Media Something that nobody noticed during Gane vs JDS fight

His striking and footwork looks great. He also seems to have good fight IQ, the way he fought JDS was close to perfect, he used his kicks well at the start of the fight to dictate the range and slow JDS down then after he slowed down he started using his hands more and when JDS closed range Gane closed it even more into a clinch where he had the advantage over JDS. The biggest weakenss in his game seems to be his hands but with his movement, kicks, clinch and overall athletic abilities that doesn't seem to be a big issue and he will improve there as well.

I would like to see him fight Lewis, Overeem or Rozenstruik, I could definitely see him wearing them out to a later round TKO or decision.

Looked good against JDS, but I wouldn't put the odds close against Ngannou.

Fighters on their feet are a moving target, often when they are hit in the back of the head it is due to them turning their head.

If there is precedent for standing back of the head shots ruled a foul in MMA, I would like to see it. Barring significant evidence to establish a precedent for the foul call, I will continue to assume that that foul won’t be called unless an EXTREMELY egregious incident happens where the fighter is quite clearly targeting the back of the head on purpose and not targeting the ear or the temple and the other guy turned away.
Exactly.
Cain and Javier Mendes also complained that Ngannou hit Cain on the back of the head (very questionable on the replay). That's just not thow it works.

Ganes striking is very legit. He has a muay Thai victory over the #1 ranked hw in the world.
Izzys weight class wasn't the deepest and the higher the weight class the worse it gets. Muay Thai is 10.000x worse. It makes HW boxing look like LW x 100.. Haha.

But lower weight classes Mt and kb are full of killers.

BTW this fight showed that JDS should retire. I bet Butterbean could KO JDS right now.

The jab that rocked JDS :

That trick is HIGH level standup.

Remember, Gane has only been doing MMA for 3 years, and he did Muay Thai before only for 3 years. He is a beginner in all aspect of the game, but a tremendous fast learner. After one year and a half of luta livre he was submitting UFC HWs.

I believe his weakness is his boxing, in the pocket. But he can learn if he spent some times in it. Sky is the limit for this specimen.

Full breackdown of the TKO :

MT specialists have issues with boxers in the pocket.
Boxing specialists have issues with karate's unorthodox striking and distance control.
Karate specialists have issues with MT leg kicks and clinch game.

That's what my 14 years of watching mma has shown me.

The same can be said for MMA, Unranked UFC HW fights are abysmal most of the times. That said Boughanem is good, and actually has a good cardio.

Talking about Izzy, he did comment on Gane....solid endorsement:

So the number 1 HW muay thai guy is a fat slob (the jelly on the right)

Damn HW muay thai is a joke worst than the UFC lol
No wonder why a big guy athletic like Gane manage to beat him fairely easy. That doesnt mean Gane striking is exceptional. He needs to works on his boxing if he dont want to get put in Pluto by Ngannou
Well yea when riddick bowe was making his muay thai debut a couple years ago they had him highly ranked and given a title shot automatically

This fatty is actually a freakin beast, has a great clinch work and huge cardio. I was surprised too.
Well sure but at what level? There's a chubby guy at my gym who fights in mma on the regional circuit and is a "beast" as well

And then you have Connor Mcgregor who is a boxing specialist but doesnt have issues with unorthodox striking because he is a black belt TKD.

International level ? Lives in thailand and train there since he's like 12 yo level ?

I disagree.

Conor is a karate stylist that incorporates boxing techniques. He doesn't jab. He has thought one shot explode into your opponent that is characteristic of karate. His distance control definitely shows his background in karate.

Sensei Seagal taught him that

That's what happens a lot when an orthodox fighter fights vs a southpaw

In MMA it isn't illegal, I doubt it was intentional.

JDS is old and shot, doesn't take much to beat him

There is something else that nobody noticed:
Gane fought almost all the fight in southpaw, but he is not a southpaw, it's actually the first time he fight predominantly in this stance. This was part of the game plan.

I went to watch all his previous fights and understood a lot about his fighting style:

- All his boxing combos are thrown in orthodox stance. In southpaw, he only throw jabs, quite similar to wonderboy.

- Almost all his kicks come from southpaw stance: inside low kick, liver kick, high kick, front kick, oblique kick.

Against JDS, a very dangerous boxer and power puncher, Gane and his team designed a kick heavy game plan, in opposite stance, that nullified JDS best weapons, keeping distance and moving away from the power hand.
And that explains why so many people have criticized his boxing in this fight: he doesn't box in southpaw.
That also explains the pop in his jab: he is right handed.

This is brilliant gameplan with nearly* perfect execution. It highlights how adaptable and disciplined Gane is and the strategic genius of his head coach Fernand Lopez.

*nearly perfect, because Gane briefly went back to orthodox, tried a liver hook, and got caught hard by JDS.

Bravo !

Just saw this video of fight camp after my previous post, confirms it:
Lots and lots of kicking work in southpaw, and Lopez warns Gane to be very cautious of JDS boxing, to be safe with hands high at boxing range and not try to trade with him.

Lopez is so meticulous, he works out all the details. Probably why it didn't work that well with Ngannou who is more an instinctive fighter.

You re right. In the UFC nobody implemented a leg kick gamemlan against Conor so far. Eddie Alvarez threw one leg kick that stubbled conor.
