But I believe his quote about the Morrison fight was, "If he was gonna run all night instead of fight I don't even know why he showed up." To my knowledge the only time the older George had something very derrogitory to say about his opposition.
 
Hmmmn, what is interesting is that Stallone was hit by Shavers and he still says Morrison hit harder:

"Heavyweight boxer Earnie Shavers was considered for the role of Clubber Lang. This was because Sylvester Stallone thought that he was good enough to fight a real boxer, instead of an actor. But in a practice fight Shavers, taking it easy on Stallone, broke two of Stallone's ribs in less than three rounds, so he was immediately dropped from consideration for the role."

This is from IMDB so I am not sure how credible it is.

With good reason. He was rocked by a good hook. Morrison never decided to plant his feet against George. In retrospect, it was probably a smart move. George could take anything Tommy dished out, and the reverse is obviously not true.

Thanks man... I visit the site regularly enough, I just don't post as much. In fact, I'm in the Phillipines right now on a tropical island.... After this, I head to Bangkok, Thailand. So now you see why I don't post much...

Anyhow, yea, I'd hold that Lewis KO against Ruddock, and deep inside, you do as well. He was obliterated in 2 rounds. There were many lesser fighters that lasted several rounds against Lewis. When we are talking about the quality of a fighter's chin, a devastating KO loss like that HAS to be held against the fighter in question.

Sure, Joe Walcott has valuable opinions on boxing, but his evaluation of how hard Mike Tyson punches isn't one of them. Joe Walcott thinks a 215 lbs. jacked up Mike Tyson would have fared well in the 1940s? REALLY?

He thinks Mike Tyson would do okay for himself against the likes of 184 lbs., 12-22-2 fighter Joe Lipps? Or maybe the dangerous 175 lbs. heavyweight Tiger Red Lewis with a record of 9-5-1? Ezzard Charles and Rocky Marciano were both 185 lbs. "heavyweight" champions. Yeah, Tyson would have been okay against them, just like he was against Spinks, who was out of his weight class.

I've never been hit by either man, but I'm willing to bet that professional boxers would agree that Earnie Shavers hit harder than Tyson.

Other guys I'd put on that list ahead of Tyson? George Foreman. David Tua. I'd say Joe Frazier hit AS hard as Tyson.

You want an honest opinion on Mike Tyson's punching power? Larry Holmes, who actually FOUGHT both Tyson and Shavers, had this to say:

"Tyson's punch is a Corvette. Shavers' is a Mack truck."

After getting dropped by Tyson, Holmes proceeded to get violently knocked for the only time in a 30+yeear career.

Case closed. Larry can say whatever he wants, Tysons the one who knoxked him out.

Yeah because Larry was clearly the same guy when he fought Tyson that he was against Shavers. Right.

Larry Holmes vs. Earnie Shavers - Larry Holmes is 30 years old. He's the WBC Heavyweight Champion. Holmes stopping Shavers was the fourth of what would be double digit KO or TKO stoppages in a title defense for him. He had fought only three months prior, and it was his third fight that year. It's also the second time that Holmes fought Shavers - going to a 12 round decision the year before. There's nothing that suggests Larry Holmes WASN'T in his prime at this point.

Larry Holmes vs. Mike Tyson - Larry Holmes is 39 years old. He's three years removed from any part of a fractured heavyweight title, and coming off of two point losses to Michael Spinks. He's also coming off of a two year layoff to fight a guy that's six fights in to a unified heavyweight title reign. Larry would go on to beat some bums, then Ray Mercer, to get a crack at Evander Holyfield, which would essentially be the end of Holmes' meaningful career. There's nothing that suggests that Larry Holmes WAS in his prime at this point.

Again, you can spin anything any way you want to try and make an argument. If you want to take the word of some boxing historians and guys that never fought one or both men, that's fine. I'm perfectly satisfied taking the word of one of the greatest heavyweight champions of all time that was in the ring with both men.

Graceland is indeed a good time, whether you're a fan of The King or not. If you're a fan, though, it's even better.
