Stronger Division? Welterweight or Lightweight debate.

Both divisions are deep with talent. However, Welterweight stands out more to me in terms of top end depth. I know a few posters have thrown out names but when you have fighters like Dong Hyun Kim (7-2) and John Hathaway (7-1) not cracking your TOP 20 you know you are loaded.

GSP is just an amazing fighter that you appreciate more with how competitive this division is without him.

WW and its not even close. When you got guys like Alves, Penn, Pierce and Rory out of the top 10 that means thats one heck of a stacked division.

Definitely lightweight...there's a logjam of talent at the top...

LW has the logjam, but in terms of Depth its WW fo'sho

Once Nate beats Bendo, there arent any new matchups for him (bar pettis) whereas there are soooo many matchups available in WW.

Lets just hope Dana/GSP/AS say no to a superfight and let Hendricks bang!

No matchups past Pettis? How about:

Bendo rematch
Maynard
Cerrone rematch
Varner
Dos Anjos looks solid
Tavares could be a top contender with another win
Alvarez if he makes it over (which he probably will soon)

There are tons of solid matchups later on down the road.

Are we saying which division could have the most champs? Well then LW because GSP is heads above everyone at WW.

Are we talking about most talent? WW.

GSP has cleaned out the division around 3 times now...and yet still people believe he's going to lose to the next up and coming contender. There's always a top contender at WW.

Who knows how LW would look in a couple years if Bendo dominated for the next couple of years. I doubt it could keep churning out number 1 contenders.

It's kind of unfair to compare them now isn't it? With all these new guys coming up in the WW division, there hasn't been a chance to let the dust settle yet.

No matchups past Pettis? How about:

Bendo rematch - Please no rematches!!!!!
Maynard - Beat him years back, and would again. Plus Maynards few fights away
Cerrone rematch - Corrone was schooled and frankly is a good few fights away now.

The above are close to contention, altho due to all the Logjamming its not ideal, as i think Cerrone/Maynard should fight soon.

As for the rest

Dos Anjos looks solid
Tavares could be a top contender with another win
Alvarez if he makes it over (which he probably will soon)

None of them are close at all, and to get somewhere close, they would eliminate one another.

Whereas with WW, i think there are soooo many fighters that can be matched that COULD be a #1 contender fight due to ability and not depth.

As i said before, WW has strength in depth

LW, but it's close both are great weight classes.

Their UFC divisions are pretty close (WW might even have the slight edge), but if you add all the top LW's outside of the UFC it's really not even close.

The past year has been hard for LW. LW lost Frankie, Guida, Lentz, and Olivera.

I think now, they are about equal.

Neither Lentz or Olivera were near the top 20 though. LW has been falling for a while.

LW, but i think WW has caught up and its closer than a lot of people are saying.

Edgar and BJ, possibly the two best LWs, are somewhere else.

If the average American got ripped and cut weight they would be about 160, so in an american context LW would have a slightly larger talent pool and therefore probably a more skilled one.

Whats true in theory however isnt always true in practice.

Gotta go with Welterweight. Some great fighters at the top and a lot of young talent working their way up the ladder.
