I decided to watch Rogue One this evening. I'm halfway through, this really is sooo much better than TLJ

I was quite surprised how much I liked Rogue One.

I wish they had dropped every scene with Fin and the chubby Asian chick and filled in the immense holes. I can't think of one thing that Fin and the chumba wumba actually accomplished.

After the last movie, there were questions EVERYONE wanted answers to

Here is what we got;

Q: Who is Snoke?
A: No idea

Q: Why is Luke hiding like a little bitch?
A: Because he was sad. Fuck the rest of the galaxy.

Q: Who is Rey and how can she wreck seasoned force users despite zero training?
A: She's just some random girl that can wreck seasoned force users despite zero training.

There were countless Youtube videos speculating on all of these and they decided not to properly address any of these. That's the most frustrating thing about this movie. Had it been a stand alone movie, it would have been really good. It was shot well, the action was intense, etc. but as part of a series, it definitely fell short.

A: He wasn't always in exile from what I understand. He had and trained padawan's and one of those padawan's was Ben Solo (Kylo Ren). Luke was scared of Ben's dark potential and tried to kill him. This pushed Ben to the darkside and Snoke took advantage of that. Ben went on to kill all the other padawans under Luke. This is why Luke is in exile


I honestly think thats a pretty good reason to be in exile. He is the cause of all this shit that is happening. He ruined many lives and gotten many people killed

And how does going into exile fix this? it doesn't. Kylo turned to the dark side so he goes into hiding? That's the most illogical response for a jedi.

In the original storyline (before Disney), Luke trains Jacen Solo, who is a badass Jedi, but after a long sequence of events, turns to the darkside. Luke loves him too much to kill him. Jacen becomes Darth Caedus and wrecks people, including Luke's wife. Since Luke is the most powerful force user in the galaxy, and can't do what's necessary to stop his nephew, his niece (Jacen's sister) is the one to do it.

That is an infinitely better storyline than what we got.

Yeah I'd heard the same, but where do you draw the line. What separates a Sith from someone who has exceptional skills wielding power from the Dark Side of the force? I'm just curious about the distinction.

This film had special much potential that was honestly wasted. It's not horrible film, it's a descent movie... The sad part is that we see the potential of the film. Let's hope disney learns from thw mistakes and keeps on improving the product.

I think they CG'ed a lot of puppets. Strange decision. They build the puppets and then super-impose them into the movie. I noticed they CG'ed Chewbacca's face in a few scenes which pissed me off.

I'm kind of enjoying the fact that this might be the most polarizing Star Wars movie since ESB. The fact that I'm still thinking about it days later is a good thing. There are definitely things I would change but at the same time, I totally understand the decisions and think they were for the best.

We all in our mind have different takes on Star Wars and what we want to see. I think Force Awakens was as close as you're going to get to fan service and pleasing everyone and people were still mad. We're going to have to see how Episode 9 ties the trilogy together and think only then will we get a good idea of how good or bad the Last Jedi is.

Some things I didn't like :

Poe getting everyone killed. WTF was this? The entire Poe/Holdo/Sending Finn and Rose on a stupid mission should have been re-written to be entirely less stupid. Maybe the writers should have concentrated on the lesson being "transparency of mission plans is a good thing" instead of making everyone look like a stupid asshole and Poe learning not to be a hothead at the expense of a whole crapload of people dying. Also, if they could kamikaze hyperdrive jump entire fleets to death why don't they do this shit all the time or have weapons that do this?
There were just so many things wrong with this entire part of the movie.

Luke dying at this stage. He'll probably show up as a force ghost in the next 4-12 movies or whatever but at this stage I think he needs to be around physically to teach Rey.

Star Wars holds on to the quote "History doesn't repeat itself but it rhymes." The Luke/Rey situation was sort of a flipped Luke/Yoda situation with Luke being the reluctant teacher and Rey being the eager student while Yoda wanted to fully teach Luke and Luke wanted to get out quickly to go face Vader. Both Rey and Luke left early to confront their dark side opponents. Luke then returns to Dagobah and Yoda dies. I think Luke should have stuck around to fully teach Rey in a future movie, and not as a ghost. He was never fully taught. He never fully taught his first training group of students. It would truly complete his journey to Jedi Masterhood to be able to train Rey and declare her a Jedi Knight, a Jedi Master is one that fully teaches a student. Then he can die. Luke deserves that kind of ending.

The First Order taking over the galaxy quickly.

Some things that didn't bother me:

Rey being a nobody. This is another thing that's a "rhyme." Anakin was a nobody. This was a very democratic idea to make her a random kid with force ability. The force isn't monopolized by the Skywalker family and I think that's fine.

Snoke not being fully explained. I feel like Disney is going to make a Snoke/Young Ben/Luke Skywalker school movie since they want a lot of money and he's still a mysterious character. In the original trilogy the Emperor isn't really explained. A New Hope is actually sort of confusing if you watch it without taking into account any other outside pieces of information.

Things I liked:

The lightsaber fights. I love the lightsaber fights in the new movies.

The opening space battle.

Snoke. I'm so happy they didn't have him backflipping all over the place with a lightsaber like they did with Palpatine in the prequels. He's clearly a super strong force user and menacing with his powers. No lightsaber backflips required. Even though he's dead he's still really intriguing and he was portrayed well by Serkis and the VFX team.

I also love how Kylo took Snoke out. Kylo is so brute force about things but when he finally used his smarts and deception he was able to beat Snoke. He went back to dumb dumb brute force Kylo when he tried to kill Luke but the moment he took out Snoke is how deceptive Dark force wielders should take out their masters. Kylo is a very interesting character. Again with the rhymes, he's like Vader but with actually ascending to control the Empire instead of repenting and dying. But he also has his own relationship with the force. He's not Sith or Jedi. I just hope they don't pigeonhole him into being the big bad that Rey needs to defeat in the end. But they probably will.

Final Thoughts:

Even though there's a lot to criticize about this movie it still left me intrigued about what will happen in the 3rd installment. I'm guessing they're probably going to start episodes 10-12 shortly after. But while i'm still interested about future movies i'm now more cautious about my expectations as well. At the very least the lightsaber fights should be entertaining.

Overall I score the movie a 6. It has some scenes/plot points that are just bottom of the barrel but it also has some scenes that I though were excellent and very well done.

I actually have high hopes for the Solo movie.
The screenplay is by Lawrence Kasdan who wrote Empire, Jedi AND Raiders and has worked with Lucas since 1980. He knows the Star Wars world and the characters as good as anybody.
Ron Howard is a solid/great, old school type director who knows how to tell a story and structure a movie.

If done right Solo could be a great flick.

I’m done trying to figure out where they are trying to go. I just really enjoyed the movie for the eye candy it is. I will agree the Finn/Rose side job was pointless.

Firstly, isn't Star trek 2009 set in an alternate universe - therefore keeping the entire star trek canon intact?
Secondly, I never had more than a passing interest in star trek so I don't care anyway. The movie was entertaining and thrilling with great characters, and humour.

The main gripe (for me) with TLJ is not that the characters went in an unexpected direction (it doesn't bother me that Rey doesn't have a lineage) its not a lack of abundance of fan service either, it's simply that the movie is a confused mess which doesn't make sense at all, for several major reasons which I mentioned in my previous post, and more.
And for what it's worth, I never really nitpick on movies for "plotholes", in fact I find that many posters on here are overly pedantic about plot holes and don't give a movie enough leeway ...but TLJ just doesn't make sense, either on it's own or (especially) as part of an established universe.
