So Ontario just increased it's minimum wage to 14 bucks an hour, and will increase it again to 15 bucks an hour by next year.

That's a 30 percent increase to minimum wage in less than 18 months!

And every god damn analyst told our bitch ass government not to do it. The banks projected a possible 60k+ of job loss through the course of the next year. Economy experts explained that such a drastic increase was too much, too soon.

But our fucking dumb ass libtard government proclaimed "it's the right thing to do!"

Well this report just happened.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/business/canada-employment-january-1.4527905

88000 part jobs are now cut. And that's just within the first month! I'm sure theirs more to come.

I hope those 88000 vote conservative in the upcoming election which is really the actual reason why this idiot increase happened. They just went from making 12 dollars an hour to 0 dollars an hour! Because "it was the right thing to do"

Liberals. Fucking up economies like nobodies buisness!

Seattle's having some.... issues with how they raised it. And they haven't even bumped it to a full $15 yet.

People's hours being cut and the more, "menial" jobs are being replaced by automation (touch screen menus for shit like McDonald's as an example).

Would anyone happen to know who makes touch screen cashiers for fast food? I'm looking to invest.

Automation was coming with or without min wage hikes .A business' number one goal is profits .Profits increase when you have robots doing work and not people. There is the initial R&D that goes into it for expenses but after it's polished off you can just cut your employees thus removing those expenses to improve profits. Seems straight forward.

Yikes. I make well above minimum wage but if they keep increasing at that rate I'll be making minimum wage in no time!

The thing that really fucking pisses me off is a two part effect;

- cost of living will...lol...most certainly increase because cost of living is tied indirectly to minimum wage. So that makes all of this shit rather useless.

- everyone (like myself) who busted their ass to acquire skills to get a decent paying job above minimum wage just got a demotion for I will NOT be receiving a fucking 30 percent increase in my salary to compensate for the drastic increase in the cost of living.

This makes me want to rage on our PM.

Stupid fucking butch lesbian. I wanna kick her right in the cunt.

This was your standard fair, libtard headline making bullshit move pulled right before a major election designed to target the biggest chunk of Ontario residents so they can win the next election later this year.

According to the best available data, your government(s) are doing it the right way by raising wages at the municipal level. It's been shown that employment/job loss isn't nearly as affected by municipal increases as people think.

You have to tie wages to living costs, and municipal-level wage variance is the only way to do it. It's state/province and federal increases that get dicey.

Seattle's outcomes have actually been better than forecast, and those "menial" jobs are going to go the way of automation regardless.

I get that but it was only rumored to be coming to Seattle then basically popped up right after the change in minimum wage.

Amazon also opened a grocery store that is like members only and doesn't have cashiers either.

The more concerning thing for me is stuff like this:
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/26/business/economy/seattle-minimum-wage.html

Some highlights:

- The first study, by a team of researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, supports the conclusion of numerous studies before it, that increasing the minimum wage up to a level that is about half or less of an area’s typical wage leads to at most a small reduction in employment.

- The University of Washington researchers found that the minimum-wage increase resulted in higher wages, but also a significant reduction in the working hours of low-wage earners. This was especially true of the more recent minimum-wage increase, from as high as $11 an hour to up to $13 an hour in 2016. In that case, wages rose about 3 percent, but the number of hours worked by those in low-wage jobs dropped about 9 percent — a sizable amount that led to a net loss of earnings on average.

Seattle COL is fucked cause of the tech companies here

You either have like Section 8 housing or shit-tier 250 sq foot apartments that are near $1000 a month with no utilities included.

That makes sense .What will end up happening is we'll have those min wage earners go further thekr education .This will then lead to an even bigger glut of skilled workers and no jobs. All while automation continues to increase.

Part two of our fucking ontario "Utopia" is a basic income system.

That's right! let's all just sit at home and play CoD all fucking day as we all live off of welfare...I mean basic income.

This is good for me as an owner of rentals

Ya it’s too much too fast. Nothing wrong with a quarter here or there but this is insane. We have no good option in Ontario. I want to vote PC but if they put Doug Ford in I don’t think I can do it. I might vote outside of the three main parties, I’ll have to look into the options.

1. “Standard fare”
2. Lay of the Molsons, ehhy?
3. Cost of living isn’t tied to minimum wage. If it was, the cost of living wouldn’t have skyrocketed in the states over the last 30 years. So you didn’t get a wage cut just because someone else got a raise. Relax.
4. “Target the biggest chunk of voters.” Well, it seems that if the biggest chunk of voters want the wage hike, that’s democracy, ehhy?
5. If there are terrible consequences, people will vote the other way in the next election. Once again, relax... or move to the American South where you never ever will have to worry about anyone trying to do anything to benefit low income workers. And I mean NEVER.

If a business knows you are willing to part with 1.25 for a coffee then it stands to reason that they can and will increase their prices based off of what the lowest denominator has in their pockets.

And that's just one indirect way that cost of living goes up. As minimum wage increase cost of everything goes up to compensate for the extra wage increase. (my wife's restaurant had to raise their prices to compensate...and so on and so forth.

You can raise minimum wage but not 30 percent in 18 fucking months!

Pouring a cup of coffee or flipping fucking burgers are jobs never meant to allow you to live on your own or buy a house. Those are shit jobs requiring basic skills one learns by the 4th grade.

Heaven's forbid that you should have to acquire ACTUAL skills to better yourself to get somewhere in life? Maybe that's asking too much? But regardless. Fuck this increase and I hope more part time jobs get axed.

1.Businesses charge the max they can for anything. Look at the cost of a Big Mac In Oz versus Murka..its cheaper in Oz even though the MW in OZ in 2x that in Murka...BUT HOW CAN DIS BE???? ECONOMY NOT KUHLAPS????

2.There will always be people who have to work these jobs, Mcdonalds and Walmart insure that. Even if everyone who works there today got degrees tomorrow they would import a bunch of immigrants to take their place and then you would start another thread saying how they get paid too much, theyre all scum, why dont they get degrees, etc. repeat ad nauseam. These service jerbs are here to stay whether you like it or not. For some reason you wont be happy until these people are all condemned to slavery.

That's right! let's all just sit at home and play CoD all fucking day as we all live off of welfare...I mean basic income.

Whether you like the idea or not, UBI (universal basic income) is becoming increasingly presumed as an inevitability in the developed world. With the onset of automation, traditional human labor is becoming more and more inefficient, and the traditional model of earning solely through single-firm employment is becoming less and less optimal for the national economies of first world nations.

With the rate of automation and the effects of economic stratification, it's almost certain that within a couple decades UBI will become the most efficient method of resource distribution, so that people's basic needs can be paid out through national means and persons can more freely choose to seek other employment without the employer needing to pay minimum wages or saddle healthcare costs for relatively unimportant clerical positions.

It will most likely happen in Europe first, but UBI and liberalization of wage floors is on its way.

If no jobs are available what do you suggest they do? At some point barring a mass death if humans we will run out if jobs .Do you have any solutions outside if a UBI when that happens?
