SUMO - 2020 "Nagoya" Basho (July 19th - August 2nd)

Bout of the day imo Mitakeumis Uwatenage. Great win for him.

sucks to see Asanoyama drop one, but that was great from Mitakeumi.

lots of odd tachiai on day 10. i don't like Kotoshogiku's new style, keeping his hips really high and his knees quite straight when he puts his fist down, dropping his hips when the tachiai has already started instead of starting off with his hips low and blasting up into his opponent. i've only noticed him doing that this tournament and i think it takes away so much power.

i also thought Yutakayama/Takarafuji should have been a rematch.

Imo there is something wrong in general with Sumo and video review. They have a clear picture of what is happening in slow mo and decide the other way time and time again. Just rewatched Toshinoshin May 2019 fight vs. Asanoyama. Or today again Takakeisho. Also a straight robbery. Either they are blind or these are political decisions. Bad outlook for the referees.

Aside from the bad refferees its a fantastic basho. Terunofujo winning the Yusho would be the greatest comeback I can remember.

yeah i think if anything the video replay might have helped in the Takakeisho match, but even then i think they would have given it to him with the no-good dead body rule.

Terunofuji vs. Tochinoshin was a great power vs. power match.

glad to see Kotoeko get his kachikoshi and Enho get another nice win.

but Daieisho's upset over Hakuho was the result of the day. opens up the championship race, and things are looking real good coming into the final few days.

Daieisho doing it for everyone, Terunofuji yusho is coming

Hakuho left side problems yeah? Slipped yesterday and today, was reeeaaalll ginger getting back to the Dohyo

wowow, Mitakeumi putting dirt on the big names this tournament. hopefully Hakuho's not out of the tournament.

Asanoyama vs. Terunofuji tomorrow... getting really hyped for that.

ideal scenario is Terunofuji loses to Asanoyama tomorrow, Asanoyama loses to Hakuho, Terunofuji wins the three-way playoff on the final day. but that's pretty greedy and i'll also accept Terunofuji winning from here on out and getting the championship.

Nor sure if it's just me....I thought chiyotairyu got swept over the sagari shimanoumi dropped on the ground as he stepped forward with hard kaina-oshi force.

An experienced gyoji would have paid attention to the detached sagari and picked up and removed it from the center of dohyo so nobody would step on it and lose the balance.

Bummer that Hakuho is out but the way he has looked the last 2 days I don't think he'd be a factor in the yusho race anyways.

A lot of fun stuff today, can't wait for Asanoyama vs Terunofuji

Do you guys really think Hakuho is injured that much? I got the impression that the losses pissed him of very much and did not quite fit into how he wanted to present himself.
Honestly I thought he wouldnt show up today no matter the injury if only to avoid a third loss.

The fall could very well have injured his foot so I dont rule it out. He is just the nr.1 fighter were I assume something like that.

I do hope Mitakeumi makes Ozeki this year. Like his style very much.

He had a significant limp. It's not like he had lost the basho either, he was 10-2 and both his losses were very close bouts.

And agreed on Mitakeumi. Takakeisho won the battle of the butterballs faster, but I always hoped Mita would catch up to him.

the big man, he's making up for lost time and coming for that title.

good to see Tochinoshin get his winning record, and Terutsuyoshi with some nice power sumo too.

Terunofuji!

Hopefully he can stay healthy and get back to Ozeki

Man I can't believe it. Terunofuji was my favorite rikishi, watching him win his first yusho was one of my favorite moments watching sports.

I had missed about a year or so before I got my girlfriend in to the sport and now she's a mega fan, sadly he was gone by then and she never got a chance to see him. So I told her a lot of stories about how great he was and why he was my favorite.

I couldn't believe it when she told me he was set to compete in this basho, I had made a joke around day 3 to her that he was going to win the whole thing. To be honest I was just happy to see him back and pick up any wins at all. I'm somehow shocked and not surprised at all that he may pull this off. Dude is a legend and I'm damn proud of him.

Speaking of comebacks, Ura finished 6-1 with a fun okurihikiotoshi yesterday. Another strong showing in September and he could be Juryo bound by the end of the year

What a great basho.

The fights for last day are perfect.
Terunofuji winning vs. Mitakeumi would give the perfect credibility to his fantastic basho. Loosing makes it even more interesting. Honestly I do hope for Mitakeumi to win and then have the 3 leaders fight it out with Mitakeumi or Shodai to win the basho

Endos also had a good comeback from his intial losses. Great win for him today and will be interesting if he can get kachikoshi vs Tokushoryu.

Ikioi always surprises me how he can manage to stay in makuuchi. Has to be the least skilled rikishi.
