It's not the worst game in the world and there are many people who like it, but I think as a sequel it sucked.

1. No little Mac or Doc - this was the biggest glaring omission to me. Nintendo owned the characters and people loved them so there was no reason to switch to some generic boxer as the main guy. I loved seeing little Mac fight dudes so much bigger that he has to literally jump to hit them in the face.

2. The game was designed to look and feel more like the old arcade punch out than the NES game. That was a stupid decision. The arcade game was ok but the NES game is one of the most beloved games of all time. Why remove all the charm and personality and take it back to the more generic feeling of the arcade game?

3. The music sucked.

4. There's something else, I can't put my finger on it but for some reason it's just missing some "fun" factor. To this day I can play the NES version and have a blast but the SNES game i never even bothered to beat it. Not because it was too hard but I just got bored of it.

I actually really liked it.

I dont know why they left little mac or Doc out, I agree with you that whole dynamic had alot of personality and was lost in this one.

But I liked the look of the game, and the sound of the punches. It's DIFFERENT than the vibe of the first game, and it's even not as good in some aspects.

But it's fun and I loved it.

I like it well enough, but there is something a little off about it, that made it feel like a decent copy cat, but not a true sequel. Just doesn't have the same charm.

Nick Bruiser was a cool final boss

While I don't think it was a bad game at all i agree thr absence of Doc and Mac was disappointing. Having said that it had some amazing characters.

What i love is Punch Out for the Wii. Really overlooked, and the characters and voice acting is so delightful. The fight with Aaron Ryan always has me laughing hard

There's a reason nobody really talks about it or the other clones except in this context (what a disappointment it was, or how it's slightly underrated due to the shitshow everyone has written it off to be).

Every time I try to play any of them I get bored after less than 10min. The original just works for some reason that nobody seems to understand.

I dont remember any negative backlash to Super Punch Out. It was well recieved when it came out, not a dissapointment at all, and it still has it's diehard fans who try to speedrun it to this day.

Mike Tyson in the prime of his career actually bein in the original game has attached a legendary status to it. That and the absolute banging music. The core mechanics are the same.

You're missing the point. I could forward the same defense of Mass Effect 3.

People always groan when it's brought up. The same as with ME3. I personally loved ME3, the combat was so much more polished than even ME2, it was more challenging, the level design was still pretty strong, and I didn't mind the narrative choices as much as others. It was highly reviewed too. It even stands at #234 in the Acclaimed Games canon.

Would you really say there was no "backlash" to ME3 at the time of its release, or even in modern conversations when the game is brought up? Because you'd be wrong. It's a matter of relative perception.

Never seen that happen.

Cant comment on ME3, never played it and didnt pay attention to what people said about it.

Super Punch out was considered a good game when it came out in the 90s and its considered a good game now.

All agree that the original game is held in higher regard, but that doesnt automatically make SPO suck to fit some people's hipster nowadays narrative

I don't know if I'd put "Super Punch Out" in that category. Don't know if it's better or worse, but ME3 is only really criticized for one part of the game(and some bullshit Day 1 DLC crap, that doesn't matter anymore), and the criticism was amplified by social media. SPO wasn't really hated for any one thing. It was always considered a damn good game, that just felt a little different. More akin to a quirky, but not hated sequel, a bit like SMB2.

Inferior music and no Rocky style running after winning each circuit, the only thing Super had on the original was the ability to save.

Never affected me though I still remember 007 373 5963 lol.

I have more thoughts on this, so I will return later. But I just wanted to say that Punch-Out on Wii is basically the perfect sequel. Nintendo loves re-releasing their titles. Don't leave this amazing game stuck on the Wii.

I don't think it sold very well, so I doubt we'll be getting another one anytime soon, or even a remaster. It was absolutely perfect, though.
