Teddy Atlas: Floyd didn't carry Conor

We'll leave it at that brother. Its 3am I need sleep.

I apologize if I was a little bit of a dick.

I get carried away with these long debates sometimes , lol
ha me too man..it was nice debating anyway! I was a dick also...

Who cares? The fight itself was a travesty and served only the financial interests of organizers and participants and was actually detrimental to both MMA and boxing.

Its' a very simple and straightforward breakdown by Teddy that makes sense. There are other reasons that other boxing people said why it took so long to take Conor out, but these are the main reasons. For a 0-0 fighter, Conor did very well in that fight. The expectations were also lower considering it was his first boxing fight, so his performance gets more praise then a guy who's been boxing a long time and has 20+ fights.
mayweather can make anyone look good in that ring if he wants to.

This kinda stuff is good practice

Still not sure for what yet tho.. lol

But it's a decent mental exercise at least, keeps you somewhat sharp.

Would've been risky if he attempted it as well. He was defending extraordinary well but was still getting tagged. Particularly when be started opening up. That's why you seen him in his shell for a certain period of time.

As always, Floyd plays it safe. You didnt see him really put his foot on the gas until Conor was truly gassed and then took him out.

At 40 years old and clearly a shell of yourself, being Floyd Mayweather of all people, you dont take risks. You fight smart, throw at the body, keep up the forward pressure and drag the fight into deeper waters where you can drown him.

Very logical and straight forward. Something which was obviously planned according to what you heard In his corner. Even Sugar Ray leonard suggested that's likely what his strategy was.

This isnt rocket science. People want to make up these fantastic narratives and do these absurd mental gymnastics but everyone fails to just use their head for a moment and think logically.

People just can't seem to wrap their head around the idea that Conor gave him any difficulty whatsoever. Regardless of who it comes from.
Yeah the best defensive boxer of all time is going to be upset by an MMA fighter. Floyd took it slow on him and disregarded his punching power. He walked forward way more than he does in other fights. He had no respect for Conor's power.

You want to suggest that Floyd didnt give a shit about getting hit and just allowed himself to get hit with punches in spite of defending beautifully for almost the entirety of the fight. He was not allowing himself to get hit with those jabs purposefully.
Nobody likes to get hit, even by weak punches But had Conor posed any threat, I can assure you Floyd would have been faster on his feet, not just walking forward with his hands up.

I think an over the hill Mayweather fought extremely cautiously against a much younger, larger opponent.

The whole game plan was to just walk down McGregor without opening himself to any risk and wait for him to inevitably gas.

It made McGregor look better than he is in a weird way, but I don't really think Mayweather "carried" him. Personally I think a lot of posters just say that to wind up the Conor fanatics.

What do you think, should I believe Shertards/Conor haters over Teddy?

I think there are a lot of boxing analysts who disagree with Teddy. The gif you posted looks legit but there are also clips of Floyd missing Conor's head as it doesn't move at all, and by a mile, as in hitting his shoulder. It's hard to believe those were shots he intended to land on Conor's head.

So I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. Floyd planned to go in there and carry Conor and thought that in the 6th round or so he'd take over and get him out of there in a round or two. I think that due to Conor's awkwardness, length, and size, Floyd didn't land as many body shots in the earlier rounds as he expected to and it meant that Conor lasted about 2 rounds longer than Floyd imagined he would.

Floyd said himself he planned on letting Conor punch himself out for 3 rounds, then investing in body shots and by the 6th or 7th he'd start taking over and get him out of there (I'm assuming by the 7th to 9th round). Instead it went into the 10th. So I do think Conor surprised him with his use of his length and his ability to slip here and there. But I also think that early on Floyd was intentionally missing shots (or simply not throwing any) to carry the fight longer "for the fans".

So I wouldn't say Teddy is 100% wrong. But Floyd hitting Conor's shoulder a few times when his head didn't move suggests he couldn't have really wanted to hit his head with those shots so there was at least SOME acting going on in there, even if all of it wasn't acting.

I can say with firm belief that if Manny vs conor happens Teddy will push hard to train conor - he is already an mma fan and see's a huge glaring level of skill in the majority of MMA guys boxing. As far as I know he doesn't train many boxers anymore so this would be his inroad to MMA/boxing trainer.

This hype will sell another mismatch that will make everyone involved money but will be a joke - like the floyd fight. And conor fans will eat it up and pay $$$ for the PPV - then if manny decides to go easy on conor say "conor is so good he lasted this many rounds with the two best fighters of their generation".

Teddy is a business man and this interview statement is politics. Floyd Mayweather most certainly carried McGregor. Watch his fight with Canelo and tell me Floyd couldn’t have finished that fight in the first round.

All you have to do is look at his punch counts through 5 rounds vs Conor, and compare to punch counts vs Canelo for example.

Floyd obviously carried him.

He averaged 5 a round for the first 5 rounds...

That's the lowest output of his entire career.

Of course he carried McGregor. It was his promotion and they were charging 100 bucks for the PPV. He had to make the fantastic fiction that Conor was a credible boxer look at least vaguely real for a few rounds.

Once Mayweather felt they got enough mileage on the story he started throwing and then it was over.

Floyd knew Conor would get tired later in the fight, and he was right. I dont think that strategy is the same thing as "Carrying". Could he have shut down Conor much earlier? Most likely. But he knew his odds of winning later in the fight were almost 100% compared to over engaging with Conor in the first few rounds when he was most dangerous. Why take a 95% chance of winning when you can take 100%? Floyd isnt risking that -0 on his record for anything.

not going to say Floyd could've ended him in the 1st but Floyd did pick the round lol

Ok teddy, and my eyes which I trust more than your analysis/judgement saw that floyd absolutely carried that boy.

I love all the sherbro's trying to act like they know more than Teddy Atlas about boxing! Bunch of damn morons. We get it you hate Conor...

Yes.

Floyd fought like Floyd always fights. Safe, defensive, counter punching. Conor is much bigger and longer, and likely much better than Floyd realized. After Conor started to gas Floyd took over, but that doesn’t negate some of the clean shots Conor landed in the first few rounds. Very few fighters have landed as clean on Floyd as Conor did, even if it seemed to have little effect. Watching him slip and rip Mayweather in rd. 1 was surreal.

Simple as that.

Floyd didnt even train for the fight. He knew Connor was no threat thats why he et him last that long

Floyd was even filmed a couple of days before the "fight" eating some cheeseburgers. Conor was never and will never be a threat to Floyd in a boxing bout.

I don´t know what to do with Teddy. He clearly know A FUCKING LOT about boxing, has been a good coach, but he was always inclined to deliver industrial amounts of BS. Maybe he is trying to carve a business niche for himself in the MMA environment,
