So Matt Lindland was ranked number 1?

lindland was one of the top middleweights for quite a few years. not good enough to get the UFC strap, but good enough to stay a contender for several years. kind of like okami. i would of liked to see lindland face anderson back in the day. would of been interesting.

This is true. But back when the middleweight division was weak sauce .

also, is it true that he didnt wash two weeks before a fight in order to incorporate some biological ward
fare in his arsenal?

I don't know if this is true but I kind of want it to be

In Lindland's prime, he was a top level fighter. He has high level wrestling, silver in greco in the Olympics, also was a top level freestyle and folkstyle wrestler, plus good hands. He has quality wins on his resume- Horn, Newton, Miletich, Vitale, Doerksen, ect.

He suffered the same fate as tons of other top level fighters, they get old. They take too many punches to the face in training. They train harder instead of smarter. If he would have retired at 21-5 in 2008 (at age 38) people would look at his career much differently.

I loved watching Jacare hit all kinds of crazy transitions on him when they fought. Shit was beautiful.

I think he was ready to become champ in 2003 like Yves Edwards deserved the LW belt in 2004, but in those years UFC decided to not put the MW and LW belts in the game.

I think the blatant disrespect for Lindland in this thread is kind of disgusting.

Lindland went from being a boring grinder to kind of a hybrid wrestler/sub specialist who began dominating on the global level after his his UFC run... until age finally took its toll.

But all the top middleweights had weird losses back then.

hello ligthandshadow,

the vibe i'm getting from the posts here is that Matt Lindland was "ok" but not really that big of a deal, though a few posters have admitted he was the best in his time.

i'd put him on a level with Liddell, in terms of his place in the sport.

Fedor, an amazing fighter but the dude couldn't grab a rope to save his life.

The worst rope grab ever, Fedor didn't even hold on to it. Based in this evidence Borck Laser clearly would have beat him if they fought.

I think he might have been. Even Phil Baroni was considered #4 at one point.

probably at the time of the Lindland rematch. He was 5-1 and coming off impressive wins over Suloev and Menne, both of whom held major MW titles around that time. It is mostly a testament to a weak division but Baroni at 4 isnt the craziest thjing ive heard. Somebody should remind him of this, he seems easily saddened nowadays.

The funny thing is years from now, there will be a "So Chris Weidman was ranked #1?" thread. You can bank on that!!

MW wasn't actually THAT weak in the mid/late 00's, it was more disorganised.

Get everyone together in the mid 00's and you have Anderson, Franklin, Hendo, Lindland, Filho, Busta, etc do it in the late 90's and you have Anderson, Franklin, Hendo, Mousasi, Jacare, Vitor etc.

Its really only post SF buyout that we've seen a MW division with most of the best talent in it fighting each other often.

Naah, as much as it pains me to admit it he did kick Anderson's ass twice. Weidman will be remembered for sure, even after Machida shinobi-kicks him through the cage fence

Well, back in 2008, I remember people saying this exact thing about Lindland although the victory over Silva does add more credibility (in a Hallman way of course).

Nooooo dont put him on a level with Chuck. Chuck was no doubt THE MAN at one point. Even if it was close between him, Wand, Rampage, Hendo etc as far as actual fighting skills, Chuck took this thing up at least 1 level. People loved watching Chuck fight, Lindland, not so much. Although I think Lindland is underrated and not as boring as people say. He fought like a greco based Ben Askren. He has good wins over Pat Miletich, Ivan Salaverry, Travis Lutter, Nino Schembri, Joe Doerkson, Baronix2, Mike Van Arsdale, Jeremy Horn, Carlos Newton. Many of those wins were finishes as well.

1: weidman beat silva
2: undefeated
3: people like watching him fight
4: people like weidman (as a person)

All of those criteria can be applied to Lindland as well. If you were an MMA fan back then, you should know this.

That fedor "rope grabbing" will go down in infamy.

He was ranked #2 in the world before the fedor fight, cut him on the first thunderous punch he landed and was 30 seconds away from legit beating fedor.

But he sucked and was shit... Lmao
