SUMO - 2020 "Nagoya" Basho (July 19th - August 2nd)

Hoshoryu is getting it rough down in Juryo so far. Was hoping we could see his Makuuchi debut by the end of the year but it's not going to happen if he doesn't turn things around

yeah, i wasn't really expecting him to blow through Juryo in a couple tournaments, but he's having more trouble than i expected. this tournament has just started so it's not that he's doing really poorly, and a couple 8-7's is good, but yeah i was also hoping for a top division debut soon.

good to see mountain of a man Ichinojo with a good start to his tournament down dere.

Is this kotonowaka's first tournament? He looks very impressive. if only I could bet on sumo. He's getting 8 wins guaranteed.

this is his second top division tournament but he and Kotoshoho have been looking fantastic so far.

another nice win for Terunofuji, and Asanoyama still looking very, very solid.

Terunofuji yusho needs to happen, it would be the best thing to happen this year

I hope Takakeisho just had a slight hiccup today. He's my favourite and I always get worried over his bouts

yeah, Okinoumi is a weird guy in that he can look pretty hopeless some days, but then the next day he completely nullifies Takakeisho's pushing attack and knocks him off his feet with a well-timed thrust.

hoshoryu picked up another win today with a excellent kotenage. kiribayama having a rough start at M3 as i expected, hopefully he gets it together soon.

another good day for Terunofuji and Asanoyama.

and Hoshoryu's kotenage was sick:

What a kotenage.

Hoshoryu failed to grab uwate and it led him to use overhook en route to alternative throw that perfectly worked.

Reminds me of shohei Ohno's uchimata, head to floor application to generate greater leverage.

This pandemic will make everyone crazy... How many incredible fights we have lost...

I know next to nothing about sumo but I'm amazed there aren't more injuries from falling off the platform. Every time I've seen an Ippon style throw, both guys usually land with control and then just roll off the edge in a relaxed manner. Unless you're fighting in the Bloodsport Kumite or the Yamma, you have a flat surface for ring-outs.

Fight of day 5 imo Kiribayama vs Asanoyama. Kiri really gave everything to stay in. Impressive from both.

With Kotoyuuki I got the impression he again didnt touch the ground. Looks like a deliberate cheating now.
Dont like it, but maybe he did touch in super slowmo.

Myugiryuu is fantastic to watch. His fast pivots and power shifts. Great fighter right now may favourite to watch at this basho and looks like he lost nothing with the years.

Sadly Shouhouzan looks finished. One of my favourite fighters in recent years and Chiyomaru also looks like he will go down.

yeah, that was a great match. Kiribayama had Asanoyama in a lot of trouble, but it was great to see Asanoyama in his first tournament at a big new rank remaining calm and patient to get the win.

shame to see Terunofuji drop one, but Takayasu did a great job of keeping him off the belt.

Really weird one between Enho and Hokutofuji. Rough basho so far for the smaller guys.

Takakeisho got away with it today but I agree with the commentator that he should be plowing through most guys instead of trying to get slap downs all the time

Ok I need some advice. Does Kotoyuuki make contact with the ground or not at the start?

It again looks like he doesnt

yeah, if he does touch it's very light. even when the tachiai is a good one (like the ones today and yesterday) gyoji will call them back for not touching down.

Kiribayama with great movement against Takakeisho.

Asanoyama and Mitakeumi both looking very good.

Nice stuff from Enho

Hoshoryu looks like he shook off the rust or whatever it was and is looking much better. Also in the lower divisions Ura is already 3-0, hopefully he finishes with 5 or more wins and is near the top of Makushita in September.
