STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Blazes to Record $120.5 Million on Friday

2wehys5.jpg

J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens is making history at the worldwide box office, landing the biggest Friday of all time in North America with $120.5 million and crossing $250 million globally in just three days.

Box office observers say Force Awakens, graced with an A CinemaScore and rave reviews, could climb as high as $240 million-$245 million. Either way, it's destined to eclipse the $208.8 million domestic debut of Jurassic World this summer and set a new record.

Force Awakens also has a shot at claiming the top global bow of all time, besting Jurassic World's $524.9 million, although Jurassic World had the benefit of opening day and date in China (Force Awakens doesn't launch in the world's second-biggest moviegoing market until Jan. 9).

In North America, this weekend looks to be the biggest in history in terms of overall revenue, crossing $300 million for the first time ever. Friday's haul for Force Awakens includes a record-breaking $57 million in Thursday night previews at the North American box office.

The previous Thursday night champ was Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' Part 2, the final film in the franchise, which earned $43.5 million in Thursday previews in July 2011. Deathly Hallows 2 also held the record for the biggest Friday until now ($91 million).

Just sat down. Movie starts in 30 min.. Can't wait. Popcorn for breakfast!

Except when they gave it to a storm trooper named Fin and he was able to hold his own and even damage someone trained in the force? I thought this movie did the opposite of giving the lightsaber respect.
To be fair, we don't know the extent of KR's training.

Finn has been embraced by audiences and critics alike! Personally I feel he is responsible for 100% of the success of this movie.

I'm shocked to see some of the negative opinions. It was everything I wanted it to be a more. It destroyed the prequels while paying homage to the original trilogy and setting up a new generation. Is it similar to A New Hope? Yes but that plays into the story. It's meant to follow Return of the Jedi and it does that almost flawlessly.

Finn, Rey, Poe were all instantly likable and most importantly, acted like actual humans with chemistry and humor. They did in 5 minutes what the prequels couldn't do in 3 movies.

Kylo Ren was incredibly interesting and Adam Driver nailed it. I loved every scene he was in.

An easy 8/10 or 9/10 if I'm feeling generous.

As for spoilers...

Tears were pouring from my face when Luke showed up at the end. Anyone who grew up and loved Star Wars, if you didn't love that scene or get emotional, I don't think you are a fan. Rey holding out the light saber and Luke facial expression said it all. That combined with the music, the beautiful landscape and the camera work, it may have been of the best scenes in Star Wars history.

Han's death was certainly emotional but seeing Luke again was like seeing Jesus return.

I agree. Not sure what the fuck is up all these negative nancies in here.

Completely agree with Dragon, especially to the parts on copying from A New Hope and Star Trek as well as the outstanding job done on the FX and CGI. I've caught myself saying "that's less than stellar CGI" maybe once. It's so easy to be smitten by the visuals of this movie.

some stupid scenes and plot holes with either no explanation, or forced exposition, but it's easy to get over it... it's SW, afterall. And lately, no movie escapes it. Example:
Rey and Finn holding their own, even overpowering Kylo in lightsaber combat, while holding it for the first time, and not getting all of their limbs cut off in a matter of seconds was ridiculous.

While in spoilers, Kylo Ren is awful. He is Anakin ver 2.0. Whiny, borderline pathetic, insecure. I still contemplate why they took/directed it that way. I mean, Anakin actor was among top 3 complaints about the prequel trilogy (especially in Ep 3). They might've included Jar Jar as well. Really poor poor choice IMO.

oh yeah... i remembered.
first time i'm getting into this...

Kylo Ren is the son of Han and Leia, trained by Luke. And will ultimately be brought down by Rey (Luke's daughter) and Finn (unrelated to anyone), who will fail at first, but will be helped by Luke as he feels he failed his mentors by training Kylo.

you heard (read) it here, folks.

called it.

I really enjoyed the movie. Honestly, right now... It is my favorite Star Wars movie. Right after it ended I wanted to see it again.

A lot of people are complaining about how the Light Saber battles are weak.. I liked them a lot. Way more realistic than the prequels and not so far beyond the originals. I don't mind the prequels Light Saber duels with all the flips and what not, but I do prefer a more subdue approach.

As far as people complaining about Kylo Ren not being able to take on Finn and Rey... He got shot in the gut with the freakin Bowcaster! Everyone else that got shot with that Bow went flying like ten feet!! I thought it was a great scene/battle.

