Media Stipe Miocic got Croatian citizenship

He's Ohio born and raised. Americans like to claim anything but being American.

Half the UFC fighters walking out with international flags nowadays are actually American.

He always walked out repping the US. It was the US insignia on his fight gear, the American flag next to his name on the screen.

But by the fact of his parents being born in Croatia, by Croatian law he is eligible for citizenship, so why not? (Especially since the rules changed recently and you're no longer required to speak the language.)

It doesn't mean he doesn't consider himself an American. It's not a case of "either/or". It's both at the same time. I can't believe we're still having this damn discussion after he's literally become a DUAL citizen.

Class act who not only serves the country he was born in, but is also proud of his roots

We can all learn from Stipe Miocic

There's a bit of a difference between connecting with your ancestry and actually applying for another citizenship. I don't want to make this personal with Stipe though, he can do what he wants as an individual.

That said, it feeds into the idea held by some that immigrants or their descendants will never truly assimilate. In my view, the country you're born and raised in should always take precedence.

I've seen people criticize Ilia for adopting a Spanish identity over his native Georgia. But that’s not really a bad thing, he loves and embraces the country that gave him the opportunity to succeed in life.
Nothing wrong with having additional citizenships. It gives you options. Without getting political, having the option to leave a country if it reaches the stage you don't want to be there anymore is good to have.

Eyyyy.
Croatia now have two of the all time great HWs!

Pre-Reebok deal Miocic was clearly embracing the Croat identity

Surprised Coatia took him in. I would have banned him from the Country for letting all Croatians down with his performance against Jones.

Especially since I imagine very few people have opinions one way or the other about Croatia.

Now lets see if he moves his family there, I'm not sure about Croatia on its on, but the Balkans are wild I've heard.

I think he got double citizenship now. American Croatian. I got Croatian Bosnian. He is Croatian his parents are from Dubrovnik. Standard Americans are usually mixed with different nationalities and so only identify as American.

i dont think any version of mirko would survive the fighters that stipe fought in the ufc

juiced to the gills or not
Mirko did fight Overeem and was doing pretty well
then Overeem kneed him in the nuts, multiple times. and then it was a No Contest.

Oh no doubt he referred to it, I don't think he stopped having some kind of Croatian insignia on his shorts until he got sponsored by Bad Boy.

I'm talking about after uniforms came in with the Reebok era and there started to be standardized symbology for nationality emblazoned on the sleeve. When it became an official declaration of allegiance, he went with USA (unlike some others, like Cain choosing to sport the Mexico symbol). I don't count the pre-Reebok stuff because you could put anything you wanted on your shorts. What nationality is Condom Depot?

It's a pretty awesome place, one of the most beautiful countries I've ever been to. If you get a chance to see it I'd highly recommend it.

I wonder if the Croats can understand what he says or if they too need subtitles <Wink2>

Right, what I mean is that it’s not a controversial country.
Nobody’s looking at a Croatian passport and giving the holder extra scrutiny due to some common prejudice like the USA, Iran, Venezuela, China, etc…

The only thing that I know is that it’s been the place to buy on the Mediterranean for the last 10-15 years or whatever.
