Gale "Kansas Comet" Sayers led the nation in the long jump (HSers) with a 24-11 jump, and his older bro Roger was a world ranked sprinter who once beat Bob Hayes,

Niner cornerback Jim Johnson a Hall of Famer is the younger bro of Olympic decathlon gold medalist Rafer Johnson.

Actor Woody Strode also rassled , once beating Gorgeous George.

At the 1960 Olympics our womens 4x1 team was Tennessee State with Wilma Rudolph on anchor. A college team won the gold, a first and a last.

In 1932 none of our 100m sprinters ran on our Olympic 4x1 but.......we won anyway. Another first and last.

In 1964 two of our 100m guys Mel Pender and soon to be Eagle Trenton Jackson pulled up in the heats, they were injured and done. So we bring in our 200m guys Paul Drayton and Richard Stebbins to go with Gerry Ashworth (last white cat on our Olympic 4x1) and Bullet Bob Hayes.

Keep in mind this team was just thrown together they had no chemistry at all, no practice as a team, so no wonder at the final exchange Bullet Bob a soon to be Dallas Cowboy was a good 5 meters down when he got the stick, here's what happened......

In that relay Bullet Bob ran a 8.6.........think about that, an incredible 8.6. That is stil a...WHOA....in 2025.

A WR 10.06 on a dirt track over 60years ago obviously trumps all other times by NFLers to be.

He ran that 9.1 WR for yards four times.

Hayes was a converted running back out of Florida A&M. He must have been pretty good since he was chosen to play on a college all star team that would beat the NFL champs.

The men’s 10,000 meter (an upset victory by the American runner Billy Mills) and the marathon (Abebe Bikila’s 2nd Gold medal with shoes) are followed right to the end showing the last finishers. The 1968 Marathon finish would have its fair share of heroics.

Of course, we have Bob Hayes individual 100m victory over Harry Jerome and the famous 8.5 second relay leg in the 4x100m.

Jocelyn Delecour, France’s anchor leg runner, famously said to Paul Drayton before the relay final, “You can’t win, all you have is Bob Hayes”.

Afterwards, Drayton replied, “All you need is Bob Hayes”.

However, only Hayes' performance in the semifinals is allowed to stand as a world record. That's because the wind was 7.75 miles per hour in the final, above the allowable 4.473 mph for record consideration.



Running with his elbows out and his knees uncommonly high, the thick-shouldered, thick-muscled Hayes bolts into the lead at the start of the semifinal. The 20-year-old senior-to-be turns it up another gear in the middle 50 yards and breaks the world record of 9.2 seconds set by America's Frank Budd in 1961 and tied by Canada's Harry Jerome (twice) in 1962.
