Strength in Interesting Places

Congrats on hitting those goals. It's always a satisfying feeling to be able to tick things off the ol' to do list.

I'm not quite there yet. I could probably go downstairs right now and hit the 122.5kg squat and could definitely hit the 142.5kg DL, but until I do, they are not done. Plus I should really lose that extra kilo. But it is within reach- close enough to touch.

Edit- top of page (for me, anyway). Here's some sporty/fit women, since I know a lot of SiIP readers like that sort of thing:

Thumbs up on the chicks, oh yeah and I guess reaching goals is cool too. Now you have "advanced" aka "jakt" to strive for

I believe, having done that rodeo, mentioning your progress is all on deployment makes it even more impressive. Quality shit good sir.
Nowwww go smash those goals. All in a sitting. Then add 10kg :)

Great lifting! It's always nice to reflect back on goals and see how far you've come.

Looking forward to a whole (30 posts) page of teh hawties*!

*Preferrably of the legal and female variety. But not mandatory.

I will do any day now... the extra 10kg might be do-able as well, we'll see.

I can't take too much credit for lifting while I am deployed... In Kabul, I live in a pretty comfy guest house which usually has 6-8 other people in it. It has its own gym, with two barbells, bench, squat rack (which they bought specifically for me), over 180kg of plates, a dip and chin station, a heavy bag (a recent addition), some other bits and pieces, and quite a few cardio machines. It's downstairs from me- about 15 seconds from my room. And although I work 6 days a week, I am usually home by about 5pm so there is plenty of time to workout. Being away from my family, I have no distractions. In some ways, it's more impressive that I keep lifting when I am at home in Thailand, as the gym is further away from home and there are a lot more distractions.

But thanks for the encouragement!

Advanced/jakt may take me years to reach. For whatever reason, progress for me is *very* slow- basically taken me 11 months to reach my current level, which plenty of people reach in just 1-2 months. But of course I will still try.

I wonder what would happen if I actually did Smolov 100% Amazingness McAwesomeville 2000+? Would I get through? What would happen to my 1RM? More importantly, what would happen to the two most important measures of physical performance levels, my FUAD and UUAD (Flexed Upper Arm Diameter and Unflexed Upper Arm Diameter)?

For reference:

Smolov 100% Amazingness McAwesomeville 2000++

In the first week, identify your starting 1RM. Then do the following bicep curls:

Monday: 5 sets of 12 @ 55% of starting 1 RM
Tuesday: 7 sets of 8 @ 65% of starting 1 RM
Thursday: 9 sets of 5 @ 75% of starting 1 RM
Friday: 10 sets of 3 @ 85% of starting 1 RM

Do 3x10 dumbbell or cable tricep extensions and 3x10 light face pulls after your bicep curls each day. Try to avoid doing any other exercises while running this programme, especially less important curl assistance exercises like squat and deadlift.

In the second week, add 5-10lbs to what you lifted on the corresponding day of week one, and in the third week, add another 5-10lbs.

You should pick on type of curl- e.g dumbbell, barbell, EZ curl and stick to it for the whole programme. But obviously, you should repeat the programme regularly, doing a different type of curl each time.

The article makes it sound as though none of the people that were killed or injured were British, which is a great sign for Jaunty's well-being. Still, what a tragedy that this happened at all. Why anyone would want to attack a council who "focuses on aiding foreign nations with education and building civil society" is beyond me. Very sad.

Thanks for the concern, guys. I was indeed safe.

It seems that there while were some foreigners staying there, but they got to their safe room in time. Of the 10 who were killed, it was 9 Afghan police and 1 soldier from New Zealand- apparently some NATO troops came to pitch in.

It seems that over the past couple of years they are far more concerned with killing their own than the occupying force.
I look forward to everyone getting the hell out of there.

In this case I heard that the motivation for the attack was the anniversary of the end of British rule in Afghanistan. But I agree with you that I look forward to bringing as much of our military home as soon as possible.

It is not expressly written out in the 5/3/1 e-book, nor is it in SS, but I think it's implied that getting blown to smithereens is just terrible for muscle growth. So don't do that!

Also, being kidnapped, taken to the tribal areas of Pakistan and being chained to a metal bar can interfere with a proper strength programme. Unless the metal bar they chain you to happens to be part of a Power Rack. And you have access to a bar, plates, etc. Even then, I gather that the nutrition in those circumstances isn't best for muscle growth and recovery.
