So what happens to Leia's character in the next movie? I guess she'll just have to be killed off screen or written off somehow.

I like your style.

To be honest, man, when I saw all the lasers shooting at Luke and knew Luke wasn't going to die there, I was just thinking he was going to show he'd become some sort of Keanu-esque figure where he was operating on another wavelength of the force and the blasts wouldn't even touch him.

When he was standing there unscathed and brushed his shoulder off (a little lame but kind of fun for the future gif purposes) my mind was in overdrive as to what he was going to do next. In actuality, I fully expected him to showcase some never-before-seen-Steven-Segal-real-lethal-shit with the force. Like just clenching his fist and crushing whole AT-AT Walkers like a soda can.

What they went with was more of a pulling a Kenobi. Nothing wrong with that but obviously many of us were hoping for Luke to tear shit up.
I was hoping he'd create a force black hole and make all the at-ats implode.

Or how about this movie finally stopped the everyone is related/small universe nonsense.

You guys just wanted another generic disney machine made film. No worries though, JJ is coming back to save the franchise.

This film keeps a hell of a lot of the style of Abrams film though and actually part of the problem there in just how small everything feels. The originals and Rogue One worked much more though inference of scale, as much action as these films show the actual scale of events feels far smaller.

I would add as well that ontop of the other unanswered questions the whole nature of "the resistance" still makes limited sense to me. The New Republic was the dominant force in the galaxy at the start of TFA with the first order on the rise so were does a small band of rebels fit into that?

Based on the writing she’d probably end up using the force to bring herself back to life.

Were the republic engaged in war with the first order?

I thought the first order vs resistance was like the Soviet Union vs the mujahideen...and the republic were like the USA.

I'm guessing we'll see quite a long jump forward in time with her either having died in the years inbetween or the film starting on her funeral.

Taking into consideration that the entire resistance needs to be rebuilt through grassroots inspiration, we're headed for a time jump of 2 to 5 years and she'll be written off as dead or busy recruiting/governing.

I saw this movie again tonight.

Kylo is the best part of this movie. His story is actually awesome. And Driver is a very good actor.

It’s better on a second viewing but it also makes you notice the glaring problems even more.

They still needed to train Rey and keep Luke alive at the end.

I’m guessing the next movie (episode9) will take place years after this movie ends. The rebellion needs to be reformed and built again.

In some respects I think that makes the faults stand out more, TFA for me was just a "meh" for the most part from me bar a few hints at Kylo being more interesting but this film does I think have moments of excellence in it and the potential for more which makes its failings elsewhere that much more obvious.

Reminds me rather of Revenge of the Sith in that respect.

That's one long ass sentence bruh.

If they would've let Luke train her and showed Snoke and Kylo's relationship the movie would've been better. Cutting the casino scene compeltely or making it a good plot device, rather than a silly one. Poe could've led them on the side quest detailing his natural leadership abilities over being Looked at as a pilot (granted the best in resistance) who blows things up.

You could've had Phasma on their tales the entire time adding more to her character as well.

Even keep the same ending but let Luke live until the next movie. Would've been the better route imo. Killing Luke was meaningless. And I still say he should've destroyed all the Walkers on the screen with the force. Really showing the exertion of it all and the command he has on the force.

i think the real twist would've been to let Luke live for all 3 trilogies and killing off everyone else. No one would predict that.

A few plot changes and the movie would be incredible imo. The Snoke throne room scene was done extremely well but would've had more gravitas if Rey was trained. She still would've left with the tough decision at the end showing her walking the balance between light and dark.

I believe the next movie will take place years after this one and they'll write her out off camera. I could be completely wrong tho lol

It would have needed to dump Abrams cartoonish tone as well but yeah I'd agree with that, Snoke himself wasn't perhaps that interesting(making him CGI just seems rather pointless) but playing off of Kylo's character made the scenes we got some of the best in the film and there should have been a lot more of that.

Again I think the film made a massive blunder in how it treated Luke that actually undermined its big twist. You look back to Obi Wan and his admission of failure with Vader has the impact it does because the character is otherwise carrying a lot of moral wisdom. By showing Luke as so flawed right from the start the film loses any impact in its twist or deconstruction of the "legend" around him.

Honestly I think Johnson should have ignored Abrams bushing Finn's background under the carpet in TFA and made it a much bigger issue in his film, having him facing prejudice as a former Storm trooper would have given the character some much needed depth.

You know, if it weren't for the fact we see Finn's motivation at the beginning of TFA, he certainly does seem to fuck up enough to warrant suspicion that he just might be a spy. His cover IS the incompetence, dontcha see?! Which makes him a Palpatine!

So far I've seen a lot of complaints that want more of the old stuff. Given the franchise is trying to turn a new leaf, and now that the element of surprise and the disappointment of expectation has been rendered moot -- how soon will it be before you haters give it a second go? Never? Only if on cable?

No one who disliked it is willing to give it a second shot in the theater, are you? Except for Amerikuracana, who didn't exactly hate it the first time.

I will, for sure. Im disappointing, but I don't hate it. There were good scenes and Im willing to try to shed my presuppositions and try to experience it again knowing where its heading.

However, Luke milked an Alien.

I mean, are the defenders willing to admit that there are a lot of terrible things in the movie? "LETS GO, CHROME DOME!" And killing off Ackbar off screen while trying to give Holdo some heroic death was a travesty. I know the defense will be "Theyre letting go of the past and building up the new characters", which is fine. But they didnt build up Holdo. Why am I caring? Im not.

Then Finn totally get his chance to earn his place in badassery, but Margaret Cho has to come in and fuck everything up and give the single worst line of dialogue in the movie. Her whole character was useless filler. If you want to build up new characters to replace the old, make me give a shit about them. I was ambivalent to Finn in FA, but this movie set him back several steps.

I get that it was unexpected and you didn't know where it was going but there were also lots of missteps and ruined potential.

6/10
I wanted to like it, but there was not a single relationship that wasn't Kylo and Rey that I cared for. I hope blue Luke is less of a smartass comedian like Han and more of like a nobel Obiwan. Or something original. That would be nice. There's still time to do Patton Oswalt's boba fett idea in the third one.

Saw it and it was...a film.

Film seems to a based around an OJ-esque slow speed pursuit. Probably another once over.

Rey is still very likeable, I thought she should've just gone with Ben. She could helped him deal with his clear need to be loved, while he would help her deal with parents you don't respect and they could be training buddies. Twas not to be. Ben was the best part of the movie, when he mind-called Rey with no shirt that was the only BIG laugh this got from me. Chewy wanting to eat the little furry birds was next up.

Finn was useless as was his hair helmet girl. Poe did things this time and learned that being a self serving dick generally doesn't help your combat force as a whole.

Old Man Luke kept his word, he sure didn't leave that island. Wonder if Hamill asked to be killed off when he found out he was gonna be a bitter hermit the whole time. Now all the original humanoid heroes are gone in the movies or in life...well, we have 3PO.

Would give it like a high D or low C, like me in Algebra from 7th grade through college.

LOL, reminds me of this:

That’s how I’d feel if it wasn’t for this place too.

It's like they gathered all these out of touch principals in one place. A place where using the term "sherbro" somehow doesn't make you an embarrassment.

Am I the only one who felt uncomfortable looking at this chick for the whole time ? I know I'm supposed to assess the actress based off of her acting instead of the her appearance. But for fuck sake, she was the only asian character who had major role and they just couldn't cast someone who is at least palatable to our eyes.
