So can Soccer Players make for good MMA fighters?

Training in another sport gives you athleticism which will help any other sport. But anyone that says a soccer player, basketball player, or football player will make a better fighter than a trained fighter is an idiot.

Not until soccer kicks to the head of a downed opponent are finally legalized

Gotta say though, as an American, American Football is overrated AF for fighting and MMA. Dudes getting gassed a minute in. Greg Hardy should just stick to domestic abuse at this rate.....

Hope that joke wasn't too dark

I'd love to see Ibra give it a go.

One of my favourite goals of all time.

Being athletically inclined in general is a pretty crucial aspect of being a fighter and all athletic endeavors have some amount of overlap or application. It really ends there, Jose Aldo didn't kick hard because of Soccer...the dude was a densely packed body if sinew and fast twitch muscle fibers.

All in all, guys are starting younger. If you look at fighters such as Cezary Oleksiejczuk he has a 14-4 amateur record and at like 22 is 10-2 pro, these Dagestanis are wrestling from 5 years old and cross over to Sambo, Judo, Sanda, Muay Thai etc as pre teens and begin their MMA careers as teenagers. Soccer isn't a good base for MMA, being freakishly athletic is and obviously having backgrounds in other martial arts and combatants is.
Pretty much this. It’s worth adding that soccer is a very cardio intensive sport, plus it’s one of the few sports that people of all different heights can do well in.

Latinos and Europeans all play soccer ass kids and teens.

Youll have outliers they can but overall nope. Most soccer players are pussies, weak mentally and made of glass too. Theyd struggle to get through a training camp. There's a reason the biggest and arguably greatest soccer player of all time Cristiano watches and idolizes MMA fighters, boxers even kickboxers.

Is there such thing as domestic abuse-level cardio? He has enough cardio to give his girlfriend/stripper a few punches then he needs the puffer etc...

Just came across this article to find that a lot of Brazilian UFC Fighters played World Football (Soccer as Americans call it) before joining the UFC. However, surprised to see that dudes like Kenny Florian and Conor McGregor played soccer as well.

I wonder if the balance, cardio, and footwork of soccer can transition over well into the Octagon compared to a lot of other sports out there, even the ones that get more physical. Your thoughts?

Oh and article in question

I think it more they are from countries where everyone plays football for fun. Playing it for recreation is very different to playing pro.

Based on the fact that it is not a game where
  • Men wear helmets and shoulder pads
  • Can be 300+ lb slobs but still be considered "athletes"
  • Sit mostly on the bench because "it's time for the offense to go out and you play defense"
  • 10% of the game is the actual game with 90% playing commercial break
  • The prestige of the game comes from the fact that it is "American" and appeals to hicks in flyover states that think "Murika is the best" while half of their town is suffering from fetanyl overdoses

But yeah, i've never understood why anyone tries to compare Football and American Football outside of the fact they share a name. Rugby is far more comparable, regardless imagine telling someone like Duncan Ferguson he's a mentally weak pussy.

"In 2001, two burglars broke into Ferguson's home in Rufford, Lancashire. Ferguson confronted them and was able to detain one of them, who subsequently spent three days in hospital. The second man managed to flee but was eventually caught."
Seems to have done a more efficient job than Anthony Smith.
