So I'm 5'9 150 lbs of pure not muscle. When I look in the mirror I see a overall slim guy with a gut. I never feel like getting out of bed in the morning and when I do I feel so sluggish I can barely stand. I'm feeling slow, my reaction time has been lessened and I feel sore even though I don't go to the gym. I just signed up for a local sports club with a swimming pool, cardio room, weight room you know the likes. I really need to know how to get back into everything. I've just gotten my diet in check. I get 1 gram per pound of my bodyweight, my basic diet consist of oatmeal, lot of dairy products (milk, cottage cheese, eggs, etc.), salads, chicken, turkey, steak , tuna, potatoes, peanut butter. I plan on having a protein shake in the morning and one right after a workout. Overall I just want some general helpful tips on what I should really concentrate on when I get back into the gym.

Short answer? Compound lifts. Longer answer: read the stickies and post more specific questions. Basically I think (and many agree with me) that you should start on something resembling a basic powerlifting program for at least a year before learning more advanced methods and lifts. it should include Deadlifts, squats, bench press, overhead press, pullups, and rows as well as some ab work. Check the stickies, read carnal's treatise, check out my website (also in the stickies) and ask about what you don't understand.

Eat right, rest well, and workout well.

Seems so easy, yet so difficult.

Take advantage of the pool. Doing laps is a great way to get in shape.

reading the stickies and getting your diet in check is a good place to start.

Looks like you're on the right track. You just need to take that first step with your training. Start off slow with basic compound lifts and work from there. The endorphin rush you get from exercise will help motivate you. You're energy will skyrocket once you start training!

Good call Parallax. be sure to have the doctor check you blood sugar. You could be diabetic.

iid say dont get too crazy with the dairty products. a lot of them can build up in fat and cholesterol after a while.

drink only 2% milk or less
dont eat more then 3 eggs a day
lay low on the cheese unless it's lowfat cheese

FUCK THAT SHIT! Whole fat milk, wholefat cottage cheese, and as many eggs as you can stomach. It's all good for you. I do all that and I feel fine. But then again, I do supplement my diet with 2 beers a night, so maybe that's the ticket.

I like to finish a long, hard day with a mighty glass of raspberry iced tea .... That, or some cranberry-lime juice. I can't have apple-grape juice, though. I can't ... I won't.

It sounds like you need to get more sleep at night, too. If you are feeling sluggish, it may be because you go to bed way too late for the time you plan on waking up. I do that to a lesser extent, but then again, I'm insane, so I guess that helps, too.

Definatly listen to the guys who say eat and drink the whole milk and whole cheese. None of that reduced crap. Whole milk has been proven to be the best for you. Let me search for the studies and I'll get back to you with it if im not prevented from posting a link with my lovely dubs.
