* Stipe refusing to fight until contract is re-negotiated !

Sports are not like that though
Yankees, Cowboys, etc are by far the highest paid teams & have been nowhere near the best
Best players don't make the best money
And that's what's wrong with it. And they're not going to fix it until they have a Union. Or maybe the belt holders will unite. But then the UFC would just move on, strip their belts and hand them to the next guy. There are plenty of fighters out there willing to be Dana's bitch. Guys like Conor, Khabib, Tony, Demetrius, Jon Jones, Stipe, the Diaz brothers are not among those. Cerrone, Bisping, DC on the other hand...

He is getting more since he was champ
After the Overeem fight he got more for JDS, he told Ariel that.
He has has two contractual bumps in pay since he won the belt from Werdum
He just doesn't feel they were enough now because both JDS & Reem had a higher guarantee then him
So looking back, he now wants more going forward.

Ah, thanks for the added info, now I'm starting to understand why so many aren't in favor for this tantrum.

And that's what's wrong with it. And they're not going to fix it until they have a Union.

MLB & NFL have unions & the champs don't make the most
That is not a definitive reality
A union won't even push for that as much as they would push for revenue sharing.
MBL, NHL, NBA, MLB, none of the major sports with unions work that way.

\Crashing out - have a good one

You got it

I'm a big Stipe fan, so I hope he gets more.
But I just wanted to be factual since he was pretty happy before the JDS fight with his new contract.

Only thing I can think of, is maybe he thought he would be a big PPV draw & make money that way, but it only did 300k.

When Stipe produces the profit like the other names than he should be asking for more money.

IMO it's the fighters job to fight and the promoters job to promote. If the UFC can't promote a HW champion that knocks out contenders left and right, is about to set a record and is a paramedic/firefighter - a hometown hero as well, guess whose fault it is?

If I remember right the champion is the champion because he is the best. Don't know any other sport where the best ain't paid the most.

@Gonzaginator - Don't get me wrong, I'm all for stipe re-negotiating if he feels right doing so.

But I was just being factual regarding the fact that he re-negotiated after Werdum & again after reem.
If you remember Ariel drilled him before the JDS fight & he said he was very happy with his bump in pay after the Reem fight & Ariel kept asking "are you sure?" & Stipe started getting mad.

Funny looking back on it, because he was happy until he saw JDS pay lol
That's the market value thing. That's why the UFC doesn't want fighters to know what anyone else is making. PPV cut, bonuses and whatnot. They publish the salaries which are roughly around the same ballpark for most fighters, and the rest gets handled behind closed doors. And fighters aren't stupid enough to tell each other how much bread they're making. You can offer the champ 5 million per fight and he's gonna be thrilled. Until he finds out that the 3rd ranked guy makes 6.5 million because, whatever, his "brand" or "legacy" (Crocop, Overeem etc.). Suddenly the guy wants at least 7 million. Everybody wants what they're worth compared to their peers. It's really just a mental thing. He was happy with 5 million but why should he accept that somebody who is not as good makes more money? Now he wants more money. Soon you'll have fighter shooting for Conor's contract. It'll be interesting to see what happens when Khabib beats Conor. And what happens with Conor's contract and promotion and his PPV % once he piles up some losses which is very realistic when you have guys like Khabib and Tony waiting to dethrone you. He probably moves down again to dominate the smaller guys in order to save his brand.

You can't compare Boxing or MMA or even Tennis/Golf for that matter to team sports. It's apples and oranges.

Renegotiate and I hope you get played less. You are not a draw and no one cares

PPV or not, a Champion should get more money that a contender
This organization is a sham

Champions in MMA are fickle and don't last long. Careers are short and the UFC especially is the best fighting the best every single fight so if a fighter locks into a huge contract and loses the title it's not like you can just take money away or re-negotiate.

I agree champions should be paid the most but they should also generate the most revenue but MMA is different and the leadership has catered too much to the casual viewer and not educated them on appreciating skill. Instead it's about looks, charisma and guilt tripping the fighters into brawling.

Ugh. Come on, Stipe.

You're supposed to be the humble meat and potatoes guy.

Is everyone going to turn diva now.

I can't blame him for playing the game.

Conor set the rules.

Deserving or not, this is what the Conor era has done for MMA.

I am all for more fighter pay, but I didn't want it to be like this.

All those people that were backing Conor's antics about pay claiming that it was good for the rest of the roster never looked at the whole picture. There are going to be many fights, cards, and divisions stagnated by negotiations and money from now on. Announcements are meaningless these days.

Ignorance is bliss. The UFC is more tolerable when you don't follow this stuff.

Well Stipe is about to become the most dominant UFC HW champ ever. And it's not like the champs do have much influence on the marketing. Sure there are exeptions like Conor or Ronda that just take the world by storm but most of that part is on the shoulders of the UFC.

as in ANY place of business and ANY sporting organisation you are paid more when you make your company more money, the belt means nothing if no one will pay to see you defend it

I think he's right to do it... he did get the whole of cleveland cheering for him, he's becoming a bigger draw slowly, and he fights fairly often/doesnt constantly get injured for long periods

DJ is a great example of this, what with the whole dillashaw situation