Quick thought: Poe is the new Han! Dude has charisma and is a total badass. He needed more screen time. Speaking of more screen time.... Captain Phasma! WOW! Totally underused and one of the hardest toys to get right now. She is the new Boba Fett.

Replying to spoiler tag...

You have to keep in mind that Kylo is the last of his kind. The Jedi and Sith have been completely wiped out. All that remain are Luke and Kylo. The point of Kylo is he THINKS he is badass but he's basically a white belt. He's a white belt that presumably Luke taught some force and lightsaber skills but he really hasn't had a chance to use them. Finn didn't really hold his own, as he was nearly killed and his spine severed. Rey held her own because he's strong with the force and may already be more powerful than Kylo. He's likely never had anyone ever challenge him before. You can tell he's was afraid and unsure of himself.

I agree he's Anakin 2.0 but he's Anakin done right. He's a spoiled brat that's basically been given super powers and uses them for fun and is reckless. We've never seen that before in Star Wars and I think it's exciting and new. At the end, Snoke mentioned it's time to complete his training so I expect in the next movie, Kylo is going to be vastly improved and more patient. I loved it.

For thowe complaining about the lightsaber battles...Don't forget
KR had taken a shot from chewie and was bleeding

It's pretty simple, they didn't write a fresh story at all. They just pressed rewind on a new hope and photoshop'd Rey where Luke was in half the scenes, changed some names, and did quick rewrite of other scenes. It's the epitome of modern Hollywood's unwillingness to create anything new because the risk/work involved with it.

Reys intro story too similar to Luke's, her desert planet extactly the same as Luke's was, a cute droid with a hologram of a Jedi? Seen it. The falcon broke quick fix it to escape, yawn seen it 30 times before. Another Death Star? Well we know before they even roll the film that it's going to blow up some planets and get blown up but hopefully they have a creative take on taking it out...oh my god they literally carbon copied that scene too. Are you kidding me? Every scene that had to do with this Death Star could have been left out and no one would have missed it, so yea a lot of the 3rd act was meaningless filler.

How is the Galaxy any different then where it was left off in New Hope? Seems the same. What did we learn about the nature of the force? Nothing.

A casual Star Wars fan off the street with no screenwriting experience would have inspired to be more creative than these highly paid writers. Plenty of fun parts but terrible story telling[\SPOILER]

Read the reviews of those that thought it was mediocre. It's perfectly understandable why folks wouldn't like this movie or rate it as mediocre.

i did forget to write that i was quite impressed with Kylo Ren's force knowledge. Apart from the standard ones,
freezing that pulse blast was insane. Really innovative. Force mind read was kind of meh.

Forgot that Kylo was injured. My bad, i guess.

fair point on Luke and Kylo. Though, in all honesty, Leia is also Force sensitive. I imagine we'll see her wielding the lightsaber or using Force to an extent in Ep 8 and 9.

don't agree on other point.
Anakin was just what you explained, used the Force for fun and was reckless. Kenobi warned him several times on that exactly. Looking forward to future films, and to see if they actually develop the character, maybe the point of him was to make him look whiny.

i agree with much of what ts said.

also, Kylo got shot by his dog when you think of it.

Sea level Cain
Prep Time Batman

Injured Kylo.

Think I will take my eldest daughter some time next week to watch it.

Nobody wouldve mentioned it if the character was a white guy. It just wouldve been another guy in the movie.

And I quote bluesandwiches "but they have to push that interracial agenda don't they?.....you have no backstory of this character or why he does the things he does or his motives. He even speaks ebonics. not kidding."

What ebonics did he speak? Did he call someone "cuz" or something?
Whats the problem with having a black guy in the movie?

DarthVader was a black guy -No one complained.

Lando was a Black guy (and an awesome character) -no one complained.

Mace Windu was a black guy (and the GOAT even over Yoda) -no one complained.

I think you're reaching for people not liking a film to be racist for some reason. Which is kind of your own racism showing up here.

Oh, and TS, Laia was the original owner of R2 to begin with.

I haven't watched it and don't plan on watching it, but you could probably already have predicted that a movie like this would rely heavily on fan-service at the expense of good, original story-telling. So these criticisms do not come as a surprise to me, and doesn't seem like a movie I'd be able to enjoy.

My question for those who have seen it though, is how would you rate it as a standalone film? What qualities (if any) allow it to outshine its predecessors? And would viewing it separate from the other films make it better or worse in your eyes?
