Maybe I'm wrong- but I tend to take Luke's account quite seriously in terms of his sensing the darkness in Ren, and then being completely floored by the extent to which that was the case. His temporary weakness in wanting to off his nephew might have forced Ren's hand/galvanized him to act quickly, but my assumption is that he was already corrupted and it was just a matter of time. Only difference if Luke turned a blind eye and didn't confront Kylo there is that Ren would have likely gotten the drop on him and the others at a later date.

So there is a chance in your opinion he would have went to the dark side no matter what

If true that brings some interesting questions.

I think that would be better for his character and not just be tied to 1 moment

Totally get that

But they only have 1 movie left in this trilogy.

I hope that will be enough and he doesn't just turn into some stepping stone for Rey

I'm wondering what the deal is with this being a trilogy. What's that mean exactly? Star Wars is one long, connected story so I can't imagine everything in the last two films is just going to neatly wrap up and end with the next film.

Well they have a new trilogy planned after this one but I think its a brand new story

The thing is, we still don't know a ton about Kylo. We are learning as we go, from film to film.

Other than his lack of backstory .

Most people just find him underwhelming. Vader was built up as a strong nemesis over 3 films. Kylo got owned in his debut film.

Absolutely in my opinion.

I think the only real ambiguity there is that Ren wants Rey on his team so he tries to frame it like Luke made him ie was completely responsible for the turn to the Dark.

Rey is angered enough by this that she confronts Luke who then explains it the way that I think makes much more sense. Luke was not some guy who felt threatened by powerful others or wanted the spotlight on himself. The only reason he would even entertain the notion of killing Kylo is if he thought he was already too far gone to do anything about. Remember, this is the guy that kept thinking there was good in Vader through Return when there would seem to be a lot of indications that it was, as Vader himself put it, "too late for him." So for Luke to be scared shitless enough to think there was no going back and Ren had to die must have been some serious, serious shit.

To me, it's just a tipping point. I feel like Ren was already corrupted and heading toward the alliance with Snoke, but Luke pushed him over the edge in terms of cornering him and forcing him to act.

i like Kylo Ren. he’s the best thing about both movies. (serious)

Well Vader was a Sith Lord and Kylo is just some kid

I have to assume it will still be connected in some way, just as these films are connected to everything that has come before it. Or are they just going to tell some totally different shit from another part of the galaxy or another time?

It would be cool to see a flashback at the start of episode 9

You don't need to be this powerhouse to be a compelling character. Kylo is hands down the most compelling character from this new trilogy. Why? Because there is real conflict and emotion with his character.

Without a film what Lucas did was take the spirit of his version of AN and apply it to this little project he never thought would fly, let alone at lightspeed -- which was called LUKE STARKILLER AND THE BATTLE OF THE WHILLS or something mondo gay like that. Steven Spielberg bet him STAR WARS would do better than his movie at the time, and George is still paying Spielberg today (not really, I think).

(Turns out a Whill? Is what Yoda is. Hunh. Because, you know, where there's a Whill there's a way .... *wonky horn*).
Donnie Yen plays one of the guardians of the whills in Rogue One.

Had no idea what a whill was until now so thanks

I think they are planning something radically different

You would have to look it up tho cause I'm not really up to date with that

I actually like Kylo a lot, even moreso after two movies. I'd like to see him get multiple movies to really develop from a boy to a man.

What's the distinction between Sith and let's say, Dark Side of the Force users.

Neither Snoke nor Ren is Sith but both seem to be doing some next level shit that I didn't see other Sith lords like Mau and Dooku doing. I mean when Ren was stopping laser blasts in mid air and using the force to drag someone across the room into his grip and wresting thoughts from people's minds, it was pretty clear he was really high level.

Snoke, meanwhile, absolutely toyed with Rey who is the prodigy.

To be fair, the competition aint all that great

Well I think the only reason they are doing "next level shit" is just the power creep

Plus its cool to see that kinda stuff in action scenes.
