TERMINATOR: DARK FATE v.2 (First Reactions)

Guillermo del Toro, of all people, comments on how some of Goyer's ideas wouldn't translate well to the screen -- which is why BLADE 3 is regarded as a crime against humanity. Goyer came to my attention having shared writing credits on DARK CITY. The other guys were Alex Proyas, whose project it was, and Lem Dobbs -- who wrote THE LIMEY, which is about as far from dark and phantasmagoric as you can get.

I’m starting to think the best thing for movie franchises to do, is create a trailer with no real info in it like the one for this movie.

Sit back and wait for the fan theories to come in on what they think happens and go with some of them, and then write the script and film the movie.

Because the fan theories seem way better than the actual movie Again. TLJ anyone?

The Terminator has been fucked so many times now it looks like Swiss cheese. It's got fifty new holes in it from Tim Miller's weiner.

At this point, James should just go full George Lucas and digitally put Dani Ramos' face over John Connor's in T2 and get Michael Biehn to say "Dani Ramos" in ADR so they can paste it over every instance of him saying "John Connor" in the first film.

It's the only way to be sure.

It could also be that The Terminator franchise just doesn't lend itself to much beyond the amazing first two films. They seemed to really tell an awesome story- open and shut, cut and dry. Any additional movie reminds me of the Jurassic Park sequels. They can throw in new innovations or new action setpieces but, fundamentally, they lose luster each time out because they have to keep convincing us audience members that the same general idea is going to continually be interesting. Relentless machine comes back to kill the savior. Judgment Day is inevitable. We get it. Dinosaurs run amok.

With JP series, it's even more problematic because they have to keep coming up with reasons why anyone would go back to the island or why the dinos wouldn't be militarily wiped out almost immediately after a catastrophe.

My point being I think there are some franchises that lend themselves to three, four, five plus movies and Terminator series might just not be one of them. They even tried to do one in the future timeline with Worthington, Bale and Bryce and it was dull as dirt.

Another thing that I think the new Terminator movies (including 3 which is like 15 years old at this point) don't get right that the original two really did was that the Terminators- Arnold in the first and Patrick in the second were really intimidating and outright frightening at times because they weren't just messes of CGI with shiny, new powers. When Arnold is walking through the police station causing absolute destruction and no one can stop him- that's an incredible sequence. When T1000 first starts sprinting after Sarah, John and Arnold that's amazing.

None of these post- T2 conceptions of the villains have come close.

The path was always clear to me. Two movies on the future war. In the first one, Skynet takes over and rounds up the humans and the resistance begins. In the second, the resistance wins the war and probably ends with Kyle Reese going into the time machine.

That story was always there, and would always have garnered interest.

You're entirely right that it's not compelling to have the same chase movie over and over again with a slightly different bad Terminator that has some derpy new ability. James Cameron's attention to detail and shot selection is largely what made the first two movies. Terminator 1 looks fantastic.

Terminator 3 was the most expensive movie ever made and it looks like a stupid piece of shit. I can't stand the way that movie is shot. It's like a $200M sitcom half the time.

Nobody wanted to see the Terminator in Elton John glasses.

They wanted to see the resistance escaping from the extermination camps, and being freaked the fuck out the first time a T-800 with realistic flesh shows up and fools them and annihilates a whole underground settlement, and learning that dogs can spot them... Jesus, it's all right there.

And instead we get talk to the hand and nexus points and John Connor becoming a nanoterminator and now no John Connor at all.

WTF.

Absolutely. Well said. That is certainly the route that they should have gone.

haha $200m sitcom. Some of the silliness in that film felt very out of place.

I also have to say that I find these reboots that think they're better than the previous crappy sequels and show it by saying, "pretend all the previous sequels didn't happen" are a bit pretentious and offputting.

Jurassic World did it. But watching it, I was like, is this really better than JPIII? Marginally, maybe. I don't think it's better than The Lost World.

I will say I enjoyed last year's Halloween reboot though which also did that erase all previous sequels conceit.

Not just the jokes, but the look and the shot selection. These were all SERIOUS scenes in Terminator 3, and they look like outtakes from Parker Lewis Can't Lose.

And WTF is this? This is 40 year old John Connor. He doesn't look 20 years older. He looks like a fucking burn victim.

This movie was so horrible that it pisses me off that it actually had a good twist ending of judgment day being inevitable. That ending needed to be attacked to a stronger film.
 
This really explains well what made Terminator great in the first place

 
I enjoyed it.
Good action, fast paced, and likeable characters.
None of them were the shit that people were expecting. All the chicks were cool, I dug the new terminator villain, and Hamilton and Schwarzenegger were great.
No T2, but I ain't mad at it.
