Social Social media, YouTube and Games banned for under 16 in Australia. ID required

It's a good premise. Social media is peak brain rot that makes young people do dumb shit. It could disappear tomorrow and the world would be a better place. Retarded shit like Hawk Tuah wouldn't exist.
to be fair we've had retarded shit forever. this is just retarded shit version 7.0.

Have you actually encountered it? Can't say I have, and I certainly haven't provided ID or verification to Google.

We already have government certified digital ID's for verification.
That EVERYONE needs to provide before they can post anything online?

Oh and the "voluntary" part on their site is utter bullshit. It is NOT voluntary already for some people.

That won't happen. It'll stay optional, but the platforms themselves may adopt it as a measure for online verification depending on their size and budget.

I posted about this a couple of times earlier in the reddit thread.

Poor kids...

It's not just kids. How do you know if kids haven't just lied about their ages if you don't require ID from everyone?

I already have one of these ID's as I was FORCED to sign up for it.

It will remain voluntary... until it isn't.

How were you forced and for what? Unless you were already personally taking steps to circumvent the fact that by law all our telcos and ISPs are required to record and store the metadata of all your online activity, you don't have any online privacy anyway.

You clearly don't run your own company.

You need to sign up to verify your identity as a director through the MyGovID app.

...and FFS it's 2024, who hasn't been using a VPN on their PC's and phones for at least a decade at this point?

You can get a Director ID without getting a digital ID, you just have to go through more inconvenience.
It's like the people that say they are "Forced" to own a mobile phone. Bullshit. You've made your choices.
Hopefully you've done your research, as you're relying on the idea that the VPN you're using isn't also recording and submitting your data to the government (or worse) at request.
How much control do you have over the VPN you use? How much do you trust Teddy Sagi?

Unless they have changed it since, no I was not given the choice.

Teenagers will be banned from using Tiktok, Snapchat, Instagram, X and Reddit until the age of 16 in Australia under new laws to be rushed through Parliament but will still be able to use message services including WhatsApp.
Communications Minister Michelle Rowland confirmed on Thursday that the new laws will come into force in late 2025.

But they will not be ‘grandfathered’ which means that a 13 year old who currently has a TikTok or Instagram account will theoretically be forced to delete the app until they are older when the new laws come into effect.

The Snapchat ban, first revealed by news.com.au, is set to cause uproar among younger Australians who are heavy users of the site amid questions of how difficult it will be to stop children finding a way around the ban.

But kids will also still be able to use YouTube and Google classroom under the landmark changes designed to limit the harm that social media is causing teenagers.

The new laws will require social media platforms to take reasonable steps to prevent under 16s from having accounts.

not exactly sure how i feel. about this.. i think its better for kids to be of social media ... but i do not trust our goverment at all .

Bet it turns into digital id we all need somehow...

Australia’s Digital ID Act and a new Trusted Exchange (TEx) – an update and a deep dive

Digital ID – a national priority

Australia’s new national Digital ID laws are due to commence by the end of the year, providing the legislative basis for broader adoption of Digital ID – and expansion of the Australian Government Digital Identity System (AGDIS, better known as myGov / myGovID).

Digital ID is a key initiative underpinning the Australia’s cyber security strategy and national strategy for identity resilience.

So im already untrusting obviously.. combine that with the new misinformation laws being pushed

that gives goverment the right to decide what is and isnt misinformation .... and we saw the misinformation they pushed throughout covid..

The only people legally able to " misspeak " ill call it will be politicians and goverment mouthpieces..

yes we dont have " freedom of speech" enshrined like usa. But by law we are supposed to ha e " freedom of expression "... not anymore i guess
Almost like we're being governed by a bunch of authoritarian, leftist fuckheads that are desperate to control what we are and are not allowed to see and what we are and are not allowed to say and to track absolutely everything we do

Dude, Australia and England are losing their shit over social media and hurtful words. I always said that if I didn’t live in the US, I would consider Australia, but I am not so sure now. It’s becoming authoritarian

Seems rather authorortarian. Gotta be a better way to protect kids . Gaming tech is wicked. YouTube can be educational. Not everything needs to be outright banned

We need less government regulations, not more. Australia is becoming authoritarian, look at what they did for Covid.

That being said, social media, games, and porn are not for kids. Really the parents job to enforce they though.

To be clear, the idea that this will cover social hubs on the Playstation Network, Xblox live or Steam is entirely speculation.
We know it won't be opposed because both major parties said they'd do it, but there's not actually a definitive list yet.
So far they've only confirmed TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, Instagram and X a couple of days ago. They said at the same time that Youtube, WhatsApp and Google Classroom would be exempt, but still potentially subject up to $50M AUD fines for failing to monitor and remove any explicit material. Games themselves have also been excluded.

“A key principle of the approach to applying an age limit of 16 to social media was the recognition that our laws should be set to protect young people, not isolate them,” Ms Rowland said.

“We are not saying that risks don’t exist on messenger apps or online gaming. While users can still be exposed to harmful content by other users, they do not face the same algorithmic curation of content and psychological manipulation to encourage near-endless engagement.”

Can't they just use a VPN and set it to a different country?

they could. but that would kinda suck for online play, especially any kind of competitive online play because being connected to a vpn would add a whole lot of ping time because australia is so far away from most other countries and they might have a hard time finding a vpn server in a country that is even remotely close to them. assuming that they would have to be connected to the vpn while logged onto their consoles or pc game launchers just to be able to play the game.

if all they needed to do was to create an account using a vpn from a different country, but still be able to log in to that account from their regular internet connection and play their games, then all would be well and none of it would be an issue. they would only need to use the vpn to create accounts or buy games or whatever. but if this won't be the case and they have to use a vpn just to be able to play their games, then they're probably gonna encounter some lag issues while playing online.

this is a completely stupid law. australia - where the spiders are so big that they have health bars and everything there will kill you or eat you, and their only fear is the teenagers playing grand theft auto. fuck sakes i know people who were 6 years old that would play call of duty and talk shit over the mic. australia has gone soft.
