STARFIELD discussion

I hope so. But the reason bethesda games are always so buggy is because they're always trying things no one else has done and at a scale that has never been done. I don't mind the jank. As long as I don't get quest killing or save erasing games, I'm fine.

I believe part of it, is the old ass engine they were using and refusing to completely overhaul. It seems like you get very similar bugs across the spectrum, from Oblivion, to Fallout, to Skyrim. It seems like some of the problems are baked into that engine.

Exactly. FO4 literally bugged my save to the point I couldn't continue the main quest. I'll probably wait either way but that's mainly because there's just so much stuff coming out this year. I have a feeling I'll be burnt out by the time September comes.
There is nothing else on my list of games I'm looking forward to this year. :(

And they upgraded the same engine for Starfield. I feel like the engine's ability to handle hundreds of interactive objects without slowing to a crawl, and its modability is what keeps Bethesda from switching to a different engine.

Whenever I play a game like Far Cry 5, I think "I wish Fallout looked/played like this....but I also want all the loot/objects, interactivity and mods."

Man that's crazy there's so much out there right now. The new Aliens game, Armored Core in August, FF16 just came out, Baulders Gate 3 in September. I'm sure I'm missing stuff I have a list so I can keep track of it.

Finally Starfield is almost here! Honestly if it hadn’t been for Microsoft purchasing Bethesda and making their future games XBOX exclusives I wouldn’t have bought an XBOX. I love elder scrolls, Fallout and Doom and don’t want to miss out on them. I have a feeling Starfield will be potential Game of the Year material.

Well, at least it's a space based game, so when objects are just randomly floating around and defying the laws of physics, it won't be as out of place as it was in the wasteland or medieval times.

Unofficial Starfield Patch will fix that within a week or so.

Todd bless.

I remember the days of loving gaming so much that I did the same. Happy for you!

It's more baked into their game design. Everyone knows their games are huge, but they also populate their worlds with fully interactive items everywhere that never disappear and each item can potentially interact with every other item in some way. On top of nearly every NPC having its own AI schedule, navigation route and all these control meshes are interacting with each othe constantly. From a coding perspective, thats an absolutely nightmare.

We have people writing articles about how difficult it is to get a door to work in a game:

https://www.theverge.com/22328169/game-development-doors-design-difficult

Then think of NPC acting independently of each other in a giant ass game where every item is permanent and can be interacted with. The logistics of their game design are insane and it's impressive that it actually works at all. Bethesda aren't the only devs to make open world RPGs, but nobody else does an open world the same way Bethesda does. It's not necessarily better or worse. It's a double edged sword, but for many people the trade off is worth it. There's not a lot of games that get as much track as Bethesdas games as far as longevity goes.

And there's yet to be a Witcher grandma.

Just imagine how much more complex it will be once they start using ChatGPT to create unique routines, dialogue, backstories, etc., for NPCs.

It will be buggy. But when it works, it will be amazing.

Bethesda's looting system is so much fun! All the naysayers will be jumping starship once they see all of us drooling over this game. The investigating is such a good part of these games too. As you progress through quests you find little tidbits of info that tell stories of the poor souls who came there before you.

Didnt think about that. That has amazing potential.

Shit, they could even have ChayGPT write procedurally generated plots eventually. At least side quests. You’d be playing a different version of the game each time.

No thank you. I don't need the game breaking free of itself and taking over my Xbox...to start with. Then hacking my wifi and cracking the US defense grid.

No thank you, sir.

Edit: forgot my Xbox is on a hardline connection. Time from self awareness to defense grid hack just got reduced by a factor of 10k.

I'm kind of looking forward to it, but I'm happy that it'll be on Game Pass.

I've tried a few space games, from No Mans Sky to Elite Dangerous, and they didn't click for me.

Expect half the internet to absolutely trash and review bomb the game. They're waiting.

I don’t think there is any real risk of that.

I didn’t like No Man’s Sky at first either. But if you just suffer through the beginning, where they poorly attempt at giving you an understanding of the fundamental mechanics at play, and figure it out a bit, it is really, really fun.

Yeah, to be honest, I did get through the mental beginning and started to go from planet to planet, and port up in that space market thingy.

I just didn't like the culture of the game, found travelling between worlds (and fueling up to do ap) to be tedious, and wasn't fond of the worlds themselves. Felt lonely, featureless and desolate, and those are the ones with flora and fauna.

It seems to be a game best players through coop.
