News Stipe lands full-time job with fire department

Kind of odd, for me, to think of a “full time” job as a fire fighter. Are there that many local fires to be put out?

in rural mountains where I am a house fire makes the 8 o clock news….

Probably a good plan to get that set up while available. He's clearly only has maybe a fight or two left in him before he's done anyways. And it's likely the type of set up where he can set up his training camps to easily run around or during his shift times which he probably chooses at this time anyways. Never too early to make sure your post fight career direction is looked after.

And most of them make a little side money or enjoy the time off.
absolutely. my first cousin is a full time firefighter and he does EMT work on the side. it’s a nice gig if you can stomach the job description and he’s already got PTSD out the wazoo from the military so it pales in comparison to the worst he’s been through.

Fighting fires is only a small percentage of the job. They respond to virtually every emergency... car wrecks, gas leaks, kids getting stuck in things, workplace accidents, drug over doses, etc etc.

I'm sure he'll do other roles in the fire department while he's still an active fighter.

He's probably a hero over there being the former champ, so they'll be nice to him. Plus I'm sure they have a lot of understanding and comradery since it's a life or death type of job in some situations.

Haven't seen this posted but can you be full time with a fire department and still train MMA at the top level? Does this indicate he may not be coming back? Any fire fighters out there?

HE doesn't seem to think he'll be retiring because of it...

He's actually been wanting to go full time for some time now. He was supposed to go through the tests to be eligible back in early 2018, but the TUF coaching gig came up and he had to bail on it. I'm not surprised people are thinking the timing of this is evocative of retirement, but I think it's just happenstance. A local TV news segment said the department he got the job with was, what with various retirements and one thing and another, down 7 men on their roster (2 other men got hired the day Stipe did.) That's real unusual; normally open slots are rare and hotly sought after. One has to strike while the iron is hot.

Correct me if I am wrong. I always assume that firefighters don't do much except chill and workout in the station unless they have emergency. They work like ten 24 hour days out of a month then get all of rest of the month off? I only assume because I knew a paramedic for the fire dept. She sleeps in her truck most of the time but her shifts are like 12 hours and sometimes 24.
My cousin is a firefighter here in Toronto. He works 7 days a month (24 hour shifts). Adds up to 168 hours a month, or 42 hours a week. Not sure how it is like in Cleveland for Stipe, but the job should still provide him a lot of free time to train MMA.
