SUICIDE SQUAD Breaks August Opening Record with $135M But Drops Sharply Saturday

David Ayer's Suicide Squad may have opened to an August-best $135.1 million at the North American box office, but bad reviews and so-so audience reaction are already taking their toll.

After pulling in an impressive $65.1 million on Friday, it looked like the Warner Bros.' tentpole, playing in 4,255 theaters, would debut to $145 million-$150 million. But traffic slowed dramatically throughout Saturday, or 41 percent day-over-day, a far steeper drop than other successful superhero movies (The Dark Knight also dropped 41 percent, but the movie was impacted by the Aurora shooting.)

Overseas, Suicide Squad amassed $132 million in its debut in 57 markets, the second-best showing for a DC superhero title after Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice ($256.5 million) and the biggest August launch of any film. That puts Suicide Squad's global bow at $267.1 million. (Dawn of Justice had the advantage of opening day-and-date in China, where Suicide Squad won't get a berth).

It can't be denied that Suicide Squad posted one of the best openings of the year to date — thank a savvy marketing campaign, including a high-profile stop at Comic-Con — as well as wrestling the August crown from Marvel and Disney's likewise offbeat superhero film,Guardians of the Galaxy, which debuted to a surprise $94.3 million in 2014 on its way to earning better-than-expected $773.3 million globally, including $333.2 million domestically.

The big question heading into the weekend was whether the latest film in Warner Bros.' growing DC Extended Universe could beat another irreverent superhero offering: Fox and Marvel's Deadpool, which posted a three-day debut of $134.2 million over Valentine's Day/Presidents Day weekend in February, a record for an R-rated film. Deadpool's four-day holiday gross was $152.2 million on its way to grossing $773.3 million globally.

Suicide Squad — boasting a friendlier PG-13 rating — has been ravaged by critics and currently suffers a 26 percent rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes. That's one point behind the 27 percent rating for fellow DCEU title Batman v. Superman, which debuted to a hefty $166.7 million in March, but fell off more quickly than expected in the following weeks.

Now, Suicide Squad's ultimate playability is also in question after receiving a B+ CinemaScore from North American audiences. While it's better than the B awarded to Dawn of Justice, movies have much better legs when receiving some variation of an A score.

Box Office: 'Suicide Squad' Opens to Big $135M But Drops Sharply Saturday; Earns $132M Internationally

I'm guessing $51 million on second weekend.

Edit: On second thought, make that $47 million.

Couldn't possibly be because half the country had a severe weather alert last night?

Don't listen to the critics. This was an enjoyable, well-done comic book film. It was far stronger than Batman vs. Superman.

Status report, @JBSchroeds?

Predictions for the second week?
The mean drop for a second weekend for comicbook films is a -58.5% with a STDev of 6.87%. This means 95% of the results should fall between -72.0% and -45.0%. With the $135mil opening that gives a range of weekend two of $37.8mil to $74.3mil and a median performance being $54.8mil.

I'll personally predict that it splits the difference between MoS and BvS's performances and ends up with a $44.8mil second weekend.

Suicide Squad

I literally watched zero trailers for this movie because I truly wanted to have zero expectations going in. Truth be told, I did see the Joker make up and progression early on and though I liked the look Jared sported, the tattoos were puzzling and looked forced to me and would eventually foreshadow my overall feelings for this movie.

The character build up was so frenetic and chaotic that there was actually not really any character build up, save for Harley and mostly Dead Shot. It was almost like watching a video game cut scene where you get a very brief glimpse of the character before the game resumes.

The Joker & Harley scenes we did see (apparently a lot was cut out) had serious potential and I think a movie with them as the main antagonists vs. Batman would have been a better movie to make, however since all their interactions were flashbacks and randomly thrown in throughout the buildup of act 1 and 2, I think they screwed the pooch by shoe horning this into this movie. I believe the Joker would have been better off left out of this movie and only referred to when introducing Harley. That relationship and her motives were simply too complex to describe by way of flashbacks. The scene with Common's character was probably the most wtf scene in the entire movie next to the helicopter scene (and the Croc scene underwater). Robbie was hot as Quinn but her accent was all over the place and her one-liners mostly fell flat for me.

Deadshot was played well and consistent by Will Smith. Yeah, he Will Smithed a bit here and there but overall his character and his motives had the most depth. To me, Will was the standout for this movie and the scene with him being 'tested' at the gun range, while making no sense, was still pretty cool. Jai Courtney also surprised with a consistent character as Boomerang, though we literally know nothing about him and frankly his weapons were lame. Viola Davis was a solid Amanda Waller but again, another wtf scene at the end of the 3rd act. Diablo had LOTS of potential to be the best character in the movie but all the good work as well as the very cool pyotechnic CGI shown in act 1 & 2 was ruined in act 3 when he suddenly decided he loved his new family.

Slipnot, Croc, who was very hard to understand, Samurai Jack-et, Clint Eastwood Jr., all needed not to be in this movie. They felt shoe horned in and unnecessary. Flagg and the Witch's relationship felt shoe horned in. The other super hero cameos were shoe horned in. Who the hell shoe horned Carla Delevigne into this movie?

I could shoe horn a lot more things to say about this movie, but I'm getting angry thinking about it.

Shoehorned Squad.

4/10

Watched this and Lights Out last night at the drive in. Thought both were weak

I liked Leto's Joker, wish he was in the movie more. The witch and her brother stuff was cool for a second then it got super lame.

BONUS DATA TIME!
We can now make some wild speculations on the final domestic total.

The critic prediction thingy I posted a little ways back in post #868 gives a domestic estimate of $320mil.
A fully median performance the rest of the way gives a total of $343.5mil.
The 95% upper and lower bounds put it at $251mil to $511mil.
If it matches BvS's performance it'll get $268.7mil.
If it matches GL's performance it'll get $296mil.
If it matches MoS's performance it'll get $315.5mil.
If it matches GotG's performance (ha! yeah, right) it'll get $476.4mil.

Which of these outcomes is most likely? Well, it's extremely hard to know for sure at this point; we're working off some pretty limited data points. We know that the critics hated it and audiences seem to think it's decent-but-not-amazing. We know that it had a tough drop on Saturday after a really big Friday. We know it didn't match many of the estimates which were in the $140-150mil range. So, with these factors combined, I personally believe it'll end up at about the $290mil mark.
