is Shev, so although they have lost a step athletically they can still find a way to beat their opponents because they are smarter and have more tools to work with. This is why fighters like them stick around longer and have a lot slower of a decline compared to fighters who heavily rely on athleticism, their chin or possess a limited skill set.

Had Volk fought the real champ Ilia, the trend would’ve continued. But he beat flavor of the month Diego Lopes for a vacant belt while running & clock watching and Sherbros are getting their panties wet.

eventually another fighter will a title at 36, then goal post will be 37 and so on. Seriously people on here just can’t fathom fighters being competitive & even winning a championship post 35. But by the looks of things it’s trending towards 33-37 as the cut of date of MMA fighters competitive prime. But yes, goal posts are moving because MMA seriously might be the worst fans of the sport that constantly will cast fighters aside after a loss and never give even their opponents the proper respect they deserve, instead they beat a washed fighters.
the goalpost won't shift, 35 is not a fixed rule with no exceptions. Fighters 35 and older lose significantly more title fights

as an earlier poster said, put money on every 35+ title challenger, see how well you do

-not aware of some finessed cherry picking on your post.

Who are you talking to? I wasn't "cherry picking" anything, all I did was post the current champs over 35 plus the ones about to turn 35, and title wins after they turned 35. These are all facts, not some manipulated stats.

Volk - 36
Val - 36
Weili -35
Juliana - 35

Pantoja - will be 35 in 2 days
Merab - will be 35 in January

Pantoja should be fighting again real soon now, all he needs is one more successful title defense.
We need to wait awhile for Merab though.

There's only 4 instances of a male defending or winning a title after 35 in the UFC. 2 of those instances are Woodley.

And honestly Volk looked like shit on Saturday even though he comfortably won.

It still holds true most of the time TS. Maybe fighters are getting more longevity oout of their bodiers these days with proper diet and training, but it has always been a trueism and the some of the examples you gave were folks not even 35 yet. C'mon dude...

and even if the goal posts did move, it's more likely an indication of advancements in training methods / technology than it is an indictment against the fact that athleticism decreases with age or that theres a conspiracy to smear fighters 35+

fighters 35+ tend to lose more title fights than win

Ranked UFC fighters are now older on average nowadays in pretty much every division, so there is definitly a trend there.

If you’re replying to me, maybe you missed my point. I didn’t say fighters at 35 will win title fights. I simply said, people cast fighters out once they lose after a long streak at 30+.Fighers like Adesanya, Volkanovski, even fighters who were just entering 30 like Holloway and Aldo were simply told to retire, wash, out of prime. Instead of just saying they lost to better fighters.

I didn’t say to put money on ever 35yr old plus challenger, but isn’t it something to be said that at LW the top ranked fighters are 33-37? Just because they can’t capture gold, it doesn’t mean they are washed and should retire. If fighters listened to every person who peddles that around then Volkanovski would have never captured gold against a legit contender, not some bum, yet a lot of people are claiming Diego is bum already.

The years go by, it’s trending towards fighters being competitive at later ages 33-37, it’s happening right before you folks but still somehow fans find a way to discredit the win and the opponents.

Where are all the prospects in their 20s?????

This is not good.

Nah, father time is undefeated. The odds are stacked against the aging. Volk may have come back from adversity but he won't ever be the same Volk from a few years prior. Not enough time or fights in the world to gain his confidence back

Historically this was true, but fighter longevity and career planning are better than they were 20 years ago so the number is going up. There is also less of an incentive to become a fighter these days with the cost of living and the fact that pay is pretty stagnant leads less people to take on fighting as a career, so the people near the top hang on for longer.
